Tackling the Truth - Abby McCormick
CHAPTER one
The Knight’s Arrival
THE CRISP AUTUMN AIR enveloped Alethea as she shivered in her lightweight pink varsity jacket. She didn’t even wear school colors, surprised the fanatical fans even let her in. Hey, at least it is the right silhouette for a football game. She shivered, pulling down on her denim skirt to defend her mostly bare legs from the freezing metal bleachers. Why had she decided this was better than staying home under the covers to read Queen Charlotte?
Alethea side eyed Scarlett who was clutching her tablet to her chest. She was intermittently taking notes on the game for her article soon to be in The Daily Beacon. Scarlett, unlike Alethea, was warmly dressed. She wore jeans and an orange hoodie with a T on it like a normal college student. To be fair, she had tried to convince Alethea to do the same, but did she listen? No. She wanted to dress cute.
Alethea’s tight, natural curls were pulled into fluffy pigtails with pink satin bows to match her jacket. She wore pink shiny lip gloss and plenty of mascara. The only thing she could say for herself was that she had thought to wear her white converse. At least her feet weren’t freezing.
The crowd erupted into a symphony of cheers and applause. Alethea’s attention snapped to the field, and she witnessed as Ethan Rivera, affectionately called Riverrun, caught the football, cradling it as he swept past multiple players across the field.
The other team threw themselves at him, but he dodged them until he was free and clear in the end zone, sealing the play with a triumphant touchdown.
The exclamations from the University of Tennessee fans deafened her.
Alethea released her grip on her skirt for a moment in admiration. She normally had little interest in football, but even she knew Ethan Rivera’s name. He was famous at school and in town. He was already a second-round draft pick for the NFL for next year with a multi-million-dollar contract.
What team is he going to be playing for again?
Alethea asked her friend and fellow journalist.
Now Alethea understood what the fuss was about when it came to Ethan Rivera and she was amazed to see it with her own eyes.
I thought you weren’t interested in football,
Scarlett teased. I thought you came so you didn’t have to be in the dorm alone on a Friday night.
Scarlett was right, of course,
Scarlett was on assignment, writing an article about Ethan, the standout football player who had been making waves with his impressive skills on the field. Alethea was just along for the ride.
Working for the school newspaper, The Daily Beacon, had its perks. All they had to do was flash their newspaper badges to get into the game. They even got great seats.
Alethea had to admit, this was way more fun than last weekend, in which finishing her paper on Constitutional Law was the highlight.
Yeh,
Scarlett yelled over the roaring crowd. I’m drooling over him too. Maybe we can get a quote after the game!
Alethea intently joined in the rest of the game with fellow fans. She cheered alongside Scarlett as Ethan led their team to victory. He was untouchable.
Following the intense match, the final whistle blew, and the stadium erupted into applause. Their team won, no shocker. Alethea couldn't contain her excitement as she joined Scarlett in discussing the noteworthy plays and Ethan's stellar performance.
The night having set in, the two girls gathered their purses and made their way to the still-bright field to get a quote from the star player.
Alethea couldn’t take her eyes off him as they drew closer. He was covered in glistening sweat that she could see from three yards away. He had short
