    Lying in the street with his body broken and bleeding, Benny Smith did something strange. Rainwater glistened under a flickering streetlight as he watched his blood flow into a puddle by his head, spilling his life into the street.

    He smiled.

    This was unusual for Benny, who’d rarely twisted his lips into that sharp upward arc of the lips even in the best of times. There’d been little, if anything, to smile about his is his 75 years occupying space in a world that held no interest for him.

    Yes, Benny was 75 years old which, of course, is just a number and doesn’t say much about him except that he was old. But let’s look at this in a more meaningful way. He was born June 8, 1947.

    See the difference? He was born two years after World War II. Televisions were scarce and they were tiny screens encased in large wooden cabinets. Just like the radios, also encased in large wooden cabinets. And most people, not having televisions, listened to radios, the adults sitting in chairs or chesterfields, the children sitting in semicircles in front of the cabinets bathing
