Body of Artifacts - Abby McCormick

    CHAPTER ONE

    A Tempting Offer

Y OU WANT ME to help you find the red genie’s lamp? Alex asked the leader of the Order of Assassins. He glanced over at Zoranth on the ground in chains before Cornelius, the purple flames shedding light on his glare.

Yes, son, said Cornelius easily. I want the relic he promised me. It only makes sense to claim his bottle and demand it. You and I both want the same thing, after all, as much as you want to deny it.

    And what’s that?

    Power.

Alex sighed inwardly. Was he no better than his father? Did his goals involve anything greater than the thirst for control?

Freedom. Freedom for Layla. Freedom for all genies. The dream of the red genie.

    It was his dream too.

Come, now, Alex. Let’s discuss this like civilized men, the cult leader continued smiling. What would it take for this compromise?

He asked the question as though it did not entail the enslavement of a person. A bargain. A sale.

Why? Alex asked skeptically. Why do you need me to help you?

    Cornelius laughed.

Besides the father-son bonding time? Well, I suspect all those years of boarding school and that Harvard degree I paid for would help in part in the discovery.

Alex didn’t argue that he only had an undergraduate degree in history and an incomplete Harvard Law degree. His father knew that. And as a history professor at the Ivy League himself, Cornelius had much more knowledge of artifacts than Alex could ever attain. Not to mention that the man already had experience unearthing one genie’s bottle: Layla’s.

He must have an ulterior motive.

It’s that or you can wait until I or someone else finds Layla’s bottle again. I still have two more wishes to claim from her. Cornelius said, crossing his arms, his smile fading.

Alex felt his blood boil. Layla owed that man nothing. Alex wouldn’t let anything else be stripped of her. She was no one’s slave.

And you can say goodbye to Claudia. I’m sure someone would find her at least modestly useful as an oracle, even if she is a little unclear in the details.

Alex seized the opportunity while it lasted. He had no other hope of getting Zoranth free from the Assassin’s mountain fortress. He ignored the red genie’s scowl as he responded.

    He comes with us.

    And why is that?

He’s going to have information we can use to find his lamp.

    He won’t willingly give it.

That’s right, I won’t, spat Zoranth from the floor.

    Alex ignored him.

He won’t mean to. But I’m sure we’ll get clues from his demeanor as we get closer.

I knew you were sly, Alex, his father said proudly.

    There’s something else.

    And what’s that?

    I get the first wishes.

What would you wish for that you don’t have already?

    Layla’s freedom, Alex responded.

DO YOU THINK THAT YOU’LL ever find it? Zoranth asked Cornelius. Before you die, I mean. The last person to hold my vessel expired shortly after obtaining it. It was a brutal death. I’ll spare you the details.

Cornelius ignored him. Alex felt chills roll down his spine. Layla was opposed to him helping Zoranth at first. He never asked why. He assumed it was because she was an unwilling bride. Perhaps there was more to it.

They sat around a campfire in the middle of the desert, the yellow glow reflecting off their faces. The crickets chirped loudly, overshadowed only by the animalistic gnawing of Zoranth’s Bengal on a dead gazelle.

Shouldn’t he be in cuffs? Nathaniel asked, sitting as far away from Zoranth as possible.

The sweaty blonde looked completely out of his element in the vast desert. His skin bore witness to the oppressive heat. His weighty black cloak had been abandoned, leaving him clad in a black shirt with sleeves meticulously rolled up, and black trousers now tarnished by the embrace of sand and soil.

Alex would have taken pleasure in the obvious discomfort of Nathaniel but instead he tried to completely ignore that he was there.

Cornelius insisted on having backup in case Alex changed his mind and
