    The gatekeeper

The moon floated above the forest, trying to grant the world her illumination anyway, fighting to break free of the clouds that barricaded her in the midnight sky. Teal cinnamon trees so densely populated the forest below the cloudy sky, that nothing could be seen except for trees and fallen turquoise-grey leaves. Suddenly, a powerful wind blew away the leaves, revealing the earthy brown sod, and off in the distance, a lake. Clouded moonlight tried to reflect off the stilled surface of the water’s body, for it a lake half a mile around each way. Standing there in the precise center of this lake was an island made of stone. Five standing stones, one for fire, one for air, one for water, one for wood and flower, and one for metal and stone, grew out of this stone island and held themselves erect, tall and strong. A teenage girl with exotic white skin, wild, flowing crimson hair, green eyes, a lavender scarf around her neck and front, and a deep pine-green robe with viridian spirals and stars over it, stood there, waving a censer full of incense in her left hand. She wore a pair of sandals, and held a long, gnarled staff in her right hand. Down at her feet was a long, polished but somewhat damaged, candlestick, perilously close to the water, for she stood at the very edge of the island. On the opposite side of the island, a young man, with a thick, reddish beard and moderately wild crimson hair sat there, reading intensely from a purple book that he held in his hands. Wearing a strong robe he had dyed a beautiful shade of amethyst purple, a plum-colored coat, and tough leather boots, he ran his finger along the book, searching for a certain piece of text.

Javexus, announced the teenage girl as she waved the censer over the water. She had a strong London accent. Mysterious white smoke escaped from it, dispersing into the air. I ’ave come ’ere as you asked of me. Come to me now. Backing away from the edge of the island, she walked across the stone floor of the island, and the girl very nearly stepped onto the border of a large circle created by spreading silver salt on the floor. Luckily, she was aware of the circle, for she had created it. With a quick sweep of her knee, she avoided ruining the barrier. Cautiously, she walked around the circle, waiting. Saying nothing, she sat beside the boy who was studiously reading. Sitting at the edge once more, they were waiting for the moment they had been called to this island for, with unbearable anticipation.

Kylie, the boy replied, nodding to the girl but then returning to his book I cannot find the spell Javexus wants us to recite. His accent was as thick as hers was. These two teens were unquestionably British.

Put the book away, Kelly, Kylie removed the book from Kelly’s hands, then gently touched his hands and stayed with him. He looked back up at her, but they visually avoided each other’s faces. The moon watches up in the sky in all her majesty, drawn by the gathering of such an ’eavy wave of paranormal energy to this one lonely island.

That is the spell, Kelly acknowledged. But tell me. Unable to bear looking at her anymore, he looked up at the moon, twisting his neck a little, so that he could look into the girl’s green eyes. Tell me, sister, am I doing the right thing? I would rather quite prefer to stay out of such things. Even when Javexus led me away from you to initiate me as a druid, without you there, I ’ad to refuse ’im.

True, brother, Kylie replied kindly, But you are a sorcerer. She quickly took her elder brother’s hands into her own. You know the ancient arts as well as I do. It is simply that we tend to cast different spells.

That doesn’t answer the question, dear sister, sighed Kelly. Magic is not the answer to all of ones problems.

Whoever said it was, luv? But with Javexus having already made all the preparations, do you dare oppose his will a second time?

If ’e ’ad allowed you to remain by me side, in your rightful place, I might even now be a druid as you are. Alone, forced to see meself, I ’ad to stand up for what I believe.

And yet you are by my side, Kylie stated. No matter. With Sheridan dead, there is no danger. You cannot be initiated unless you truly desire it beyond anything else, and if you are found worthy. If there is a question in your soul, in your heart, you must sort that out first. Be of good cheer, though, dear Kelly, Kylie stood up. Turning her back on her brother, she then removed her scarf and placed it upon him, which made him smile at her.

    Thank you, Kelly told her.

The Goddess loves and forgives all ’er children, Kylie replied. She shall come to you when you are ready for ’er, and until then, travel the path that gives you the most peace. After that, Kylie put the censer down.

Quite right, answered Kelly, standing up quite suddenly. He looked around him, sensing a presence. Closing his eyes on an instinct, Kelly concentrated on this presence, and then he relaxed. Best to be ready, sister. Javexus is ’ere.

Indeed I am, stated a short man, in his forties, wearing olive green robes, leather armor, and leather boots. His hair was also wild and free, and he reeked of wild flowers, which is good, for his clothes were unwashed. Pardon me for my lateness. Hurcnama was trying to enchant one of the villages in Flourae, but I drove her out.

    Of the village, Kylie asked.

    Of the country, Javexus replied.

See, sister, Kelly commented, Getting back to nature ’as regressed ’im quite a bit. Why, he doesn’t even ’ave a daily washing!

And you, Kelly, Javexus snapped, Are here only because three are required for the spell. Walking around the circle, he closed his eyes and focused upon the circle. Do you have the herbs I require?

Right here, Kylie answered, grabbing a bowl of herbs off the stone island’s floor. And the censer ’as been waved. Wind was called for, and all that is left is for the clouds to be sent away so the moon can shine in all ’er glory.

What do I do, Kelly asked? This is a spell I do not know.

Indeed, Javexus stated. The spell of the moonturning is a work rarely used, and known by even fewer. Kylie followed the circle, throwing herbs into it until there is nothing left. While Kylie threw herbs into the circle of salt, Javexus stepped into the circle and stopped walking. Kelly, recite the ritual.

Oh, right, Kelly stammered, quite caught off his guard. The moon watches up in the sky in all her… he started to wave his hands around, causing Javexus to look at him with displeasure.

Her majesty, Kylie corrected, Drawn by the gathering of such an ’eavy wave of paranormal energy to this one lonely island.

Thank you, Javexus bowed to Kylie, though he was still upset with Kelly. The moon turning ritual calls upon the moon’s aid. Tried though I have, no matter what I plea, Emperor Kennibus will not listen.

    Listen about what, Kylie asked?

He has decided to eradicate the forest on Galadae hill, Javexus replied. Nothing I said could sway the Emperor of Rex Terra.

    How terrible, Kylie declared!

So the Emperor wants to clear off ’is own forest, Kelly said. What is so terrible about that?

Eliminating that forest is suicidal, Javexus explained, tensely. Worse, it’s genocidal. I cannot believe Emperor Kennibus could be that stupid.

Well, I rather must protest, insisted Kelly. After all, I used to work in a lumber mill, and I can quite assure you that clearing off a forest without replanting it is not wise, but it certainly does not qualify as genocide. Could you not move those animals elsewhere?

It’s not the forest that’s going to die, Javexus warned, It’s the citizens. Those trees are the only thing that prevents the ocean from rushing right in to the valley below and drowning everyone there. He wouldn’t even listen to my suggestion that he cut down some trees from the Scarlet Hillside.

    Scarlet Hillside, Kelly asked?

The hills that divide the territory of Galadae from Rex Terra proper, Javexus answered. You’ll know it because his summer fortress is between Galadae City and the Scarlet Hillside.

When was the last census record? Exactly ’ow ’igh is the population there, Kylie asked?

    Over fifty thousand, Javexus huffed.

By Jove, Kelly gasped, as Kylie covered her mouth. The two Brits looked at each other, in stunned disbelief.

Grave and critical, Kylie realized, sitting down from the shock. Her hands nervously fluttered, so she leaned over and picked up her candlestick, which she held onto for dear life. Why don’t we simply go over there and prevent the deforestation?

And have Kennibus send his knights out there to arrest or slay us, Javexus growled? Be sensible, druidess.

Forgive me, Kylie nodded. Perhaps the Knights of Callistore could protect the woodlands in our stead.

You’re not yet familiar with the politics of this world, sister, Kelly stated. The Knights of Callistore protect Callistore and Thaydon. What standing do they ’ave to abandon their place to protect Rex Terra? As the largest, and most powerful and populated country in this world, wouldn’t Rex Terra consider than an invasion?

He’s right, Javexus agreed, To send the Knights in would effectively shield the forest temporarily, but it would also start a war. No, we are druids. This is our fight.

I begin to understand, Kylie stood up, and looked up at the moon, Why you beseech La Luna’s aid. Yet, this spell we’re casting begets so much power.

Too much, Javexus stated. I will have to sleep for a month after I work the spell. But it will also turn the power of the moon, for it is the ultimate spell of reversal. It can break any curse, any madness, and any enchantment.

Enchantment, Kelly realized, snapping his fingers. Hurcnama!

That’s what we’re going to find out, Kylie stated. By burning the herbs.

Ah, good, Javexus said, You are a true sorceress. Let the herbs be ablazed!

Kelly, luv, Kylie said, Please disperse the clouds. Only when free can the moon assist us.

If you insist, Kelly whipped an athame out of a pocket hidden in his robe. Clouds be banished now, I say! Moonlight shines in all her rays! Phantasmal mists gone, moon is as bright as day! Here my command, clouds, and go away!

    Select an element, Javexus instructed.

Wind and air, I select thee, Kelly cried out. Elakaktum paledres zepicuram lenkghtord! Once more, the wind arose, starting from the water and rapidly ascending. It threw water out of the lake and on to the stone island, getting all three people wet and pushing the censer down into the lake. Higher and further, the wind arose, floating up and further without hesitation. Finally, the wind connected with the clouds. Without any warning, the winds forcibly withdrew the clouds, banishing them from the midnight sky, and spreading the clouds off until they were over the forest, which effectively pushed them away from the lake.

Very good, Javexus said, his anger with Kelly neutralized. As is your sister, you too are gifted. Therefore, I suppose you do deserve an explanation. When I discerned the enchantment upon Kennibus, I attempted to do away with it. If it were only Hurcnama’s sorcery, my breaking chant would have cleared his mind with ease. The hold over his mind is stronger. On my own, I cannot break it. I must have nature’s power.

Isn’t this a violation of the man’s free will, Kelly asked?

No, Kylie explained, We’re out to restore ’is free will. But let us see who our enemy is. Through the herbs and through the flames, show us all the villain’s face. Fire, Kylie held out her hands, using her candlestick instead of a wand. Waving her candlestick around, she finally tapped the stone floor of the island with the heavy weapon. When she did, all of the herbs within the circle caught instantly aflame in a forest green burst.

Fhew, the wind moaned as it resumed its powerful gusts. Through the combination of wind and fire, the flames exploded, creating a deadly blast. Javexus grabbed Kelly and pulled him down, while Kylie ducked on her own initiative. Wisely, she took the bowl that once had herbs in it, but now had water, and threw it on the fire. Upon the contact between water and fire, in that brief instant, Kylie saw a face within. A beautiful African-American girl in a loose grey shirt with half of her breasts exposed. She had long flowing hair, a crimson skirt reinforcing her thin scarlet pants, and fashionable boots. Her eyes were violet, and she held a magic wand. Then it was over. The vision faded as the fire died, negated by the water Kylie aggressively threw at it.

    Who was that, Kylie asked?

I do not know, Javexus said. I’ve never met her.

Quickly, Kylie waved her hand to Javexus spastically, Complete the spell before the time is lost. Javexus immediately stood at Kylie’s left hand, while Kelly stood next to her right hand. Each of them locked hands over the circle. Realizing that she was in the center, Kylie knew now she had to be the one to work the rite. Sister Moon, we call upon thee. We freed you from the clouds and cleared your skies for you. Do now the rite we ask of you. Clear the mind of Kennibus, Emperor of Rex Terra. Break whatever infects and pollutes his mind. Grant ’im clarity and rational thinking, so that he shaln’t threaten ’is forests any longer. Remove the grip upon ’is mind. Holding their hands above the circle, Kylie, Kelly, and Javexus then looked up at the moon. At that moment, the moon made one entire rotation in the space of thirty seconds. Going from full moon to full moon with every step in between, the moon flashed a beam of blinding, brilliant light. The force of this light was so intense that Kylie, Javexus, and Kelly were all quite knocked down to the stone floor. Kylie was exhausted, and could not stand up, and neither could Javexus. But Kelly was able to stand.

Argh, growled a terrible being. Everyone dared to look, and saw for a moment the image of a grey dragon, grand and powerful, with an old, decrepit woman standing behind him.

By Jove, Kelly gasped. For a moment, he thought he saw the dragon from the book of Revelations, for this dragon looked almost exactly like it.

Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Kylie screamed, terrified. She placed her hand upon her forehead and forced herself to calm down. What was that with Hurcnama?

Lord Error, Javexus gasped. Dragon magic. This was a more serious problem than I thought if Error was involved. Especially in Morteleecia’s dominion.

    Morteleecia, Kelly asked?

She is the Death dragon, Javexus declared. And she despises Lord Error. Why would she allow him in her fraction of the world? You two must leave, now! If he was the one who cast the charm upon Emperor Kennibus, he will be furious with us all.

Naturally, Kylie realized. If ’is magic was just overturned by our moonturning spell. Will he assault anyone else?

It is we three whom he’s got enmity with, Kelly answered. Come, Kylie. There’s no choice.

How much time do we ’ave, Kylie wondered?

A matter of hours, Javexus warned, Perhaps a quarter of a day. Take your sister and run away to your world. I’m too weak to open a gate for more than just myself.

    God, forgive me, Kelly sighed.

Don’t worry, Javexus breathed, She will. Kelly crossed his arms, quite unamused by the comment. Even so, Kelly then waved his hands. He spread his hands out before him like an eagle.

To survive, Lord, Kelly prayed, There simply is no choice. Pelux, vedrikal, lethuma kedrosh zeppion! Open up the portal and let us pass, without the need for Javexus. A tiny shower of violet sparks emerged, which spun around in the air. Quickly, spinning faster and faster and ever faster still, around everyone, while all eyes merely watched, at last, the sparks united together into a single unit. Once they were united, the energy mass expanded and grew, until it was large enough to be a purple portal. Fiddlesticks, Kelly complained, I created a portal to Shandigore.

Who bloody cares, Kylie asked, We should get out of ’ere.

Care for a lift, Kelly cheerfully inquired as he picked up his sister. She smiled back at him.

Shall you join us, milord, Kylie turned to Javexus? Error will be after you, as well.

Very possible, Javexus replied, But I’ve got a refuge of my own to utilize. Travel safe.

Be careful, Sir, Kelly bowed. Then with Kylie secure in his grip, Kelly happily walked into the portal. Magically, it closed behind him as he crossed it, vanishing from sight. Javexus turned away from them, and dove into the ocean. Under the water, a glorious flash of pastel yellow light burned through the water, then faded away, taking Javexus with it.

The rose garden was surprisingly small, but it was still breathtakingly rueful, considering it was shaped like a maze. The bright green grass and the deep red flowers were pallid and full of decay. There was a gazebo, painted in gold, which was used as the entrance to the maze. At the end of the maze was an elegant fountain, with two angels pouring water from their vases. Immediately behind the fountain was the way out. As the perfume of the roses’ gracious fragrance once filled the air, all that remained these days was a wistful memory. In the distance, there was the sound of the bus off in the distance from the street. Nobody came here anymore. Buried deep within the center of the maze, which nobody ever could find, was the only bush that bore only white roses, right at the center of the maze. Hidden underneath it, a pair of stones waited that marked a final resting place.

Unexpectedly, the portal opened up right there in the center of the maze. Emerging through the portal, Kelly carried Kylie’s body. With silent, gentle grace, he placed Kylie’s body down upon the ground, right next to the two stones.

Rest well, Kylie, Kelly prayed, kneeling on the ground, Guard us well, Mum. Reverently, Kelly used his hand to perform an Anglican blessing over the stones.

Mum, Kylie mumbled, quite exhausted, We’ve come back. Closing her eyes, she allowed herself to slip into sweet unconsciousness, as green energy flowed out of her body. All at once, her power over plants flushed right through the entire garden in a sweeping wave. Refusing to stop, relent, or ease, the green power ushered along, revitalizing every single plant it touched almost instantly. Roses were not the only new plant. Irises, daisies, marigolds, blue bonnets, and even Indian paintbrushes generated themselves right on the spot. Bees and butterflies began to take notice, as the beautiful aromatic symphony spread out beyond the borders of the rose garden. Brand new grass and patches of clover and shamrocks created themselves up to one foot away from the border of the garden.

Brilliant, luv, Kelly brushed his sister’s hair as she peacefully slept! Utterly smashing. Dear sister, this is quite impressive, even for you. Perhaps tomorrow we can visit Israel? Kelly placed his hands flat down on the revived grass at the center of the garden. He yawned, and clicked his teeth. Looking about at his fantastic new surroundings, Kelly closed his eyes. A delicate butterfly landed on his nose, tickling it.

Hello, the butterfly said to him. I think it’s wonderful what that girl has done; brining out garden to life again.

How can you be speaking to me, Kelly asked, Am I dreaming?

No, the butterfly told him, You’re a friend of nature. Otherwise, I couldn’t talk to you, and probably wouldn’t want to anyway. Tell that young lady thank you for us, would you please? We’re all very grateful.

We’re all, Kelly asked, feeling rather befuddled, I don’t comprehend…

The butterflies and bees, silly human, the butterfly laughed. Oh look, here comes a robin! At once, the butterfly flittered away from Kelly and flew upward to greet the robin. Maybe he’ll call some other birds. They love to spread good news.

Good news, Kelly started to drift off to sleep, satisfied at what he heard. Wait, Kelly, he said to himself, slapping himself across the face. He actually slapped a little too hard, and hurt himself, just slightly. Have a care, bloke. If the entire natural world seems attracted to this garden, it shaln’t take too long for people to notice, too. What if we’re discovered as we sleep? That would be more than a spot of bother, wouldn’t it? Bloody nightmare this turned out to be, ’asn’t it, Kel? So ’ow to keep people out? Swiftly, he snapped his fingers, and grinned. A sanctuary! Shutting his eyes, Kelly too fell asleep as purple power fled his body and formed a shell around the rose garden. The animals could all come and go as they pleased, but humans could not. Protected behind a tiny shell of faint lilac magic, Kelly let himself sleep at last, as the sanctuary shielded the pair of them for a while.

All at once, there was a brilliant flash from a camera. Standing there, amongst a crowd of forty people, was an African-American man, with green eyes and a long nose, as well as puffy cheeks. His hair was balding, and he wore a white turtleneck sweater and a pair of blue jeans with a simple belt. He held a camera and a tape-recorder. Standing beside him was a beautiful African-American girl in a loose grey shirt with half of her breasts exposed. She had long flowing hair, a crimson skirt of barely any material reinforcing her thin scarlet pants, and fashionable boots. Her eyes were violet, and she held a walking stick. Also in the crowd of people was a teenage boy, with a pair of glasses, with his hair dyed dark kettle black, wearing a dark sapphire shirt with brown pants. He wore a fanny pack.

Yes, Father, the African-American girl said, This is the place.

But how did you know that anything was even happening here, Zulieka, the African-American man asked her, with a strong Jamaican accent? We were together.

Something crashed, Daddy, Zulieka insisted, Aliens are here. I can feel it.

Little girl, the man answered her sternly, There’s no such thing as aliens. You and all that supernatural weirdness you’ve been caught up in since your mother died…

If you didn’t believe me, Zulieka insisted, Then why are we here?

Because someone called me to report the dead garden was alive again, Zee. Nothing else. Now, the African-American man started to work with his tape recorder, Get behind me and warm up the camera. Zulieka ran through the crowd, which backed off for her, as they milled about. She rushed over to a turquoise Mazda, and unlocked a door with a key that she removed from thin air. Once she did that, she grabbed a film camera and ran back to her father’s side. Again, people backed away from her, allowing her through, as she started to set the camera up behind her father’s back.

Excuse me, but is this a story, sir, the young man in blue and brown inquired, tapping the African-American man on the shoulder? Without any hesitation, there was a bolt of yellow lighting flying high above the skies. It zigzagged around in the air, and then started to turn around in a circular pattern. Spiraling down, it began to descend, quickly, until it started to form. Within seconds, the lighting had transformed into a man who wore a yellow and silver costume, with a silver lightning bolt on his chest, knee-high black boots, and a flowing silver cape, carrying a sword.

Maverick, cheered a woman! Everyone started to applaud.

Thank god, it’s Maverick, announced a man!

Hey, Maverick, great to see you, shouted another man!

    Hooray, shouted two little boys.

Never fear, the man in the costume turned to everyone, and secreted a very tiny sparkle of yellow electricity from his hands. I’m here. Maverick will take care of everything.

It’s certainly a story now, the African-American man declared. Zee, is the camera ready yet?

It’s coming on, now, Daddy, Zulieka said. You’re on in five, four, three two!

Thank you, Zee, the African-American man said as Maverick advanced toward him. This is Francois Tribliuex, channel eight news, coming to you live with an exclusive scoop. Maverick, over here, please! Monsieur Tribliuex, channel eight news.

Hello, Monsieur, Maverick, the man in yellow and silver, said. Do you know what’s going on here?

Just a few minutes ago, Francois said, The rose garden resurrected itself right at the same time that I received word of an… an abnormal event in this region. So far, we don’t know what’s going on, though someone, he glared back at Zulieka with a disapproving eye, Suggested we were being invaded by aliens.

Can’t say I’ve had too many encounters with those, Maverick said.

Sir, the young man in blue and brown rushed over to him, Do you think Sheridan’s back?

Aren’t you one of his little flunkies, Maverick asked?

I used to be, Sir, Percival Wonkalski, he said proudly. But I haven’t seen him since last month.

Who is this Sheridan, Francois interrupted them?

Just some obnoxious wizard who tried to kidnap a boy, Maverick said, But I stopped that. He showed up again in London and took a girl from her own wedding last month.

Are you suggesting that it could be him again, Francois inquired?

I doubt it, Maverick said, "If it were Sheridan, he wouldn’t be refreshing a garden."

No, it’s not him, Zulieka interjected, keeping her eyes on the camera. The aura’s different. With him I felt so much, ooh, she shuddered, Evil.

    Not now, Zee, Francois growled!

Let me be the judge, Maverick pushed Percival down. Stay with the reporter, kid.

No argument here, Percival answered, crawling over to Francois. Maverick walked along to the border of the rose garden, and crashed straight into a wall of invisible energy. It knocked him down on his back

Chuh, the crowd gasped! He jumped up onto his booted feet.

What’s this, Maverick asked, feeling around with his hands, but unable to penetrate the energy barrier. Some kind of force field.

Nothing technological, Percival said, Mister Maverick. At least nothing from Earth’s technology.

He’s right, Zulieka cheerfully walked over. It’s witchcraft. Percival and Zulieka flinched when they saw each other.

Stop, Francois grabbed Zulieka by the arm and pulled her backwards. Stay here. Let Maverick take the chances. Then he knelt down and whispered into Zulieka’s ear. Quit spreading that craziness.

He’s right, young lady, Maverick continued to feel around the barrier. Leave this to me. Unable to get through the barrier physically, Maverick then generated a ball of lightning. Okay, since this won’t open on its own, let’s see how long it can resist me! Everybody better back away!

It won’t do you any good, Zulieka mused, rather loudly.

Get back, I said, Maverick shouted!

Chuh, we really are being invaded, Francois gasped. The crowd obediently stepped backwards, including Francois. Zulieka and Percival alone remained where she was, fascinated by the sight, close to Maverick.

So, Percival clicked his tongue in anger at her as he whipped around to face her, Zulieka. We meet again. I’ve never forgiven you for robbing me! Or burning down my lab!

I had to do something to stop you, Zulieka replied. You stole a diamond necklace from Blaire Jewelry, and I saw you do it!

No, I borrowed it, Percival argued! Just long enough to complete my experiment, then I was going to give it back when my ray device was finished. Next thing I know, you not only take the necklace, you rummage through my books and studies, taking everything that isn’t nailed down.

So you threw acid at me, Zulieka hissed. Lucky for me it didn’t work.

Yeah, Percival groaned, I know. You overturned my chemicals and started a fire, and I don’t even know how you did it!

Whoever you are, Maverick shouted with as much bravado as he could muster, And whatever evil force you represent, you should know you face the might of Earth’s protector, Maverick! Now let me in there or I’ll cut my own way through! There was no change. Okay then, have it your way!

Ooh, the crowd cheered on, hoping for his victory as he threw all of his gathered electrical energy right at the barrier. A flash of purple sorcery, merely for one instant, revealed the entire shell of the barrier, then the lightning power deflected away, off into the air. His lightning burst out through the sky, enlightening everything for an instant.

Huh, Maverick asked? All right, that does it! He grabbed his sword, and viciously swung it, trying to hack at the barrier. His sword only reverberated back at it the touch of the barrier’s force.

Back off, Zulieka marched right up to the barrier, catching Maverick by surprise. She removed a magic wand from out of nowhere, and held it firmly in her hands. Whoever made this is a magician, and there’s only one good way to deal with a magician! Eradication! She ran her fingers along her wand gently, charging it. Forcefully, she jammed the wand into the energy barrier. Scarlet magic collided with the purple magic, evaporating the barrier in mere seconds. Immediately afterwards, a powerful wave of green force knocked everyone off their feet, and knocked the camera down.

Whoa, Francois groaned as he fell over.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the crown groaned, as they fell over, too.

Ah, Zulieka fell down, too. Maverick alone had the dexterity to maintain his footing, but it was not at all easy for him. Heroically, he grabbed Zulieka and saved her before she could finish landing and hurt herself. Thanks.

Bad move, kid, Maverick said, I would’ve had it if I’d had another minute.

What about that force wave, Zulieka countered, getting back onto her feet? My spell didn’t cause that! Someone else made that happen! Now somebody’s in that garden.

Or something, Percival agreed. Slowly, the crowd started to get back on their feet again.

This is serious, Francois said back to the camera, We could be under an enemy attack. Anyone have a cell phone, he called out to the crowd?

I have one, a woman replied.

Call the cops then, you idiot, Francois snapped! Zee, get back here! Please!

Go back to your father, kid, Maverick insisted.

No, Zulieka answered, refusing to move. Waving her off, Maverick walked into the garden. Once his back was turned, Zulieka ran in right behind him.

Oh no, Francois cried out, Zee! Zee! Zulieka! Somebody do something! Oh my god! He started to hyperventilate.

Kelly, Kylie awakened, disturbed and worried, though she was still very exhausted. She shook Kelly, trying to revive him.

    Oh, Kelly asked?

Kelly, Kylie warned, Something’s wrong. The roses say we’re being invaded. I tried a nova force spell to drive them back, but they’re still coming.

Hmm, Kelly looked around him, but he did not yet see any evidence of an interloper. Worried, he closed his eyes, and he could feel only one thing. Me sanctuary, Kelly sighed. Someone’s broken it. Best that we disappear. Quickly, he held his hands together, and concentrated. Power of the chameleon. Power of the chameleon. Magically, he blended instantly into the environment slowly, making him effectively invisible to anyone who entered.

Without a doubt, Kylie agreed, and she turned back to see Kelly. But his spell worked. She looked around, but could not see him. Brilliant, brother dear, save yourself and forsake me. Get back ’ere and take me with you!

It’s too late for that, Maverick jumped over the rose bushes and landed on his feet, his sword drawn and electrical energy going everywhere. Kylie stepped forward, lifting up her arms in preparation to defend herself. Who are you and what do you want here?

A mistake, Sir, Kylie explained. We intended to go to England. Pity Kelly panicked and took off without me. When he heard this, Maverick looked at Kylie, and stood right in his tracks.

Kylie, Maverick smiled, relaxing. I should have known. Nobody else cares about this rose garden.

Quite, Sir, Kylie nodded. By the way, Steve and the other Knights are doing rather well, if you do not count the death of Robert Gantromille. They joined the Thaydonian navy. Maverick grinned with silent pride at this.

That’s my boy, Maverick placed his hands on his hips, Following my footsteps. I knew he’d come to his senses eventually. But why did Robert die?

Robert betrayed us, Kylie said, He was working for Sheridan all along.

Firefog, shouted Zulieka suddenly. Maverick and Kylie were taken off guard, for they could not see her, and she could not see them. Despite how fast she had run, she could not keep up with Maverick, so she decided not to. Within seconds, scarlet fog filled the entire garden, though it was hardly a moist fog. It felt warm and acrid, ready to combust into flames. And then, Zulieka lit a match. Explosive fire and smoke filled the air, blasting everything and setting the entire garden ablaze.

    What the hell, Maverick groaned!

Take that, warlock, Zulieka screamed, well camouflaged in the flames.

Rain, Kylie insisted, throwing up her hands. Enchanted viridian rain instantly poured down from the spontaneously forming storm clouds above, dousing the flames and washing the fog away. It also protected the majority of the plants, and restored a bit of breathable air. Now came the moment when Kylie and Zulieka saw each other clearly.

The sorceress of Shandigore, Zulieka realized, kneeling before Kylie in a respectful bow.

The enemy, Kylie suddenly recognized her, remembering her from the divination before. I’ve no quarrel with you. Let me depart, please. Kylie headed toward the center’s exit.

But I’ve got one with you, Zulieka answered, blocking her path. You were helping that warlock!

No, Maverick insisted, Of course she wasn’t. I used to think so, too, but she drove him away. Without her, we’d never have beaten him!

And you had to have been the one, Zulieka suddenly divined, as she looked at Kylie’s face, That he kidnapped from London last month, weren’t you? Proof positive, Mister Maverick! She’s on his side!

Lies and slander, Kylie scoffed. Typical American. Leave me be and I’ll go on me way!

I don’t think so, Zulieka answered. Suddenly, Percival and Francois arrived, along with a woman from the crowd. She had blonde hair, and a peach jacket, an orange shirt, and brown pants, as she carried the camera.

Wow, she said, taping Maverick excitedly, Maverick! My big break. Won’t Professor Hastings be impressed!

She’s Lena Cororthers, Francois explained, A film student at Reeshlowe University. She took over the camera when I went to save my Zee. Now what’s going on here?

Well, Maverick started, but Zulieka cut him off, pointing at Kylie with her hand bitterly.

It’s an invasion all right, Monsieur Tribliuex, Zulieka said, That girl works for the warlock who attacked us all!

Then that means, Francois paranoidly turned to Percival, It’s no accident you were here, either.

Percival, Kylie asked, and her face brightened up to see her rival, and friend.

Hey, Kylie, Percival waved at her, How are you, girl, and where’s the King?"

Oh, right, Kylie covered her mouth, There is no way you could know. Sheridan is dead.

No, Percival sank down where he stood, feeling faint. Kylie went over to him and wrapped him in her arms to keep him warm and forestall shock.

Sheridan, she says. Proof positive, Zulieka insisted! Aren’t you going to stop her, Maverick?

Stop me from what, Kylie shouted? With that, she resumed her efforts to help Percival, as tears fell down from his face. It was necessary, Percival. If Sheridan ’ad survived, no one else would ’ave.

Aren’t you going to do something about her, Zulieka goaded Maverick?

That’s enough out of you, Maverick replied, grabbing Zulieka. It’s not what you think. I know those people. He released her, and she wandered around Kylie.

Yeah, well I know her, too, Zulieka barked! Used to work at the ‘Vienna House, right?

And you used to tell fortunes until Scott exposed you for a fake, Kylie countered. Now you think know magic.

I know I do, Zulieka said. Want me to prove it? Lightning storm! Spreading out of Zulieka’s hands, electrical currents began swirling around.

That’s not how you use lightning, Maverick told her, grabbing a bolt of lightning with his hand. Capturing the energy, he commanded it silently, and corrected its course until it returned to the sky, flashing through the air, then dispersing harmlessly.

Kylie, Kelly’s voice intruded upon Kylie’s thoughts, but no one else could hear the telepathy. Leave this to me. Tell them all you’ve come to stop a dragon.

A what? What are you going to do, Kylie asked by merely thinking?

Do as I say, Kelly thought back!

Everyone, please, Kylie warned at the top of her lungs, Since you must know why I’m ’ere, I came to stop a renegade dragon, and I must insist that all of you abscond while you still can.

I don’t see a dragon anywhere, Maverick remarked.

Growl! From out of nowhere, a lavender dragon appeared. He was quite large, with beautiful scales that shimmered with the sun, and blinded everyone for just a moment. Grinning, the dragon revealed his massive rows of teeth, just like a tiger shark’s.

Kylie, Maverick shouted at the top of his lungs, realizing that he was wrong, I’ll handle this! Get everyone out of here while you can!

It’s her I want, the dragon declared! Not some super-zero! Wiggling his gigantic tail, the dragon created purple spirals of magic, which he thrust out at Maverick. The spirals sent Maverick flying up into the air. But in the air, Maverick righted himself, and threw lightning in a blast against the dragon, who blocked the attack with his right arm, creating a shield of purple magic that deflected the lightning. Caught in the ricochet, Maverick was struck by his own lightning. He staggered, shocked and stunned, and the brave superhero collapsed.

Maverick, Kylie ran to the superhero, but did not touch him because she knew better than to mess with lightning until it was completely absorbed. What is going on ’ere, Kylie snarled, her breath hard and fast, and her eyes wild with anger!

Kylie, Percival did not know what to do. Turning away, Kylie placed her hands upon Maverick’s chest. She released green magic, which healed some of his wounds straight away.

Spare her, Maverick pleaded as he regained consciousness, Take me.

You? Kelly laughed! Why should I want you, super-zero, when I’ve got a witch right here to help me out? Sorry, Maverick, but we do have to go now, and if you try to save her, the dragon ran his hand over Kylie’s neck. She gulped, getting afraid. But fear was not Kylie’s strong suit. Never in her life had Kylie been fond of being held as anyone’s hostage.

Release me, Kylie gagged, as her breathing was still inhibited.

    Never, the dragon declared.

I said, release me, Kylie bashed the dragon in the chest with her fists! A flash of green magic escaped from her body. Her magic spread over him, leaving his dragon body frozen with green ice. Then she broke herself free and landed on the ground.

Here, Percival said, taking Kylie by the hand and leading her away.

This is madness, Kylie cried out. What’s ’appening?

As usual, Kylie, Maverick said, breaking the psychic contact between the two Brits, I step in to rescue you, but you’ve already freed yourself. Heroically, Maverick jumped over everyone and landed in front of the frozen dragon. I’ve got your ass now, beast, Maverick declared, and once again he gathered lightning in his hands. Hiayh! Quickly, Maverick hit the dragon in the chest with a flurry of powerful punches, each of which built up an electrical charge. Finally, Maverick hit the dragon with a roundhouse kick, and threw all of his yellow electricity at the poor beast.

Growl, it moaned as it quaked and quivered from the force of the lightning.

You are not, Kylie approached the dragon, Going to capture me, and force me to aid your black master Kylie barked! For I shaln’t allow it. Be gone, beast, before I turn you into a human! Closing her eyes, Kylie touched a rose. Green energy escaped from her body, and all of the roses in the garden fired themselves like a cannon, right at the poor dragon. The dragon backed away, only to be caught by a sneaky uppercut attack from Maverick, followed by a handstand kick from Kylie that sent the dragon flying. Turning himself into lightning again, Maverick swooped up into the air, capturing the dragon, and smacking him in the face. With that, they landed, and Maverick held the dragon with one hand, while generating yet another round of lightning in his other hand.

Goodnight, beast, Maverick snarled, and hit the dragon’s face. Kelly passed out. Kylie went to Kelly, and performed a quick medical check on him.

Archimago’s messenger dragon is defeated, Kylie declared. That is who was after me. A wizard named Archimago, who likes to trap knights. He wanted me assistance with a spell, but I refused, and so ’e sent the dragon after me. Thank you, Maverick, for ’elping me. Francois applauded, as he walked over to Kylie.

Young lady, are you all right, Francois inquired?

Hey, Maverick stepped next to Francois, then looked at him. Let her breathe a little, okay? She’s just had a traumatic experience.

I understand, Francois sympathetically said, Tomorrow we’ll do an interview.

Of course, Maverick said, though Kylie pretended not to hear them.

Exactly what happened here, Francois asked? Are we in any danger?

Not anymore, Maverick said. Zulieka crossed her arms. What happened was that Miss Moriarty over there was being chased by a dragon, because she refused to help the villain who created it. But I will track him down and bring that scumbag to justice. Never fear. As for Kylie, she was the one who restored the rose garden, because her family used to tend it.

I see, Francois said, nodding. Now it starts to make more sense. And that barrier?

Clearly Miss Moriarty erected it, Maverick said, Since there’s no question now that she is indeed a witch, to protect herself from that mage. His dragon broke through, and would have taken her, but thanks to me, that didn’t happen. Maverick placed his hands on his hips, and then carried the dragon away.

Well, Francois said, You saw it all here first folks. This has been Francois Tribliuex, reporting. We’re going to continue to bring you updates on this story. Once again, it seems that that yet another wizard has attacked us, but Maverick saved the day. Again. Though, I do wonder. Miss Moriarty, was it, Francois went to Kylie? She looked up at him, and sighed. She knew now that there was no escaping the publicity.

Uh, please, she begged, After being nearly captured by that man, please…

Just one question, Francois asked? Are you really a witch? Everyone waited for her answer with baited breath.

Oh, all right. Yes, I suppose you do deserve to know the truth. Proudly, she stood up and brushed the hair out of her face. Me name is Kylie Pendragon. Moriarty was me maiden name. Me ’usband was killed by Sheridan’s agents, and I was captured, but I escaped. Now a minor magician who calls ’imself Archimago wants me to aid ’im, but he cannot ’ave me! And yes, since you must know, I confess it. Kylie walked over to the roses, and touched them. Once again, the rose garden was immediately replenished and beautified, and it was all captured on camera. There, now it’s out; I am a witch. That’s why people won’t stop bothering me. Now please, leave me alone. I must finish the gardening.

Perfect, Francois smiled. Thank you. Lena, cut it.

Sure, Lena said, turning off the camera. Wow, a major news story. What happens now?

We get this to the studio, and with a bit of editing, we’ve got ourselves a scoop.

Yyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! The crowd outside of the garden sounded uproarious. From the electricity in the air, Maverick had obviously come outside with his prisoner, to the adulation of the people.

Let’s go get some local reaction, Francois suggested.

Okay, Lena complied, and the two of them left. Kylie went over to Percival.

Well, that was a crock of shit, Zulieka announced. That whole trick didn’t fool me for a minute. Really! You may have been able to fool my dingbat of a Father, but you’re not going to pull one over on me. Now where is Sheridan?

    Dead, Kylie answered.

Let me see your hand, Zulieka demanded. Mourning for Sheridan silently, quietly, Kylie acquiesced, showing her open palm to Zulieka. Then, Zulieka pointed her middle finger at the ground underneath Kylie’s feet, and started a fire. Forcefully, she pulled Kylie’s hand over the fire. Kylie accepted this, but looked at Zulieka with questioning eyes. Cautiously, Zulieka traced the lines of Kylie’s hand, which Kylie allowed, until finally, Zulieka’s eyes bugged out. So it’s true, Zulieka realized. Why not just say so?

No opportunity afforded itself, Kylie said. Besides, you refused to believe it. Counter-question, Kylie stated. Pray, tell, where did you learn that power?

What power, Zulieka asked? Kylie held her hand over Zulieka’s newly created fire, and green frost sprayed out, dousing the flames before they could do anything.

That one, Kylie reiterated. It burns anyone who lies, and spares the truthful.

Forgive me, Zulieka bowed. I misunderstood. I knew your magics and his had crossed paths. Just being at the remains of the Pinochle club was enough to tell me that, but I didn’t realize that you and Sheridan were…

We weren’t, Kylie replied. Me actions were done to protect the balance. Sheridan was bipolar and refused to use ’is medications. There was no other way. Stop dodging me question. I asked where you learned that power.

From my Master, Zulieka explained. He wanted me to find you, and ask you about Sheridan. How did you know?

Because I’ve endured that ritual before, Kylie stated, Only a single time, and from a man who tried to kill me. Does me answer about Sheridan satisfy, Kylie replied?

Me, perhaps, Zulieka mulled it over, But not my Master.

So he’s really dead, Percival sighed? Then he hid his face in his hands, and cried once again, weeping bitterly. All this time, I thought he’d come back for me.

Me deepest apologies, Percival, Kylie sighed, mourning Sheridan herself, But I simply ’ad no choice anymore. Bi-polar men who refuse medication…

No, you did right, Percival said, though he still lamented. Again, she held him to keep him warm. He pushed her away, but she refused to leave.

If I might inquire, Percival, ’ow precisely did you manage a return to Earth?

A return to, Zulieka interjected, her eyebrows raised? You mean you guys are from somewhere else?

I’m a local kid, Percival stated, Kylie and Kelly are from England. Sheridan’s from around here, too. But there’s another world, where Sheridan was a King. We’ve all been there, Maverick too. I came back to this world when Scott thought he killed me. I followed Scott, thinking I’d get revenge, but I find this guy instead. Percival turned to Kylie. His name was Javexus. By the way, Kylie, are you okay?

I’ve merely used a more powerful spell than I should ’ave been casting, Kylie answered, That is why we are back. To think, we believed our big problem would be Lord Error.

Who, Zulieka wondered? That is all you shall get from me, Kylie declared to Zulieka coldly, Now leave us both to grieve in peace!

Forget it, Zulieka shouted! I need to know more. Is there another world out there that people can travel to? My Master demands that I give him answers, Madame, and you have those answers! Zulieka’s nostrils flared up, and she began to breathe quite heavily, Now tell me everything you know!

Depart, please, Kylie coldly turned her back to Zulieka. We’ve shared too much with you already.

Kylie, Kelly telepathically said, Meet me at Brenda Blaire’s place. Maverick is taking me there.

I’m easy, Kylie said. Lovely to see you again, Percival, but we rather must dash. Excuse me, Miss, uh, Zulieka?

Tribliuex, Zulieka corrected her. Zulieka Tribliuex. Daddy’s French-Caribbean.

Uh, Kylie, Percival requested, Could I please be alone?

As you like it, Kylie coldly stood up. Without even saying goodbye, Kylie touched a patch of grass with the tip of her tennis shoe, and then she disappeared, with green sparkles.

Wow, Zulieka exclaimed! Is she for real?

Oh yes, Percival cried, I’m real, too. Really angry with you.

Your books were useless. Except the ones that mentioned her, that is. I don’t care about you, Zulieka looked down at the grass Kylie disappeared into, and clutched her chin. But my Master, now he’s really in to her. Where is she going?

    Back to London, probably.

I wonder, Zulieka answered. She reached into her pocket and threw some crystals on the ground. Oh really, she realized as she started to examine the pattern of the crystals. Percival looked at her in disbelief, as Zulieka gave him a wicked smile. So that’s where you’ve gone to hide? Well you can’t hide from me, Kylie Pendragon. I’ll get the truth out of you, no matter what, or my Father isn’t Francois Tribliuex! I promise you, Master, I’ll get her to talk yet!

    Chapter 2

    Salamander in the garden

Such an elegant place, one would think that it belonged to Kings and Queens. The land was quite large, with a myriad of colorful leaves. All of the flowers in this gorgeous garden had turned gorgeous colors, auburn, orange, peach, gold, yellow, crimson, and scarlet. The leaves from the fallen trees had been moved into a very large pile on the side nearest to the flowers. They were allowed to stay because they accented the flowers. On the perfectly manicured ground, there were extraordinarily expensive land decorations. One of them was a wicker ghost. Another was a pair of skeletons, painted statues sitting side by side and staring at each other, each holding a crossing bone. This created a large x pattern in their crossing bones. Beyond all that was a sculpture of a witch flying above a globe on a broomstick, which tellingly, only had the United States and the ocean. Yet, the most outlandish of them all was a tremendous pumpkin with a spookily carved face, stuck straight in the dead center of the garden. A small round moat protected it. Behind it, almost within it, was the American flag. And far up the hill, at the very edge of this considerably immense garden, protected by a round grey stone wall, was an elegant mansion three stories high, and painted a most appropriate shade of Halloween orange and black. Black cat decorations were hung everywhere outside.

Maverick appeared first, landing deftly on his booted feet.

Oof, Kelly cried out as he landed in the pile of leaves to the side. Though he was the one who had played the role of the dragon, he had now regained his human form. Rolling his eyes, Maverick trudged through the snow and went to Kelly. He grabbed him by the hand and jerked him back up onto his feet.

    Get up, Maverick demanded!

My my, Kelly said, brushing his purple clothes off, Where in the world are we? It’s so gaudy and grotesque, he noticed all the decorations around him, I’d say we were in Hell!

Worse, Maverick replied. Blaire Mansion. Wind arose up from the sky, briefly, causing some of the leaves started to blow into Kelly’s hair, but it did not really bother Maverick, in his yellow and silver mask and costume. What a weird setup.

You can say that again, Kelly agreed.

Hey, shouted a female voice, What’s going on out there?

Whatever you young vandals are up to, a second voice, much younger, and far more masculine called out, You had better get, before we call the police!

How do we handle this, Kelly asked Maverick?

Just play along, Maverick laughed, I’m an old hat at this. Without warning, he grabbed Kelly again and held him from behind with his arms.

Stay away from Brenda Blaire, thief, Maverick ordered, revealing his hands as they began to glow with bright golden lightning, Or you will know a gigawat feels like!

What in the world, gasped a young maid with curly blonde hair and a typical maid uniform, running down to the edge of the garden? Immediately behind her was a handsome young man, wearing a grey formal sweater, brown shoes, a brown tie, and dirty grey pants, stained with mud. His hair was dark, and he had little stubble on his face. As for his flesh, it was a beautiful, dark shade of bronze, and his hands were calloused and hard, especially for a teenage boy. Furthermore, he wore a belt, with several gardening tools stuck within it for convenient reach. Quickly, he pulled out his garden spade.

I don’t believe it, the lad pointed the spade at Maverick and Kelly! Mr. Blaire, Mr. Blaire!

I will have Miss Blaire! She’s going to be mine, Kelly snarled, catching on to the fact that, though he had returned to human form, the ruse had not yet ended.

Oh shut up, Maverick said, staring at the young lady.

Ahh, the maid screamed, and she ran off back toward the house. But the young man stayed put, and put his fists into a boxing position.

So much as try it, he shouted, And you’ll to face me! I’m not afraid of you!

Let me handle this, kid, Maverick insisted, looking at the young man.

This boy thinks he can take me on, Kelly laughed? Hope you ate your cereal!

Bernardo Tarik to you, the young man barked back, staring Kelly down.

Really, Kelly remarked, I thought you were nothing but the gardener!

Help, the maid yelled desperately. Just as she nearly reached the mansion, Kylie stepped out from the ground. In a shower of forest-green sparks, Kylie transformed into herself again.

Thank goodness for Project Hercules, Kylie said, wiping mud off her clothes as she stood there in the grass.

Oh my god, the maid breathed. She lowered her hands to her sides, closed her eyes, and tried to calm herself down. Am I going crazy? I just thought I saw Maverick holding an intruder again…

Grand, Kylie sighed. I as much as leave those men alone for five seconds, and already things ’ave gone to Hades in a hand basket.

Wait, the maid insisted, What on earth is going on?

A wizard tried to kidnap me with a dragon, but I escaped ’im, so now ’e’s after Miss Blaire, Kylie answered her bluntly. And I came to warn ’er. Clearly the mage arrived before me, but not before Maverick.

And who are you, the maid inquired?

Me? Kylie seemed rather taken aback by the question, but then she simply smiled at her politely. Why, I’m a witch.

Oh god, the maid found her legs quivering, so, unable to do anything else, she utterly collapsed. She put her hands on her head. I am going crazy. What am I going to tell Mr. Blaire?

You’re going to tell him that Brenda… Kylie opened her mouth, then closed it again.

That Brenda what, a very charismatic woman forcefully demanded? Kylie and the maid both turned to her, surprised that she had suddenly arrived, with a clipboard full of papers and plans, which she intensely scribbled with. She wore a carnation pink cocktail dress, with a beautiful crimson coat, and a pair of gorgeous rose high heels. That Brenda, what, young woman?

Missus Blaire, Rhoda’s jaw dropped. Forgive me for failing you, but I…

Rhoda, Missus Blaire insisted to the maid, You were sent to find out what all that chaos was in my garden, not to simply stand there in the grass! My daughter’s Halloween costume ball shall not be disrupted by anything! Missus Blaire glared at Kylie with disgust, revolted at Kylie’s clothes, Or anyone. And where’s that boy?

Madame Blaire, Kylie stood quickly. She held her hand out, and created a bushel of deep pink roses. Then she politely placed them at the woman’s feet. I came to bring news to Brenda on this All Hallow’s eve day. Sheridan came to capture you, but Maverick ’as defeated ’im. And even better, I came to tell her to worry not for Steve, for ’e ’as a good job now, making adequate money.

Him working? Missus Blaire crossed her arms. As what?

A naval officer. Be at peace, Madame Blaire.

Kylie, Brenda shouted, running out of the house! Kylie’s eyes bulged, stunned by what she was looking at. Brenda’s hair was beautiful, of moderate length and fashionable style. She wore a lemon dress, with rose highlights, that was in the highest of fashion. Furthermore, she wore a gold coat, and a mauve boa was wrapped around her. Lastly, Brenda wore a pair of black boots that went up to her knee, very fashionable and chic.

Brenda, Kylie stammered, in complete relief. It is quite agreeable to see you again. Did me medicine work correctly?

Who is this crazy girl, Brenda, Missus Blaire sneered?

Mom, this is Kylie, Brenda explained, The one I told you about. As you’ve probably guessed by now, Ky, this is my Mother, Lucinda Blaire. Excitedly, Brenda walked over to Kylie, until she was standing face to face with her. Kylie was nervous, so Brenda smiled. "Relax, Kylie, we’re
