Evil Charm - Jennifer Lee Scott
The finest young men and women had gathered together beneath the opulent roof of the castle. In the ballroom, they were gliding across the floor in perfect rhythm with the musicians that came from all over the kingdom and even beyond its reaches. It was a time of great abundance and general happiness. The elegantly dressed aristocracy was celebrating the birthday of Aron, the King's second son. For once there was peace in the kingdom, and even the poorest peasant had a full belly because of the generous crop that had been harvested.
It was a wonderful time to be a member of the royal family, which was quite large. The king and queen had six handsome sons, each only a year or two apart. There was no question that their bloodline would be sustained. All six sons were dancing with the young woman of their choice as the other privileged members of the kingdom looked on.
The sweet melody of the musicians swelled and raised to the high ceiling of the ballroom as the night wore on. Delicious food and rich wine, ushered in by the servants of the castle, kept flowing. Every person present seemed to be reveling in the pleasure of the evening.
Except perhaps for one woman that was to be expected. She collected shadows wherever she went and managed to turn even the well-lit corner into a dark place. In one of these dark corners was where she sat, a glass of wine barely drunk set to the table before her. At her side stood a muscular man with olive skin and a shaved head. His thick arms were wrapped with metal that ran from just beneath his elbows to the curve of his wrists. The arm bands were a form of weaponry when he was engaged in a fight, but they were also a symbol of possession. The woman he stood rigidly beside claimed ownership over him. Because of his presence and her demeanor of absolute authority, she had not been denied entrance to the castle. It had been many years since she last surfaced in the kingdom and no one recognized her for who she truly was. None had any idea that they should be thanking her for the fruitful season they had had, or the general peace and contentment that had fallen over the kingdom.
The woman thought of none of this as she watched the dancers. Instead, she studied one dancer in particular - the king's fourth son who had a reputation in the kingdom for his lecherous behavior.
His long dark brown hair was tied back with a dark purple ribbon and his pale skin was glimmering with a sheen of sweat from dancing for so long. He had not danced with the same young woman once, and in fact, as the music began to cut into something more subtle and romantic he released the girl he was dancing with and headed for a glass of wine instead. He had no true responsibility to the kingdom as he had three brothers before him. Though his two younger brothers were trained to be warriors in the kingdom's army, this particular son had no desire to be part of the battle. He called himself a lover, much to the king's displeasure. The queen fawned over him the most. She praised him as a poet and an artist. In truth, he was a spoiled young man who was savoring every luxury his family line offered.
He had no idea as he gulped down his glass of wine that a pair
