I WAS JUST FINISHING washing the dinner dishes when my phone rang. I was angry that my daughter, Mariska, was late. She and her friends had gone to Charleston to shop for school clothes. They promised to be back before five. Looking at the clock, it was just after seven. My mother’s intuition was kicking into high gear.
