    Patience: Having Its Perfect Work

The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.

    Fabienne Fredrickson

Patience. The mere sound of it is enough to make me groan. I'm not talking about the patience you need to wait for the restaurant hostess to call your party's name or for the bus that was due to arrive five minutes ago (NYC problems).

I'm talking about the patience it takes to stay planted and focused on God when you're believing for something in faith—be it a child, spouse, promotion, etc. For me, it was a job offer in NYC.

When I first moved from California to search for jobs in NYC, it was an adventure: arriving at the airport with two suitcases and a dream, casually crashing random networking events, etc. But as the days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, the adventure began to lose its novelty, and the doubt started to seep in: God, are you still there? It's me Grace—the one who's still unemployed! I stepped out in faith during this move—did I get it wrong? Where is the God that moves mountains? I know you can move faster than this!

Sound familiar? If you find yourself in a spot where your faith is becoming fickle and you're just about ready to give up on what you're believing for—flip the switch:

    Abide in Him.

Abide (v): to bear patiently, to endure without yielding. When you're getting impatient and feeling vulnerable, it's easy to turn to the world's ways, get distracted, or try to take matters into your own hands. It's a choice to trust God's ways even when it makes no sense. It's a choice to stay planted when all you want to do is uproot yourself. It's a choice to heed God's word and not your frustrated thoughts. Choosing to abide in God by prioritizing time with Him enables you to

Discern His voice and His ways over the world's ways (John 10:27–28)

Stand firm against the enemy who does not want to see you win (Ephesians 6:13)

You'll find that when you do choose to abide in Him, He never fails to reward that obedience by showing up and being everything you need Him to be exactly when you need it.

God is with you, and He draws near to those who draw near to Him. (James 4:8)

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:4–7)

    Make worship your weapon.

You can give thanks in all circumstances because you know that:

The victory is already yours (1 Corinthians 15:57)

God will always protect you, and He will never ever let you be put to shame (Romans 8:28)

He is your Good Shepherd—He works everything out for good (Psalm 23)

God always has and always will meet your every need (Philippians 4:19)

You can never stray too far or escape from God's love for you (Psalm 139:7–12)

I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace. I will boast of all his kindness to me. Let all who are discouraged take heart. (Psalm 34:1–3)

    Look toward eternity.

This season of patience and humility is woven into the fabric of God's plan for your life. If you try to bypass it or cut it short, God will still turn it for good, but it won't come out as magnificent. Praise Him that He pours out His Spirit which enables us to uproot our pride and ego in exchange for hearts that live to serve Him alone. Don't
