It doesn't matter how you start, it matters how you finish. This can be said of Harriet Cammock's life. Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Harriet's journey is one marked by a strong faith in the belief that you can overcome, if you try hard enough.Through childhood, her grandmother instilled in her a drive to succeed. After an abusive marriage, Harriet determined she would use her own experiences in overcoming abuse to teach other women that there is help available. She channeled those experiences in writing and through her blog, The Grace Chronicles, she provides inspirational and uplifitng messages to many people.Harriet began The Faith Hour in 2009 and used this platform to launch The Renewed By Grace Conference which was designed to bring together men and women whose lives were touched by abuse. "I want to show women that you don't have to look like what you went through," Harriet said. Using creative resources and with involvement from other community organizations, Harriet plans to host another conference sometime in the next several months.A published author, she now hosts The Harriet Cammock Show. The Harriet Cammock Show uses principles of surviving and overcoming; principles that Harriet learned first-hand. Harriet has appeared on The Word Network and Atlanta Live! and is a guest writer for The Hinterland Gazette. A gifted speaker, Harriet is available for speaking engagements.

    I Shall Not Want

    Psalms 23

My first experience in writing took place one Friday morning in the summer of 1998. At the time I lived in Central Florida and had partnered in a small business with a friend. That friend proved unfaithful, and having just invested some of my savings, I felt a little overwhelmed at my financial outlook. Not knowing what to do, I sat down and began to pray.

At that time, I became aware that I should be reading Psalms 23. As I turned to the scripture, instead of reading the printed words verbatim, I found myself paraphrasing them. I continued to read and found other verses with similar content. I had a wonderful experience in discovering encouragement, peace, and comfort at a desperately needed time. It was a bad place for me emotionally because I was trying to improve my financial outlook.

At the time, I was being verbally, emotionally, and physically abused by my (then) husband and was desperate for a way out. Starting this business represented a tool of financial empowerment designed to bring me out of the chains of an abusive marriage. As you read this, allow your mind to dwell on similar situations in your own life and write about how you feel here.

    Speak Up

    Acts 18:9

As I look back over the events that shaped my life at the time, I am becoming aware of the tension that surrounded my life and the restraints imposed by my circumstances. If I learned anything from those circumstances, I learned that it is important to speak up.

Sometimes I find myself wondering, had I spoken up, how would those events have turned out? Who would have stood with me? Where would my help come from?

As it turned out, I benefited from the therapeutic sessions in my counselor’s office. They motivated me to speak up. I dared to speak up to an abusive man who held my life hostage with his violence. I dared to speak up so that I would enjoy the abundant life I was entitled to enjoy. I dared to speak up so that my daughter would never have to worry about mommy being killed by daddy.

You should speak up about whatever situations you might find yourself in that don’t fit the design of your life. The verse identified above admonishes us not to be afraid, not to be silent, but speak instead to speak up.

Today, I speak out on social issues such as ending violence against women and children. I speak up so that abuse will end. I am no longer afraid; I will not keep silent. I will speak.

Identify areas in your life in which you have been afraid to speak. Write your thoughts until you feel strong enough to voice your words.
