    Move aside, Danny-boy! Jimmy pushed Danny aside as he rushed down the school corridor, turned his head and yelled, You’re always in the way, loser!

    It was true, and Danny had the scars, the bruises, the chipped teeth and a bagful of pained feelings, remorse and embarrassment to prove it. He was always in the way, always in the wrong place at the wrong time, always barring the right-of-way of someone’s path as though he, himself, were part of some grand conspiracy to throw everyone around him off the course of their lives. But unlike the burning logs on the railroad track, Danny was invariably pushed, kicked or thrown aside…ignominiously and brutally. He might have been a snow flake for all the effect he had on the lives of those whose paths he blocked. It was like he’d been born a foot to the left of his own life.
