    Chapter 1

    Introduction

Be careful what you yearn for because that which you desire most will either complete you or destroy you, and you don’t get to choose.

    -          William Lashner

We are living in the most advanced and modernized era. Most of us believe that this is the best time to be alive, but that really isn’t the truth, and we are mistaken. Modern life is a curse through and through.

Our mobile alarms wake us up in the morning. We have machines like toaster and juicer that make our breakfast. Mobile phones have fitness applications that we use to track our health. We stay in contact, work and study through our mobiles, laptops and desktops.[1]

Everything has a wireless version that allows usage for several hours. Though the need to be charged and keeping them charged is more important, keeping ourselves charged. Because without these devices, we cannot match the pace of the world in daily tasks.

There is a traffic of cars and several other vehicles on the roads as we reach our destination. Most of us listen to music for several hours a day, eat unhealthy food and barely have a routine of walking.

We face the same traffic and noise pollution on our way home. We use our phones or big TVs to relax and get food delivered directly to our doorsteps. Soon after eating and relaxing, we fell asleep, and the next was the same.

The weekends are spent eating unhealthier food, laying in our beds for several hours and partying with our friends who also have the same life. We dream, aim and work hard to get more materials, people and facilities. That is pretty much of our lives.

Most of us live the same life and believe that this is the best life, where we keep hustling every day till the day when we have almost everything there is. But does the hustle stop after that? Definitely no.

People who have spent their entire lives like a robot and worked so hard to get certain things cannot stop. They never find the satisfaction they were looking for throughout their lives.

They can have their own house, range of houses, cars, all the people they want, and probably everything there is to get and still fail in achieving the satisfaction they were looking for.

Since all they did in their life was hard work and running after things. They had a firm belief that these things would give them the satisfaction and the peace of mind they need in there, but they ended up failing.

Failing to find peace, failing to feel satisfaction, failing to actually feel success, and failing to reach a point where they can relax and be proud of all the effort they did for it.

Why? Because it was never there in the first place. They made their lives a complete hustle for something they were never going to achieve. They always believed that a certain position or material or person was the key to their happiness just because it felt that way.

What they could never understand was that the peace of mind and the feeling of fulfillment lie not in the running after things. Instead, in learning to stay happy at the moment, they are living.

Usually, when people realize this fact, they have already spent a large portion of their lives hurting, challenging and even torturing themselves. The truth becomes a sad reality for them.

So who is the reason behind all this? What are the reasons behind people, in masses, believing that running after things is the solution? Why should we make our dreams the only purpose of our lives? Why?

We can search for the reasons around the world and talk to all those who in some way were a part of modernizing the world and try our best to produce some culprits, but we will eventually fail. Why? Because we are the real culprits.

No matter what we had in our lives, we were always looking for something more. Does not matter if we were entirely unprivileged and barely had enough food to survive the day or had every luxury of the world. All we aimed at in life was to get more. [2]

This mentality is the reason why today, we have to make so many choices every day. Because we have been trying our level best each to make sure that we could achieve a little more than others, do something in a slightly better way than the world so we could feel a little better about ourselves and prove our worth to the world. Because that is the only way we are going to get more in our life.

What most of us are unable to accept is that we are only getting more addicted to our version of success, the success that convinces us to do a little more every day without ever giving us the feel we need. The feeling of achievement, the feeling of relaxation, and satisfaction just keep getting farther away.

But we were not like this all the time, right? Our ancestors were not as greedy as we are, and they definitely lived a life of peace, so how did we become like this? What is the reason for us becoming a different breed from those who lived before us?

There is an entire design behind it. Everything that we are running after in our lives today was probably absent in the past, or there was no way of getting access to it. We did not have automatic dishwashers, and there was no instant way of contacting people across the world.

There are several other inventions like this that were created to bridge a certain gap and make human life better. Every time such an invention comes into the market, entire manuals come into the market on how to use them and how beneficial they can be.

But what they never describe is when to stop its usage or how often to use it. This is the main reason behind this huge mess. People start using it in whatever way they like, and that’s why they come addicted to it.

Addiction is one of the reasons why certain things that once used to make our life easier no longer do so. This is the point we start becoming greedy and develop this habit of wanting more and more. So, it’s kind of a technical fault, too, more so than just our mistake.

There is one more culprit behind our miserable lives, and that is the habit of comparing every single aspect of our life with others. The habit is fatal and is the reason why we remain unhappy at all times.

We are never satisfied with where we are and what we have and are hustling to achieve more, and by comparing, we make sure each day of ours is spent in misery. We lose the only drop of happiness that we get during the journey of achieving something.

So if you are to stop running after everything, then what is the purpose of our lives? What should be the reason to get out of our bed every day? At what point are we to decide that our dreams have started destroying the peace of life? How to differentiate between procrastination and doing what really matters?

The purpose of our lives is not to get everything that exists, but nobody can ever manage to do that. It does not mean there is no need for motivation and that living a better life is a wrong idea. But we need to make sure that we feel fulfilled every day.

If we are feeling better after an entire day of hard work the same day, it means we have to take a better look at what we are aiming for. Because if we are not happy today with what we have, we will never find peace even if we achieve all the unrealistically big dreams we have.

Each of these questions has been answered a hundred times, but people have become addicted to the false version of success and cannot do anything but run toward making their life a bigger mess than it is. The reason is that we have developed our minds that way.

We need to ask ourselves this question again and again, how much do you want? What is it that we really want? When is enough, enough? Questioning ourselves every day seems to be the only possible way for us starting to accepting that there is a need for us to change.

Our minds need to be trained again from the very beginning, and the decision needs to be made now. No matter how much life of yours you think is left, take the decision, and you will appreciate yourself. Similarly, you can be as bad of an addict as can be; it does not matter. If you have the will, nothing is impossible.

One of the first steps towards training your mind to free yourself from this miserable life is to stop trying to prove your worth to the world. It is a task you cannot do, not because you cannot please everybody, but because you are not designed to do so. [3]

People can only work so hard that it satisfies them. They need to make sure their satisfaction lies in their own happiness and in things they genuinely care about. Not what other tell us are important for us.

Work, work hard if that’s what you think will bring you peace, but never do it so you can get the approval of the world. Because that is something you are never getting. Nobody could get
