As I begin writing this little book for all the young boys and girls who are about to become teens, my life has advanced to its twilight. However, with all the twists and turns, obstacles and detours, it has been an interesting journey. There have been lots of happy years, but there have also been some sad years. Unfortunately, the sad years were created through my own mistakes and bad choices.
However, my goal for this piece of writing is to share wisdom and understanding with America's youth as they begin this long but quick voyage we call life. It will seem to be a long journey; however, it will go by very quickly. So let me share with you some secrets, facts, and generally good advice about life that will help you, if you learn and heed it. Perhaps it will prevent you from making a lot of the same mistakes that I and many others have made over the course of our lives.
Ideally, it is best to observe and learn from the mistakes of others. However, unfortunately, most people will not do this. Instead, they have to make their own mistakes, move into their own experiences, and make their own choices.
I dedicate this little book to my granddaughter Jolie, of whom I have not been able to spend enough time. But she is a bright ray of sunshine to my life when we are together.
Choices
Life is full of choices. In fact, the greatest power we possess as humans is the power to make choices. But choices always have consequences. Good choices will produce good consequences, and bad choices will always yield bad consequences. This is a law of life. It is like the law of gravity that says, If I throw the ball up, the ball will always come down.
It is possible for one bad choice that we impulsively make without wise counsel or careful consideration to produce terrible and miserable consequences that may last for the rest of your life. So always think about the choice that you are about to make. Ask yourself, What could be the possible results or outcome from making this choice?
Always look at both the short-term and the long-term possible consequences of making any choice.
So how can you know if a choice is right or wrong? It should involve several thoughts and questions. First, never make an important choice quickly. Always take some time to think about it. Ask yourself, Where will this choice take me?
Will this choice build me up or could it tear me down?
Will I feel guilty after I make this choice?
Will this choice fit who I am?
I am about to share with you the most important and greatest choice you will ever make in your entire lifetime. After you make this choice, you will find it easier to make correct choices in other areas of your life. This choice involves asking Jesus Christ to be a part of your life. Then you will have a counselor and helper in your life, along with a guidebook to assist you in making right choices.
So bear with me, and I will explain in more detail why and how to do this.
Living with an Eternal Perspective
Our physical lives are extremely insignificant and short when compared to eternity. You may not realize or understand this until you are much older. Most of us live life and plan our life with short-term goals. We may plan ahead six months or one year which seems like a long time. However, I am going to try to explain the eternal perspective that God has in mind for us to visualize.
Our lives are like a long voyage that may last for seventy-five to eighty years or longer. For some, it may be longer, but for others, it will be much less. We did not have a choice about when it would begin, but the day we were conceived in our mother's womb, our life's journey began. There will also come a day when our journey on this earth will come to an end, and we will step over into another existence called eternity.
There are some things that we can do that will either lengthen, shorten, improve, or harm our lives while here on earth such as good or bad lifestyle habits. But one day, our final day will eventually arrive; and when it does, we will have no choice about it.
But like every other journey, there is an in-between time from start to finish. These are the years between our birth and our death. Sometimes they are tragically brief. But for most of us, we will live many years of life, moving successfully from childhood to adolescence,
