    CHAPTER ONE

THE LAST THING I remembered was Kyra screaming my name.

    Will!

    Then everything went black.

A burning warmth flowed through my body as a hand gripped my wrist. I knew this feeling, I’d felt it before when training with Kellan. It was his ability to phase through solid objects and he could extend it to other people.

I couldn’t see anything, but Kellan’s hand pulled me forward. He must have known the way out. I followed through the darkness until I saw the outline of a forest. We must have been at the back end of the warehouse.

I had come on a rescue mission with Kyra and our friends to free the captured Djinn and Kyra’s father, Malcolm. Things had gone wrong when the Blooder we trusted turned on us.

    Alec … I murmured.

If I ever saw that backstabbing Blooder, I’d kill him.

Well, that was close, said the person pulling me along.

Immediately I realised that it wasn’t Kellan’s voice and I yanked my hand free. The warm feeling vanished and I felt my body return to its solid state.

At the same moment Alec’s skinny frame and wicked smile appeared before me. His raven hair fell over his eyes, hiding his red irises, but not covering the purple bruises painted down his cheek where I’d punched him.

You and I would have been crushed if it wasn’t for that Guardjinn’s ability, he said with an all-too-pleased grin, flicking his hair back. Lucky I stabbed him, or I wouldn’t have had his blood to use.

I had forgotten Kellan had been stabbed. The thought of another friend being killed before my eyes had flown me into a fury and I’d launched myself at Alec.

Where was Kellan? Where was Kyra? Where was everyone who had come with us on our unsanctioned mission to save the stolen Djinn from the draining facility?

Our fight with the Blooders had left the warehouse in ruins. Metal and brick lying in a disarrayed heap, as large bent beams stuck out of the mess at odd angles like a dead spider.

I gazed out over the destruction, but couldn’t see any bodies or blood. Nothing but the uncertain chirp of crickets met my ears.

Looking for someone? Alec asked, licking more of Kellan’s blood off my knife.

I grit my teeth and dug my fingers into the earth.

They’re not here. Alec took a seat on a chunk of debris and dusted himself off. Unfortunately, they got away. My father will not be happy.

How do you know? I asked, still scanning the horizon.

Little birdies whisper in my ear, he replied, but I had no idea what he meant by it. I didn’t really put much stock in anything that come out of Alec’s mouth.

Still, Alec had no reason to lie about their safety. My chest relaxed a little. Kyra and Mia were safe, they got away, but if they left without me then either things were too dangerous to stay or … they thought I was dead. I glanced at the destroyed warehouse. The whole thing had come down on us. Kyra had seen it, she was there. I had to get back to her and let her know I was alright.

I jumped to my feet and started running around the outskirts of the warehouse; vaulting over a crumbling brick wall and slipping between two metal beams.

Really? Alec called as I strained whatever strength I had left.

With my ability turned off I was able to feel all my muscles burning and grating against one another. It was painful and I felt like I might just break, but I didn’t turn my sense of feeling off. I had made a promise to myself the day I decided to stand by Kyra. I wouldn’t stop feeling whether it was love or pain.

Not being able to feel didn’t make me a better Guardjinn and definitely didn’t make me a better person. My friends fought with everything they had no matter the pain and I wanted to be like that. I had decided not feeling was a curse and I wouldn’t use it again.

I pushed through the pain in my limbs and ran through the small gap between the electric fence and the ruined warehouse. A large metal sheet was lying at an angle on top of the fence, generating an electric current that made my hair stand on end as I passed through.

I lost sight of Alec and the entrance to the facility came into view. The gate was open and tyre tracks from our truck were moving away from the site. There were no other vehicles in the vicinity and I wondered what my next move would be.

Where are you going to go? Alec appeared behind me, taking a leisurely stroll through a metal pole with his stolen phasing ability.
