    Haunting Hedonists - Ophelia May

    Chapter 1––––––––

Roni Gardner sat in the reading room of the National Library and squealed with delight. The sound echoed around the grand bookcases, beneath the airy high ceiling, earning Roni several savage looks and a withering Shush!

She’d made her way into a secluded corner to research historical sexual practices (reflecting the fact that she had recently developed more than a passing interest in the subject). Roni had been reading about those buttoned-up, repressed Victorians and their thrilling dirty secrets.

It always delighted Roni to learn that such outwardly respectable and conservative people had such wildly debauched private lives. We’re all just a couple of layers of cotton away from being naked, she thought, glancing around at the other library-users.

Then Roni came upon a passing mention of ‘spectrophilia’. Curiosity piqued, she looked the word up on her phone and that was when she let out the squeal of surprise:

Spectrophilia [spek-truh-fil-ee-uh] - Noun - A sexual attraction towards supernatural entities.

Etymology: From the Latin words ‘spectrum’ meaning ‘apparition’ and ‘philia’ meaning ‘love’.

Roni felt a rushing wave of excitement wash over her. Finally, there was a name for the feelings she had been experiencing. It was real. It had a name! She couldn't contain her enthusiasm.

As she quickly gathered her things, she couldn’t help muttering Ohmygod, ohmygod, to herself, earning yet more silent scorn from the other readers. Eager to share her discovery with Beth, Roni ran out of the library and into the warm afternoon sun.

Less than half an hour later, she arrived at their apartment, still buzzing with excitement. She burst through the door, eager to share her discovery. Babe, you won't believe it, she called out, as she stepped out of her shoes and threw off her coat.

Beth was standing by the dining table, she whipped around suddenly, keeping her hands behind her back and plastering-on a smile that didn’t do anything but make her look guilty.

Fortunately, Roni was in full flight, so didn’t notice: It’s called Spectrophilia! she exclaimed, practically shouting. It's a thing! There’s a scientific name for it and it’s real!

    What is?

Roni threw her arms around Beth and gave her a loving, generous kiss. Then, after catching her breath, she explained: Loving ghosts. It's a real thing! Has been since Victorian times. And it means that we’re not alone in feeling this way. It's amazing!

Roni rushed into the kitchen to get them both a bottle of beer. She couldn't stop smiling, feeling like she’d discovered a new world of possibilities.

Beth tucked something under a book on the table and then joined Roni in the kitchen, returning the hug. That's amazing, babe.

You’re amazing, said Roni, surrendering to another kiss. She had decided that time spent not kissing Beth was time wasted.

Roni and Beth's life together was not what either of them had imagined they’d be doing. They’d always been close friends, of course, but it was only after they’d both experienced the love of a good ghost, that their relationship took an irreversible romantic turn.

It was as if falling in love with supernatural forces had opened their minds and their hearts to the limitless possibilities of earthbound relationships. It had certainly been confusing at first, to adapt to being in love with ghosts and with each other, but they had both embraced this new somewhat eccentric chapter of their lives.

Moving in together had been the next step and it brought new challenges. Roni and Beth had to adjust to each other's habits and preferences, which had been a fun voyage of discovery, whilst also adjusting to the fact that they were now both in their first same-sex relationship.

Whilst the unquenchable heat and purity of their love made perfect sense to Roni and Beth, some of their friends had struggled with the adjustment and had been unkind. But that had only served to bring the lovers closer together.

Their relationship was pure and passionate, but it was also complicated. They also had to navigate the feelings they had for their ghost lovers and how that affected the direction of their relationship with each other. There really wasn’t a roadmap for this kind of emotional territory.

Together, they had discovered a world of passion that most could never imagine. They were happy, in love, and they knew that nothing could ever tear them apart.

So, what were you hiding? Asked Roni.

    Hm?
