    Chapter One

Andrea Gill adjusted her swim cap over the top of her ears and fitted her goggles over her eyes. The sounds from the German arena disappeared as her gaze narrowed to the glistening water in front of her. The blue appeared as soft as a baby blanket. She longed to bask in the pool. Still. Peaceful. Bliss.

As one of the older women on the US Swim Team, Andi dismissed the silly antics of her teammates—from karaoke-fests in the Olympic venue to the parties with their male counterparts. She didn’t have time for foolishness. Her focus remained on her goal of Olympic gold. She’d been that way in school, too. At least the incident in high school hadn’t derailed her dreams.

At the first buzzer, Andi bent over and tapped the platform. She took a deep breath and, with the second buzzer, she pushed off, floating in air for a moment until she slid into the cool liquid. Her hands cupped the water, releasing it, and letting it flow around her as she moved effortlessly through the pool. Flutter kicking, her powerful leg muscles propelled her along. As she approached the wall, she heard the voice in her head remind her to flip, twist, and push off. Flip, twist, and push became her mantra as she sailed through the first turn in the 400-meter freestyle.

During the race, she focused on the pool, her movements, and doing her best. She didn’t worry about where she was in relation to the other swimmers, tuning out the screams and cheers from the spectators. It soothed her. Recalling the gypsy fortune teller’s words at the school fair when she was ten, she could almost smell the incense and hear the jingle of her bracelets. Chile, the water be your element...it will always keep and protect you, bathe your wounds.

The swimming had always been her passion, she’d become a part of the Olympic team this year on a fluke when one of the other girls, Sarah, suffered an injury swimming off the coast of Florida. The blacktip shark nipped and swam off, taking a chunk out of the girl’s leg and ruining her dreams of Olympic glory. All the national coverage over her entrance to the team, as well as her age, made her uncomfortable. Remaining in the background was more her style. It was safer to not call attention to herself.

As she reached the middle of the pool on her final lap, Andi poured it on. She pushed her body, forcing her legs to kick harder and her arms to reach father, moving her faster through the water. The blue tile on the pool wall under the platform came into view. Stretching out her arm, she touched it, signaling the end of her final race of the 2016 German Summer Olympics.
