    Getting ready

Cardinals sang sweetly in the tree, chirping softly, singing a beautiful chorus in the soft morning fog of London, calm and crisp to the taste. Leaves, scarlet, peach, rose, and mustard in color, had been neatly piled on the sidewalk of the streets of the London suburbs. A quiet, quick rush of wind blew by, seizing the paper-thin leaves and carrying them up into the air. These leaves blew toward a lovely house, recently painted a lovely shade of calming forest green. The wind was soft and gentle, and the leaves in its grip, empowered by the autumn wind, beat against the side panels of the house with a lightness and pleasance. Another set of leaves flew up toward the house, but this time, a window on this house opened unexpectedly. A teenage girl, wearing a beautiful white dress, with a soft light green scarf that wrapped around her neck and her shoulders, sliding down to her bare feet, opened the window. The leaves flew directly toward her, but with a mere wave of her hand, she turned them away. Rescued from the wind, the leaves fell at the girl’s bare feet, a single one landing on her dress and getting caught there. She reached down to the leaf, then withdrew her hand. At that moment, her crimson hair shook off from its veil and snapped back into its shape, or more precisely, the hair’s lack of shape, since this hair was very seldom combed. If this girl noticed, she did not seem to care.

I’ll leave you alone, she said to the leaf softly, happily. The girl looked out the window and smiled. Bless you, birds, bless you, London, this will be the most wonderful day of me life. Thank you.

Kylie, asked a woman on the other side of the door. Kylie looked around her again. This room was once the family’s attic, where they kept all of their junk. By now the junk was gone, and the room had been emptied, all of the decorations removed except for an antique pine dresser and a chair. Even the carpet had been removed. There were makeup and hairbrushes on this dresser, on a silver trey, with the mirror atop. But Kylie, clearly, had not touched any of them. Only a single calendar was in this room, with a picture of Big Ben on top, and several days crossed off in red pen.

September fifteenth, 2005, the calendar indicated. Aside from the calendar, the only other thing that was opened in this empty room was the closet. Opposite the closet was the door to the room, and it was from this door that the knocking came.

Yes? Asked Kylie, as she walked around to the door. How can I help you?

Kylie, answered the African-American woman with a light laugh as she opened the door, to reveal a middle-aged woman wearing a light green dress. It was a gorgeous dress, with a beautiful Celtic pattern on it with roses. Her hair was beautiful, having grown a bit, and she had curled it. Her nails were painted a very lovely shade of rose, and her eyeliner was quite sepia. You’re getting married in two hours and you’re not ready yet?

Anita, Kylie replied, I’m fine, this is just how I do things. This morning is so… so… so,

Nerve-wracking, Anita asked her with a worried face, Honey, she put her arm around Kylie’s shoulder, You don’t have to do this. There’s still time, though not much, to break it off. Is Morgan the boy you want?

Yes! Shouted Kylie, who instantly blanched, ashamed of her inappropriate volume. Kylie took a quiet breath to calm her nerves, up to a point. I mean, yes, she said with a much more reasonable volume, I choose Morgan Pendragon. I’ve decided. There is no fear in my heart, Anita; I can handle anything. Marriage to Morgan, despite me youth, holds no fear for me.

Then what is this, Anita asked her, and she walked with Kylie to the chair where she could sit and relax. Why aren’t you ready yet? What about your hair?

I am ready, Kylie declared, Ceremonies of this type are too much for me. The marriage is no matter. The ceremony itself is quite a different matter. Eloping would have been quite easier.

Not to Kelly, Anita sighed, And not to me. Your brother’s been dreaming of your marriage ever since he rejoined the seminary. This is his chance to learn to do it right, you know? Sarah, Morgan, we’re all pleased to be here.

I noticed, Kylie answered, That Robert was not included. There is no surprise there, of course. I’m so glad Morgan didn’t ask him to be best man. He asked his old friend James McAllister. And, I’m glad we didn’t invite the American warriors.

Hey, shouted an African-American teenage boy wearing a maroon shirt with a pair of blue jeans and white tennis shoes. He also wore a red jacket, and his hair was short and black. Furiously he stormed into the room and started to shake his finger at Kylie. Those Americans are our friends, right? God, mom, why are we still even talking to her?

She helped us get here, Robert, Anita countered gently, Now don’t go showing your butt today, boy, don’t you dare. This is Kylie’s wedding day, and we could really do without your attitude.

My attitude! Robert’s jaw dropped and he turned directly to his mother, looking her squarely in the eye. How can you say that to me? What an insult! It’s deplorable, that’s all, absolutely deplorable! I hate this house, I hate this country, he turned to Kylie again and tried to look into her eye, but she turned away from him. And most of all, Robert said slowly, I hate you, Kylie. I wish for the life of me that you would drop dead. Or would you like me to speed up the aging process for you? Shorten your hideous life span and rid us all of your insanity!

Get stuffed, Kylie rebuked. Robert, you have forgotten that I am more powerful than you, for while you are bound to manipulate the power of speed, I have all the magic of the earth and of nature to call by my side. I got rid of Sheridan, and you didn’t even bother to show up to the fight, wanker! Instead, you tried to kill me, a deal made with Sheridan to regain your powers. However, this is me wedding, and not even you shall interfere. Be gone, Robert Gantromille, for I do not wish to see you until we’re back from the honeymoon. Robert stood where he was, crossed arms and tapping feet. Be gone, Kylie shouted, and Robert could feel a powerful rush of wind starting to rise. Anita also looked at him with disgust, so Robert knew it was time to leave. He turned and left the room.

Are you all right? Anita asked kindly.

The nerve of him. Kylie snorted as her wind died down.

Let it be, Anita soothed, Now, let’s do something about that hair.

Robert stormed off through the house, seething with rage.

We’ve been in England now for a year, ever since Sheridan went away. Kylie only just turned seventeen, and, as Sarah won’t shut up about, she’s a registered nurse, too now, and now she wants to marry that idiot, Morgan. I curse you, Kylie, Robert hissed. I wish you every pain and misfortune! I want all your happiness turned into tears! May you be as miserable as I am! He walked through the hall of the house, where he noticed a white ceramic vase with painted blue flowers on it on a table in the hall, so he touched the vase with his hand and continued walking. Behind him, the vase shattered, but he did not care or even look back. Instead, Robert opened the door to Kylie’s own bedroom. There, he noticed, hanging in a frame protected by glass, a green paper which he looked at for a moment. It was a certificate of graduation from a nursing school program, along with a certification for biochemistry. This only made Robert even angrier. Outraged, he started to throw the books off of her shelves, but stopped when he saw a piece of paper, which he read.

Open the portal back to the Thousand realms? Why would she have this out? I wonder. Quickly, Robert put the paper into his pocket, and walked out of Kylie’s room.

    Chapter 2

    The return of the Prince

The interior of the church was beautiful, shaped like the Roman Coliseum, with a stage that split directly into the center and spread up to the end of the back wall, opposite from the front door. There were stairs, seven of them, going up to this stage, where the pulpit was to be found. This pulpit was made of solid oak, and it had a gigantic leather bound book spread out on top of it, opened. Every inch of this room was carpeted, with a carpet which was deep, royal sapphire blue in shade. As for the pews, spread out all over the place, they were made of wood, pine, and still retained the scent, with blue cushions on them. There were bibles and hymnals on the backs for easy reference. Each of the pews had white flowers tied to it at the ends nearest the walkway, which was not there before and would not be there again. These flowers were held in place by streamers that flowed all the way up to the walls, like spider legs. The walls, with streamers going up from the floor, were marble too. They were off-white, with just a hint of nutmeg brown. Stained glass windows of medieval images were everywhere; such as St. George and the dragon, and these stained glass windows, with colors of rose, lavender, peach, and carnation, mint, sky, and sunrinse, reached from the bottom of the floor to the top of the ceiling. Aside from the windows, there were relief carvings all over the walls, all over the place. Most of them were statues of the Virgin Mary, while a few were statues of the other saints, and one was a statue of Christ himself with open palms. The one at the very front of the stage was actually a scene of Christ and the twelve at the last supper. On the left-hand side, there was a large brown piano, beautiful and freshly polished. There, directly before this image, was the priest himself. He wore a green robe with crosses on it, and his body was old and worn. His hair was mostly gone, and his face had a thin moustache. The priest’s eyes were blue, and his hair was white, what he had of it. Kelly stood beside him, wearing a deep royal violet robe, and he looked at this man intently, paying attention to nothing else. Morgan walked into the room, wearing a black tuxedo, with polished black shoes and a red bowtie, as well as a brown leather watch, which Morgan looked at nervously. Sarah walked in with him, wearing a beautiful white wedding dress that looked like something escaped from ancient Greece, and her hair was elegantly twisted into a wrapped weave on the tope of her head, producing a beehive type of effect. Normally this would be hideous, but Sarah, wearing a Grecian headband and strings, created a perfect costume for the occasion.

Is that Hera herself who graces us for me sister’s wedding? Kelly asked when he saw Sarah.

Kelly, Sarah answered with a laugh, and turned her face away, smiling, It’s just me, Sarah. You know, Sarah Gantromille?

Aye, Kelly said, and then gave her a quick smile, But you’re dressed so smashingly, I just had to be sure your powers hadn’t turned you into a goddess. Kelly and Sarah both shared a soft laugh as Kelly offered Sarah a hand. She accepted, then walked over to the piano by herself. When she got there, she sat down and started to thumb through the music book.

Oh, it’s not going to happen, Morgan complained, pacing around the bottom of the stairs. She won’t come. This was too fast for her. I should have taken things more slowly.

Calm down, Kelly advised with a light laugh, She’ll be here. Anita will ensure that, certain enough.

Yeah, he’s right, Sarah agreed, and she turned herself back to Morgan, Everything will be fine. Just have a little faith.

Quite, agreed the priest, who gave a soft, quick nod to the boy, I’ve been through a million weddings, and only three have been runaway brides, so there’s little chance of that happening here. Gently, he offered Morgan his hand, which Morgan accepted, and Morgan smiled as he tried to gather his confidence.

Thank you, Father Beechum, Morgan sighed with a little feigned relief.

Can you believe it, asked a middle-aged woman in a teal dress and a turquoise feathered hat as she walked into the church with a man in a dark azure suit on her arm. He was bald, with a beard. Our Morgan getting married? Oh, Patrick, I could cry?

Really, Christine, replied Patrick, Our son is marrying that strange girl. What’s her name, Kayla?

Kylie, Morgan said to his parents, forcing himself to be happy. She’s got a good job lined up, and she’s got a nice house.

And a very eccentric family, Patrick warned. Christine hit him in the chest with her purse.

Stop that, Christine warned. She’s a very nice girl. Morgan certainly could have done a lot worse for himself.

Thanks, Morgan said politely, though he clearly disapproved of his family’s reaction.

I’m here, answered a slightly portly boy, wearing a plum-purple tuxedo. He wore a pair of glasses with very short blonde hair and cleanly shaven face. Somewhat short in stature, but still reasonably handsome, he looked around him. Then, the guy walked into the room and headed directly for Morgan, who walked up to him as well.

James, Morgan said, so relieved that he almost shouted, You made it. What a relief. Everyone, Morgan took James by the hand and started to lead him around the room, That’s Sarah, the bridesmaid, and that’s Kelly, the bride’s brother. I trust you know Father Beechum?

Not very well, James said, How do you do, sir?

Hello, Beechum replied, And very well, thank you.

This boy is James, my best man, Morgan said, And me mate from before school.

Not to mention the ring-bearer, Sarah answered, I’m pleased to meet you.

Are you ready? Anita called as she came into the room from the front door. Don’t be scared now, honey, Anita said, then she stopped moving entirely and took a nervous breath. Robert, seated at a pew near the door, rolled his eyes in loathing. But Morgan, Christine, Patrick, Sarah, Kelly, and Beechum watched the door closely, expectantly. A shadow appeared in the door, arm in arm with Anita, and then, there was a sudden blast of bright, golden light, so potent that Sarah turned her face to the piano, Kelly closed his eyes, Beechum looked at his feet, and Morgan shielded his eyes with his arm, yet unlike the others, he was willing to take a look. There, right before him, walking down the isle, led by Anita, was Kylie herself, like a vision in white with soft pale green to ease the strain, her dress shining like the sun, literally catching the sun’s light inside of it and accentuating it. Were it not for her scarf, the light would be unbearable. Kylie’s crimson hair had now been properly combed, and braided into a ponytail that went down to her left side, but only to just below her shoulder.

By Jove, Kelly gasped, That’s my sister.

Oh! Shrieked Sarah, who quickly covered up her mouth, Kylie, you’re beautiful! That’s so, so, ravishing.

What a lovely girl, Christine exclaimed. See why you need to keep your tongue on a leash, Patrick? Patrick did not say a single word.

So, Robert snarled, You actually cared enough to comb your hair today? What’s so special about that?

Shut up, Robert, Anita demanded. That is the last straw! You weren’t even invited here, so why don’t you just get out? This is Kylie’s wedding, Robert, and you won’t ruin it, no matter what! Now, get out! Robert pounded the pew with his fist, then he stood up on his feet and walked over to Kylie. The seething, angry, wheezing Anita placed her arm between Robert and Kylie, but Kylie just looked at Morgan, purposely ignoring Robert’s very presence.

Did you think I’d disappoint you, Morgan? Kylie asked him, shaking her head softly as she led Anita through toward the pulpit. When we’ve waited long enough for this day? Anita released Kylie as she stood there, not even daring to turn her face back up to Robert. Together, Kylie and Morgan embraced each other, with a disapproving scowl from Father Beechum, but the lovers did not care. They just hugged each other for a full minute, caring only for each other’s presence.

    Ahem, Kelly cleared his throat.

Oh, Kylie realized, and broke herself free of Morgan. Mister and Missus Pendragon, Kylie smiled at them sweetly, So good of you both to come.

How could we decline, Christine asked diplomatically? Morgan’s our only boy. We wouldn’t miss this for all the coffee in America. Patrick nodded silently.

I’m sorry, Morgan answered. It’s not you, Kylie. They never liked your mother. They thought she was a snob.

She was, Kylie replied. Morgan and Kylie turned toward Father Beechum again. By the way, Kylie said, I don’t believe I ever thanked you properly for your kindly words at Auntie Imogene’s funeral.

I was only too happy to oblige you. She was such a delightful lady, Beechum said kindly. She would have been so happy for you.

This is a real sight, Robert declared, And it blows. I’m gone. Everyone turned to Robert, who started to walk out of the church, only to stop and turn around. Hey Morgan, do us all a favor. Kill your wife tonight, while she’s sleeping. Christine covered her mouth in absolute horror. Patrick snickered, but Christine saw him, and he turned as red as a rose.

Oh my god, Anita gasped, What did you just say?

    Robert! Sarah gasped.

Why you li’l sod… Morgan snapped and started to walk toward Robert, but Kylie took Morgan by the arm gently, holding him back.

You don’t belong here, Patrick shouted at Robert, only slightly offended.

This is me wedding day, Morgan, Kylie said, And nothing burns an American worse than being ignored. Do not let him drive you off your trolley. I love you, and you love me, Kylie then looked at Robert again, with a strong tone of warning, And that is all that matters. Well, Kylie returned her position to the pulpit, where Beechum waited, uncertain what would happen next, We’re not getting younger, Father. Shall we begin?

Of course, Beechum readily replied, Kelly, have you ever performed a wedding ceremony before?

Never, Father, Kelly answered. Beechum stepped away from the pulpit and motioned for Kelly to take his place there.

As you will, apprentice Moriarty. This is your sister’s wedding, not mine.

Oh, Kelly, Kylie said with an excited smile.

Why would Kelly replace him, James asked to Sarah in a quiet whisper?

Because Kelly’s in the church seminary, and Beechum is training him for the priesthood, Sarah said, in an equally soft whisper, So he wants to watch Kelly perform a wedding to see if he does it correctly.

Realizing, at last, that he was beaten, Robert stormed out of the church at last, glad to be leaving this ridiculous farce.

How, Robert demanded to himself, Could my mom let Kylie talk her into packing up everything we had and moving here? I liked my life in Shandigore, and I still don’t see what was wrong there. Does mom really think we could get away from the superheroes by hanging around with Kylie? I’m a superhero, too, and so is Sarah, so she’ll never be free of them. Maybe, when Kylie’s married, Robert started to walk around, in the hall of the church, pacing back and forth, Mom will wise up and go home. Oh, no she won’t. Sarah loves it here. Leave it to Sarah to find a theatre group, so now we’re stuck here. Shit! Robert pounded the wall in frustration, and he dejectedly just stood there, breathing. Isn’t there some way of getting back… home? Robert hurriedly reached into his pocket and removed a piece of paper. No, he started to put the paper away, I musn’t do that. But as his fingers reached the pocket’s fabric, Robert then again put the paper in reading distance. Yes, yes I must. This farce must be stopped and mom must be brought back to reality. There is no other way. And with that, Robert uncrumpled the paper.

I now pronounce you man and wife, Kelly declared graciously, You may now kiss the bride.

I love you, Kylie, Morgan whispered to Kylie, his tongue just barely touching the flesh of her ear.

And I love you, Morgan, she replied with a quiet whisper. Kylie allowed Morgan to reach his arm out and wrap that arm around her neck, and he pulled her toward him suavely. After that, they shared a deep and passionate kiss. From the instant that Morgan kissed her, Kylie’s every sensory organ was provoked into a passionate overdrive, in a manner of which she had only partial control. For her, vision was impossible, and hearing was equally neutralized, but taste and touch were empowered beyond anything Kylie had ever felt before. The cinnamon on Morgan’s breath, and the sweetness of his lips, drove Kylie into an automated function. She placed her hands on his back and could not help but to rub him back and forth, to which Morgan replied by elongating the kiss even further.

Ooh, Sarah teased, to which Anita thumped her in the shoulder with her fingers.

    Don’t start, Anita warned.

Save it for the honeymoon, tiger, James insisted with a jesting tone. Kelly merely averted his eyes, preferring instead to watch Beechum for further instruction. Beechum, of course, just waited for the bride and groom to complete this elongated kiss. With Beechum doing nothing, Kelly just looked around the room, as watching heterosexuals showing their affections in public had always bored him, and left him with a minor sense of injustice.

Why are you allowed to touch the man that you desire, sister, Kelly thought, But I am not? Oh well, this is your wedding. God, help me purge meself of such lustful thoughts that bring you no dignity. Breaking free of his thought, Kelly’s eyes wandered along the floor, up through the entire church, only to stop. He could feel a dark presence here. Quite unexpectedly, Kylie broke her kiss from Morgan at last, and she gave Kelly a knowing gaze.

Do you feel that? Kylie asked her brother, nervously.

It is just wedding nerves, but it’s all okay now, Morgan reassured her.

No, Kylie explained, This is something else.

Quite, Kelly agreed. Old Nick is here.

Worse, Kylie said, as Sarah, Anita, James, Morgan, Christine, Patrick, and Beechum started to watch her, Sheridan, I suspect.

Sheridan, Sarah gasped. Are you sure?

Sarah, please take me husband and the civilians to safety, then come back to me, Kylie insisted.

You got it, Sarah complied at once, and she started to lead Christine, Patrick, Anita, Beechum, and James out of the room by touching their arms as she passed them.

She’s me wife, and I won’t leave her! Morgan insisted, breaking away from Sarah’s gentle touch. Whatever this is, darling, we’ll face it together.

You can’t help us, Kylie told Morgan. Only I can face him, so please, go with Sarah.

Come on, Patrick agreed, trying to pull Morgan out by the arm, Let her go!

No! Morgan demanded. We just got married, and that means we have our lives together and we share everything and that means the danger. I’m staying.

Suit yourself, Sarah turned away from Morgan, Will you all come with me, please? Anita, James, and Beechum readily, but nervously, followed Sarah outside of the chapel. When Sarah got to the door of the chapel, she was knocked down by a rushing, instantaneous wind with incredible power. She tumbled over a pew, and she could not see anything, but Anita, James, and Beechum could. Three characters walked into the chapel from out of nowhere, just as though they had walked in from another dimension. The first was a man with deep charisma protruding from him like an aura. Cold blue eyes, black beard, stunning velvet purple cape, knee-high black leather boots, and a black leather suit. At the moment they saw him, Christine and Patrick lost all sense of dignity and fled right out of the church.

Matthew Sheridan, gasped Anita, who covered her mouth. What do you want here? Haven’t we suffered enough at your bloody hands?

Anita, Sheridan replied suavely, I don’t believe you’ve ever met my hierophant, Takurem. Following him came a very ancient man, with old, ragged grey robes and a hideous beard, with an old, gnarled walking staff. Introduce yourself, priest. This is Tristan’s ex-wife. Obeying Sheridan’s command, Takurem looked Anita over with a disapproving scowl.

I can see why he divorced you, Takurem informed her. Anita spit at him, which landed on his cheek. A flash of anger flowed through his eyes, and Takurem raised his hand to curse her, but Sheridan grabbed the priest’s arm.

Leave her be, Takurem! Sheridan ordered. We came here in peace, remember? Andy! Entering next after them was a teenage boy, wearing black and silver armor and a pair of brown boots with a silver cape. There was a dragon etched onto his armor, and his brown hair was cut short, trim and neat like a military cut. At his side was a sword, which he drew as he saw Kylie.

Wow, Andy laughed when he saw Kylie, You’re actually beautiful today. Lithium?

Don’t speak so badly of me wife, Morgan ordered. Who are all these people, Kylie?

The wizard I spoke of, Kylie explained calmly, And his assistants. What do we owe the, uh, pleasure, of your visit, King Sheridan? Kylie bowed her head and smiled at him, trying to be polite, which Sheridan noticed and appreciated. He returned her bow with one of his own.

You summoned us here, Sheridan answered her quietly. Who else has the power to open the gates? I couldn’t do it.

I assure you, Kylie started to walk toward Sheridan, very slowly, but very protectively, That neither Kelly nor I opened the gates for you. Granted I’d rather see you here than the American warriors, but your deal with Robert to slaughter me in return for his powers being restored rather inclined me to withdraw your name from the guest list.

Yet he failed, Sheridan said, As I knew he would. You are the greatest witch I’ve met, and with the right training, you would be a goddess.

There is only one god, Kelly snapped, shaking his finger. Kylie turned to Kelly with a disgusted glare, so Kelly returned his gaze to Sheridan, Well, all right, a father and a mother, but Kylie is not that stupid. We’re not a lot of those crystal-trippers, I’ll have you know! Respect the house of god, or you’ll have far worse than us to fear!

Stop making speeches! Andy shouted. Didn’t I kill you?

Oh, you tried, Sheridan laughed, But his mother didn’t let you. Anyway, we didn’t come here to pick a fight, my dear. Instead, we’ve brought another visitor.

Who else could you bring? Anita moaned.

Hello, my love, declared Scott. He walked into the room wearing black leather boots, a beautiful purple robe and a pair of black pants, with a gold crown studded with amethysts. In Scott’s right hand was a scepter. He folded his hands and bowed before Kylie, who walked up to Scott, but she stopped at two feet away, and held her distance there.

You come to me now, Kylie asked, And assume it was by my invitation? Any other day, Scott, I’d be pleased to see you again, but today was the wrong…

I am here to stop you from making a mistake, Scott said hurriedly, You belong to me! He reached for Kylie, but she stepped away, avoiding his hand. You’re my perfect woman, my fantasy, the woman Sakurani herself prophesied to be my wife.

You’re too late, Kylie coldly refuted, and she backed away from Scott slowly, retaining her dignity. I am married now, as of about ten minutes. Morgan ran over to Kylie, who slowly meandered to him as well. They touched each other’s hands, then held each other, arm in arm. Do not ask me to forsake the man I love.

But that is all I ask of you, Scott beseeched. He fell down on his knees and threw the crown down to the floor. Caught off his guard, Sheridan raised his eyebrows. All the power, all the royalty, Scott begged, I’d give it all up. Come with me, Kylie, please, I need you. Scott looked up at Kylie, and his eyes started to tear. Anita and Sheridan both walked over to Scott, but neither touched him because of the presence of the other. Sarah took her chance, unobserved, to slink off through the door.

No, Scott, Kylie explained. I will not make the mistake your mother, Eleanore, made, getting into multiple marriages with men who could only betray me later, just for the power the marriage grants. I choose an ordinary life.

Refuse me? Scott gasped, and he tried to speak again, but his words choked on his own tears. Unable to even say a word, Scott fell entirely down to the floor, weeping uncontrollably.

Son, Sheridan asked, and he took his son’s hand, but Scott pulled it away. Kylie, I… apologize, Sheridan sighed.

Enough! Shouted a strong, African-American female voice from the top of nearest statue. Everyone looked up, and there, standing in midair, hands on her hips floated the superheroine Eagle. Sheridan, didn’t you ever read Emily Post? Crashing a wedding is very bad manners. Especially when the bride wants you out of her life.

Mind your manners, imbecile, Takurem screamed. This is the High King Sheridan, and his son, the Prince of Flourae. They take what they want, and doom, the evil hierophant’s staff glowed red very quickly, To all who interfere.

Right, Scott agreed, and he hastily stood back on his feet. Kylie, you’re coming with me. There will be no negotiation, do you hear me, witch? Either have your marriage annulled, right here and now, or else you’ll force me to do something I really do want to do! Spinning around gracefully, and with blinding speed, Scott threw a blast of power at Eagle, who had no time to avoid the energy. Scott’s cold power struck her, and instantly froze Eagle solid, which stripped her of the ability to move. It also stripped from her the ability to maintain her levitation. Naturally, the frozen Eagle fell like a brick.

No! Anita screamed in horror, realizing what would happen to her daughter when her frozen body hit the floor.

Stay where you are, Kylie commanded. She pointed her hand at Eagle, who stopped falling and remained right in place a mere foot above the floor. Scott took the opportunity while Kylie was busy. He ran right past her, heading straight for Morgan. Morgan saw him coming and tried to punch him, but Scott had foreseen that. Countering the punch, Scott breathed on the floor, which created a slick patch of ice right where Morgan was standing. When Morgan moved to punch Scott’s face, his feet betrayed him and he slid right into the waiting arms of Scott. Kelly stood there, not certain what to do.

Huh? Morgan asked. Let go of me!

Oh Kylie, Scott called out. Kylie waved her fingers, which caused Eagle to fall again, but very, very slowly, so that she would be unharmed when she landed on the ground. Certain that her friend would be safe, Kylie then put Morgan and Scott into her line of sight.

Oh, Kylie gasped, suddenly filled with a sense of checkmate.

So, Scott said to her, Either way, I win. Do you end your days with me, or do you send him to his grave? In Scott’s free hand, as he held Morgan by the throat and an icy grip, formed a knife composed of pure ice. I won’t wait forever.

Yes, Sheridan gasped, "Make your choice.

I beg you, Kelly pleaded, Take me instead, wizard. You offered to teach me your black arts before. Let me sister and her husband have their happiness. Please?

No! Scott screamed. Kylie’s who we came for, and we won’t go until she agrees to come with us.

Kylie, I love you, Morgan told her, Do you love me?

With all my soul, Kylie said to Morgan. So it appears I have no choice, Kylie blinked her eyes. Release me husband, Scott, and I will go with you. But, I will not be your lover. The magic is all I care about.

What about the prophecy, Scott insisted. He slowly brought the ice knife close to Morgan’s throat. Morgan saw this, and his started to sweat.

    Kylie, help me, Morgan begged.

Sheridan, Anita turned to Sheridan, You alone have the power to end this. Don’t let him separate them, please. We’ll do anything you ask.

No, Kylie closed her eyes and took a deep, nervous breath. Scott, I agree to your terms. Let me husband go free, and I will join you in Flourae.

At last, Scott exclaimed as he pulled the knife away from Morgan’s throat and released Morgan from his hold. Morgan looked at Kylie, and he turned his face away, feeling heavily betrayed.

Hold it, Kylie commanded. You get nothing without granting me one boon in return, and the boon I demand is simple. I shall join you in Flourae, Scott, but so shall me husband, Morgan. Nothing will disrupt me marriage, so you either bring us both, or you shall have none. And that, Kylie insisted with a strong tone of authority, Is the way it’s going to be. At that point, Sheridan took Kylie by the hand.

I agree to your condition, Kylie, Sheridan commanded. Bring her husband, Scott, and do him no harm. We need her, both of us, but how can we expect her to aid our cause if we offer her only a reason to destroy us? Immediately after that, a scarlet portal appeared in the doorway of the chapel. Takurem walked to the portal, as did Andy, but each of them merely waited on one side of it, as if they were ensuring its safety for the royal family. Sheridan and Kylie walked toward the portal, hand in hand, but Kylie stopped.

Kelly, she said to her brother, Know that I love you. I do this only to protect England, and Morgan.

I know, Kelly said, Though I don’t agree, I do accept.

Thank you, Kylie breathed. That is important to me. Farewell.

May your journey be free of incident, Kelly replied.

Kylie, Anita asked, Is there no other way? Kylie just shook her head, and sighed.

Tell Sarah goodbye, please, Kylie requested. Let’s go now, wizard, before I lose my nerve. Wordlessly, Sheridan and Kylie walked together into the portal.

What, Robert asked himself as he saw Kylie vanish into the portal, for he still remained in the hall of the church, having never returned to the chapel from his exile, No death? No grief, no suffering? That’s not justice, Kylie. You’ve made me suffer, so now you’re going to! But how? Scott walked with Morgan, though neither of them spoke, toward the portal. Instead, quietly, Scott and Morgan accepted each other’s presence.

She clearly loves you, Scott said to Morgan, But I’ll fix that.

Don’t bet on it, mate, Morgan rebuked. He went toward the portal, allowing Scott to fall behind. Mind your place, and I’ll mind mine.

Agreed, Scott said, though he suddenly walked back away from the portal, strangely terrified.

What? Morgan asked him. Only then did Morgan feel the force of a switchblade piece his heart. Uh!

Oh my god! Anita shrieked, raising her hands in pure panic.

Morgan, Kylie screamed, suddenly sensing her husband’s death, and she turned back from Sheridan. She ran toward the portal’s exit. From there, she saw Robert running out of the portal, back into the chapel, with a switchblade in his hands. Morgan, she screamed again, and she tried to get to him, but Scott wasted no time. He ran into the portal and shoved Kylie back inside of it. Andy and Takurem rushed inside as well. With their departure, the portal disappeared. Kelly, James, and Anita gathered around Morgan, but there was nothing they could do, because he was already dead by then.

Kelly, Beechum requested, Clear them off. I should perform the last rights.

Scott, Eagle shouted, as she broke free of the ice that froze her, shattering bits of ice everywhere. Good lord, Eagle ran to the group, only to see Morgan dead. Where’s Kylie?

She was kidnapped, by Sheridan, Kelly explained. Then Scott knifed Morgan in the ’eart after Kylie agreed to go with them so long as they let Morgan go, too.

Bastards, Eagle slammed her fist into the wall of the church, though nobody noticed. Don’t worry, Kylie, I’m going to get through that portal and rescue you, even if I have to do it on my own.

What did I miss? Robert asked as he walked in from the church’s restroom. He had conveniently flushed the switchblade down the loo, and he was grateful for his power over speed. For him, the whole thing of cleaning the blood off his hands, removing the weapon, and drying his hands took a mere second. Everyone looked at him with disgust.

Three hours later, Sarah stood outside of a house which was so familiar to her. She was wearing a blue shirt and a pair of blue jeans. Standing beside her was Robert, who was dressed in a maroon gym suit with a brown headband. Next to them was Kelly, who wore a violet suit with a bit of turquoise trimming. Anita was the last, wearing a yellow and brown African-style dress.

Are we ready to do this, Anita asked her. Once they’re back in our lives, we won’t be able to turn back.

Likely as not they won’t do it, Kelly snapped. I suggest we leave them out of it.

You know, he’s probably right, Robert moaned. But I really want to see them again.

So it’s decided, Sarah declared. We ask them to help us. Anita allowed the teens to fall back behind her, and she started to walk toward the door. Then, she took a breath, and rapped three times on the door. Sarah walked away a bit to the right, where she could see into the window. This place was decorated in lovely shades of tan and beige, a once beautiful home, once full of African artifacts and objects, but now mostly replaced by rustic decorations. There were many heads of animals that had been killed on hunts. The rest of the room, with delightful interior, was definitely the domain of a man who fancied himself as an outdoor sportsman, though a few of the more beautiful pieces had been allowed to remain. The living room was particularly full of these things, from the flag of Kenya hanging on the wall to the tiny wicker lion on a shelf with other objects. The carpet was done in bright colors, orange and yellow, and the couch was done in a nice, gentle peach. The living room was also as well organized as the ‘Vienna House’ was. There were some tan love seats as well.

Mark Frakes sat down on a couch of soft, gentle peach color, and allowed his body to sink into the soft cushions. He was dressed in a solid blue western shirt, with blue jeans and a pair of black boots, along with a belt that had the American flag on the buckle. His brown hair was tied back in a ponytail, and he had a fairly thick beard that was surprisingly well trimmed. He picked up a remote from the coffee table, made of oak and freshly polished, and turned on the large television in the corner of the room.

Ah, Mark said, There’s nothing like a break after a hard day’s work. Right, son? With a devious smile, he looked up to the other side of the room, where a teenage boy with short, brown hair, wearing a red and brown plaid western shirt, a pair of black jeans, a belt buckle with a cowboy on it, and a pair of brownish-red boots. He stood at an easel, a palette of colors in his hand, mixing a strange color.

Please turn that down, dad, he asked, I’m trying to paint.

Oh, back to painting, eh, Mark asked, Well, Stevie boy, let me have a look.

Help yourself, Steve countered, Just don’t break my concentration. Slightly taken aback, Mark stood up and slowly walked over to his son, who seemed to pay absolutely no attention to what his father was doing right now. Instead, Steve concentrated on his art. Mark watched him with relative alarm as the painting began to form, dark and chthonian. There, slowly, Steve applied a rather odd form of rusty orange to the canvas, creating weird, wavy lines that appeared to be like snakes, only they weren’t. They were hair. Steve added some white, and some soft yellow, to produce a peach color instead of rust, and he started to paint a face.

Aren’t you guys going to get that, demanded a teenage boy, younger than Steve, wearing a yellow polo shirt and a pair of blue jeans, with tennis shoes, as he came from the hallway. They’re driving me nuts. Steve and Mark stopped focusing on the painting, and both of them turned to the door. Only then did they realize that somebody was knocking.

Oh, Steve said sheepishly, and he walked over to the door. He opened it, and there, he saw Anita, Robert, Sarah, and Kelly. I’m sorry, Steve smiled, I didn’t hear you at all.

Yes, Mark admitted, Shawn was watching television too loudly for Steve’s concentration. Turn it off, Shawn.

But, Shawn protested. Mark’s eyes looked at the boy in a death glare. Sorry, Uncle Mark, Shawn sighed, and he went to the remote.

We’re being lousy hosts, Steve said courteously, Please come inside.

Thank you, Anita said, and she walked in with the other three close behind her. Each of the four looked around their new surroundings rather curiously. I love what you’ve done to my home, Mark, Anita said, All your hunting décor actually goes well with my Kenya decor.

Well, Mark said, I thought it would, too. Steve’s got a good eye for decorating. Maybe you should look into that, Steve?

Dad, Steve insisted, I told you, I’m a painter. Decorating is for gay guys.

    Hey, Robert snarled.

Don’t be so hostile, Kelly snarled. Both looked at Steve with light disgust.

Oh right, Steve laughed nervously, I forgot. You’re both gay. Please forgive me, guys, he offered his hands to both of the two guys to shake, I didn’t mean to insult you.

Oh, Kelly said, and turned away from Steve.

Apology accepted, Robert said with a smile, and he clasped Steve’s hand immediately.

So what brings you guys back here to Shandigore, Shawn asked. We’re so glad to see you, but it’s pretty strange.

He’s right, Mark agreed, When we last spoke, Anita, you said you’d moved over to London. And that you were going to stay there.

I am, Anita said. Please close the door, Sarah.

Okay, Sarah said, and she closed the front door. Would you like me to do this, mom?

Yes, Anita moaned, I really would.

Whatever, Sarah mused. Anita sat down on one of the wicker chairs while Sarah walked over to Mark until they were face to face. We’re not here just for a visit.

My, Kelly started to admire Steve’s painting. What a smashing portrait of me sister, Steve. She said you had talent, but I never believed her.

What, Steve asked. He walked over to the picture, but he did not see it. All he saw was lines of darkness and mist, with weird rusty snakes and a few lines of misty peach. I really just don’t see it.

But you’ve got her quite easily, Kelly said. That’s her hair, he started to trace one of the snake lines, What else could you be painting?

I do not love your freaky sister, Steve insisted. He shook his head no. By the way, where is she? Didn’t she come with you?

Well, er, Kelly stammered, That is the problem, by Jove. She’s not with us.

You mean, announced a young woman in a stunning red dress, glittering with the light, with long hair dyed into a beautiful soft blonde, as she walked into the house, wearing a pair of expensive Rosada red shoes. On her fingers are three diamond rings. She’s married now, right? That’s what you guys said. Such a shame she said I wasn’t invited, because I’d really love to meet the fool who’d fall in love with her.

Brenda Blaire, Kelly snapped, Do not besmirch me sister any longer, unless you’d like to go bald early.

Calm down, Steve said, and he walked between them, It’s okay, Kelly. Brenda’s the one who gave us the money to buy Anita’s house.

And that money, Anita added, Combined with the insurance money from the ‘Vienna House,’ when Sheridan destroyed it, was what allowed us all to move to London and buy the pub. Like it or not, we’re all connected. Brenda’s just as much a part of this mess as any of us.

We’re not part of anything, Brenda demanded. She turned to Steve and started to rub her fingers through his hair. Look at you! You’re not dressed, she said seductively, And you’ve forgotten about our date. Just like a man, huh, Sarah?

I don’t know, Sarah laughed, Once you’ve had an Englishman, Brenda, you’ll never go back.

We have to hurry, Brenda insisted, The chauffer is waiting outside. Hurry up and get dressed correctly, because I’m starving.

Well, Steve suggested, I do have guests.

They’re nothings, Brenda rebutted, to which everyone looked at her in outrage. That wasn’t what I meant, you guys, but it’s not like you’ve got Donald Trump in the house.

Hold it, Kelly shouted, Everyone sit down and shut up before I go off the trolley. He looked at everyone in the eye, rounding the room by turning his neck, until he had everybody’s undivided attention. There now, that’s better. Kylie is absent because Scott and Sheridan appeared at the wedding with Andy and an old chap I’ve never seen before.

Oh my god, Mark gasped, They crashed the wedding? Javexus wouldn’t allow that, never.

So, Steve started to sit down on the nearest chair, slowly, shocked as everyone else. Start from the beginning, Kelly, what happened?

Kylie and Morgan had just been married. Father Beechum was training me in how to perform a wedding that day, you see, and their marriage plans coincided, so, it was felt best. But after the marriage was final and decided, the void opens up. Scott and company pop out, like the dregs of the earth they are, and… oh God, Kelly started to tear up, I can’t go on. He hid his face in his hands.

Scott held Morgan hostage, Anita completed, while Sarah walked over to Kelly and put her hand on his shoulder. Kylie tricked Scott, but agreed to go to Flourae with him, but she demanded Morgan be allowed to go with her. Sheridan agreed to this.

Was that treason, Shawn asked. Did she betray us?

No, Sarah replied, I think she knew if she went to Flourae, Sheridan would leave Earth alone. She sacrificed herself to stop the killing.

That’s not even the worst of it, Kelly lamented.

That’s not bad at all, Brenda laughed, Kylie’s gone, hopefully for good. Don’t you see, this solves everything!

Not everything, Sarah countered. Morgan was murdered before Kylie could save him, but we didn’t see who killed him. That’s why we came here, to ask you to help us rescue her and end this nonsense once and for all.

How, Mark asked. Javexus did not come to you, did he? If he didn’t, then we can’t get into Flourae in the first place.

Actually, Robert said, I found this spell in Kylie’s room, he removed the paper, his most carefully guarded secret. I don’t know precisely what it does.

Let me see, Kelly snatched the paper. He looked it over with considerable surprise. This scroll is a spell that forced the portal to open, without the intervention of a gatekeeper.

So she did it herself, Robert said. She brought this on herself. It has to be.

Self-inflicted or not, Steve argued, We have to save her. Don’t forget, she’s what Sheridan wants because of her power. The Knights of Callistor, if you’ve told me right, dad, are to this day trying to protect Callistor. With Kylie as a weapon, Sheridan is invincible. We have to talk her back to reality. Get her to forsake Sheridan forever.

Yes, Anita agreed, But I still don’t believe she’d bring Sheridan back herself. My money’s on Scott, if you ask me.

I agree, Sarah said, Scott is pretty infatuated with her, and has been for two years. She refused him in favor of Morgan, and she was so happy, I wish she’d let you come so you could see her. Scott probably killed Morgan because he wants her for himself.

Then the obligation is clear, Mark said, We have to find out what Sheridan wants.

Do what you want, Shawn screamed, But I won’t. I’m not interested in helping Kylie, or going anywhere near that wizard again. I’m staying. Mark gave Shawn a scowling look, with a raised eyebrow, but Shawn just turned away.

Steve, Brenda clutched Steve’s shoulder, Please say you’ll refuse. I don’t want to lose you, Steve.

But Brenda, Steve snapped, Sheridan is too dangerous. If he gets Callistor, then nobody is safe. We have to prevent him from getting it now.

Steve, Brenda said, with an aphrodisiac tone, I know that, but I just don’t want you go to there, that’s all.

I have to, Brenda, Steve barked. Nobody else has the power, except for us.

Robert and I are going, Sarah cajoled,

What! Robert screamed, but Sarah ignored him.

But we need more help. Alone, we were beaten, Sarah implored. We won’t be strong enough if we have to fight him alone.

They’re right, Steve, Mark instructed. I order you go, Steve. Kylie must either be turned back to our side, or else destroyed, but Sheridan cannot be allowed to claim Callistor. The natural magic of that country, if he wins it, will make him more powerful than any god ever dreamed up. I send you, Steve, because I am too old to go myself now.

You’re the same age as Sheridan, Sarah argued. More or less.

True, Mark said, and he turned around to look at Sarah, It’s just that Sheridan killed me once, and I don’t have the power to stand against him again. Furthermore, if you kids fail, then my remaining here still leaves Earth protected. You are a capable warrior, Steve. I’m holding you back right now, because you need to be independent. We can’t all go, and leave Earth defenseless.

Steve’s not going, either! Brenda screamed. He’s not! He’s not, I won’t let him.

Brenda, Steve held Brenda in his arms softly, I have to, baby, there isn’t a choice.

Then I’m going, too, Brenda demanded. Don’t you tell me, she started to shake her finger, That it’s too dangerous, because you’re my superhero. You’re there to protect me.

He’s right, Brenda, Mark explained, Leave him to his quest. There is no guarantee of your safety, nor your survival. This is not a game, and it is not a quest for aristocrats on a lark.

Sheridan’s dangerous to all of us, Brenda countered. His brats kidnapped me, remember, just to lead my Stevie into a death trap. They killed you, didn’t they, Mr. Frakes? I say we get revenge!

Revenge, Robert scoffed. What revenge? We shouldn’t do this. The second we see that old wizard again, he’ll destroy us with a flash of his fingers.

Yeah, Shawn shouted, Why should we fight that wizard again, just for Kylie?

If that was his intention, Kelly insisted, You would be dead this very day. No, there is a darker desire in his pursuits, and it must be nipped in the bud now, while there is still time.

We were made to be superheroes, Steve insisted, Born with those powers, and it wasn’t by mere chance. This is the will of fate. Somehow, some way, I believe that the forces of goodness, whatever they may be, insisted that we stand against Sheridan and his evil sorceries. I’m going to fight. Otherwise, our powers are futile and we are wastes of life.

I would join you, if I dared, Anita suggested, But as I am not a warrior, or a heroine…

This is not your fight, Anita, Mark declared. Steve is right, though it is with the deepest of regret that I cannot join you. Mark touched Steve’s shoulder and held him tightly, to which Steve looked up at him. I am so proud of you.

Really, I don’t want to leave my world, Sarah said with a sigh, But I just have this horrible feeling that if Sheridan isn’t stopped, my world becomes his world. I won’t stand for that.

Nor shall I, Kelly agreed. I am going to fight. Do you blokes realize what will happen if Kylie joins Sheridan? Well, they won’t hurt me, ’cause I’m her brother. They won’t hurt Britain, because Kylie would never allow it. They probably won’t hurt Sarah or Anita because they’re her best mates, always ’ave been. But the rest of you, he eyed the group warningly, Better start worrying.

Bon voyage, Shawn snapped. It’s your funerals. Personally, I’m going to stay here on Earth, where I can make a difference.

Then I’ll be sure to bring you back some new clothes, Brenda countered. You really need them. Shawn glared at Brenda, who just turned her back on him and lifted her nose high into the air. Robert rolled his eyes up.

Shawn, Mark walked right over to Shawn, and he got right up into the boy’s face. He raised a pointed finger to Shawn’s face, leaving the boy with a mortified look. You are going along in this quest, boy! You have as much duty to prevent Sheridan and Kylie from forming a deadly alliance as Steve and the others do! If they combine their powers, Sheridan’s armies would be unstoppable, and not even we could do anything about it. Is that what you want?

    No, Shawn gasped.

Then shut your mouth and do your duty, like a knight, like a man, like a hero, Sarah agreed. Helplessly, Shawn took a gulp, then looked at Sarah with daggers in his eyes. Mark walked back over toward Steve, while Sarah turned to look at Kelly.

So, Robert moaned, It’s Steve, Shawn, Sarah, Kelly, Brenda, and me. Great. We’re a regular army, aren’t we? Sheridan will eat us for breakfast.

No worries, lad, Kelly smiled, leaving Robert’s jaw to drop from pure shock, Pain is something I’ve learned to enjoy. Robert shook his head, then looked over to Sarah.

Are we ready to go? Steve asked to the group as Sarah and Brenda gathered around. Sarah nodded her head, while Brenda just smiled. Robert tapped his foot. Right. Said Steve, who then turned to Kelly. So be it, wizard, cast your spell.

Don’t worry, luvs, Kelly interjected as he began to read the paper of the spell, We’ll be back quite soon. I promise you, Anita, Mr. Frakes, that we will return.

I’m counting on it, Mark said. Move out!

Pelux, vedrikal, lethuma kedrosh zeppion! Screamed Kelly, his left hand high in the air while his right hand held the scroll which he read from, Open up the portal and let us pass, without the need for Javexus. Instantly, a tiny shower of violet sparks emerged from the scroll, which spun around in the air. Quickly, spinning faster and faster and ever faster still, around everyone in the room, while all eyes merely watched, at last, the sparks united together into a single unit. Once they were united, the energy mass expanded and grew, until it was large enough to be a doorway.

    This is it, Sarah breathed.

Go! Mark screamed, and he pointed at the portal.

Wish us luck, Steve said, and he dived into the portal.

Goodbye, mom, Sarah said softly, We’ll come back.

No, we won’t, Shawn moaned, We’re all going to die in there.

Come on, Sarah said, and she gently took Shawn’s hand. With that, she followed Steve into the portal, dragging Shawn along with her. After that, Brenda walked up to the portal, only to stop right in front of it.

Now that I’m here, she said, I’m too afraid.

It’s all right, Kelly said to her reassuringly, as he placed his hands in front of her. Take me hands, and we’ll go together. Hurry up now, and before Brenda could object, he placed his hands upon Brenda’s own hands. However, when he did that, he let go of the scroll, which fell to the floor at his feet. He did not notice, but softly yet firmly, he walked with Brenda into the portal. Robert stood there at the portal, and he looked at the strange purple thing. That was when he noticed that it was shrinking, starting to get smaller and smaller.

Looks like this lets me off the hook, he said, and he picked up the scroll. Suddenly, Robert felt a light electrical shock strike his back, but it did not harm him very much. Instead, it sent him flying
