Author

M. R. Tevebaugh

M. R. Tevebaugh is an emerging author in the sci-fi and fantasy genre. It has been theorized by many scholars that his practice of drinking lemon juice straight from the bottle is the cause of his sour disposition in public. He also has an affinity for making up stories, biographies notwithstanding. The bit about lemon juice is entirely factual, however, and some might agree regarding the sour disposition. As of this writing, he lives in Bozeman, Montana with his wife and two boys. You can find more of his work on his website at mrtevebaugh.com.

Money Roolz for Noobz - M. R. Tevebaugh

MENTALITY ROOL #1 - YOU HAVE THE SKILLS

Finances might feel like a nebulous force of evil that's out to get you. And maybe managing money really is some legendary game boss that will remain unconquered for eternity. But if you get nothing else out of this book, please get this: You have everything you need to start the game.

Maybe you will get a little insight from the rest of the book about how to navigate your personal finances. But our main objective is to convince you that you that if you are a gamer, you already have the mindset and skills to manage your money. So let's crush this money game.

    IRL Meta Build

Unfortunately, there are a lot of forces out there that have a vested interest in making you think that you can’t manage your own money. The takeaway here is that gaming teaches us a ton of things. It teaches us time management, resource gathering and allocation, prioritization, competition, the capacity to lose and start over, and the mentality to just grind shit out. Don’t have enough iron, then go mine some. Upgraded mount too expensive? Well then you can’t buy it yet.

You’ve got delayed gratification, you’ve got problem-solving skills, and you’ve got risk assessment. You understand in-game purchasing and cost-to-value ratios. You learn from your mistakes and you don’t quit until you win the game.

You may not have thought of all that as finance, but it is. You have the skills. Let’s work out how to apply them.

    What Some Noobz Do

Honestly, this one comes a bit naturally to me (Matt) in terms of finance. I have a bit of an inherent belief that when I set out to learn something, I'll be able to. So when it comes to financial stuff, I hold a belief that I have everything I need to get started. The psychology nerds call this "growth mindset, and yes, I'm a little bit of a psychology nerd. Point is, I only have it about cognitive things. That confidence evaporates when I try to learn physical things. I went to a free-running parkour class and felt really embarrassed because I didn't learn as fast as the other people there. But I had a buddy with me that talked me through it and convinced me to keep going.

That's what we hope to be for you. We'll be your party leaders in this game, but through the whole thing we hope you hear us whispering creepily in your ear, You got this.

    Consider Your Game

How will you best remember your takeaways from this book? Highlighting? Note-taking? Tattooing?

Of the in-game skills mentioned in the IRL section above, which gaming skills have you mastered?

What might happen in the next decade if you don’t make any changes to your money situation?

MENTALITY ROOL #2 – THERE'S NO LEVEL CAP

This one is important. Whenever we think we have finally mastered this game, we are very likely to get taken down. We need to be cautious and humble, always seeking to learn more. Together we will study every boss, its moves and attacks, and then strike as a team.

    IRL Meta Build

The world is always changing. Once upon a time it was important to balance a check book. Now, with online banking, there’s no reason for that skill. But that means we are never done. We are never fully masters. So it’s important to keep learning from now until we are done with the game. Even our favorite games may lose their appeal if we don't keep trying to improve.

We need the mentality of learning and growth to improve in life and in our finances. But you know that already because you’re reading Roolz for Noobz. Congratulations!

    What Some Noobz Do

I (Matt) love learning about this kind of stuff. But even though I am writing this book, and it may sound like we have it all figured out, we really don't. Honestly, I learned a ton from writing this book. I really need to apply more of it and refresh some of my basic skills. So, while the tone of the book may sound like we know everything needed to win, we are still Noobz, too. The Roolz apply to us like everyone else. And when we break them, we experience the consequences.

Nothing like getting pwned for being too cocky. I (Elle) am not an exceptional gamer myself, but I do become overconfident in a few games. Finances, too. We had saved up so much money for so long that we got sloppy with the Roolz. Noob mistake. We’re always learning. So, Consider Your Game.

    Consider Your Game

What questions do you already have about leveling up your financial game?

How do you learn best? Audio? Visual? Teaching?

How can you clearly keep in mind Mentality Roolz 1 & 2: you have the skills, but don't forget your noobhood?

MENTALITY ROOL #3 – KNOW YOUR WHY

It's important to think about the end-game before we even begin. Why would we want to play this game in the first
