That was one hell of a way to end a performance on a high note!
Sal cheerily announced as we exited the stage at the awards show, his smile as wide as the moon. Welcome to the family son,
he told Diamond before pulling him into a hug.
Since coming out, our stoic drummer had finally found his happy place. Well, between that and reconnecting with his mother and brother, he’d become a whole new man. Don’t get me wrong, he was still the Social Sinners class clown, but now his humor wasn’t used to mask the pain I knew was lurking beneath it. Instead, it was sincere happiness rising to the surface. Nothing made me happier than to see this side of him.
I can’t deny the reluctance I felt when he first reconnected with his brother and later his mother. The fear was always there that they’d be no better than his piece of shit father, but thankfully they proved me wrong.
When Easton approached us with his idea on how to propose and shared Diamond’s fumbled attempt while he was in rehab, well, there wasn’t a snowball's chance in hell we weren’t gonna help him out with this. Not to mention the fact that the song Diamond had written for him was by far the best one he’d penned to date, and Stoli and I were excited to perform it. In all actuality, I’d say it was in my top five favorites from the Social Sinners song library. Diamond hadn’t pitched it to the team yet, but I think after tonight’s performance, he’ll be open to letting us write the music and produce it for our next CD. Man, who new Diamond had a poet trapped beneath that gruff exterior?
My brothers and I had come a long way since we first met our freshman year of high school. Through the pain of family drama, loss, attempted suicide, and addiction, our bond never faltered. We made a thousand and one mistakes while walking the paths we’d traveled yet here we were, ready to embark upon our first European tour with our friends who’d long since become an extended part of our family Maiden Voyage. Man, the way they came through for us time and again just blew me away. Never once did they ask for anything in return. No hidden agenda or devious subplot was behind each thoughtful gift they extended our way. They were just all-around great guys with huge fucking hearts.
Pictures taken of the four of us over the years adorned the walls of our home office. My favorites were the ones of us standing at the front of the stage after performing for the first time at our high school talent show. Our arms were proudly swung around each other’s shoulders as we took a bow. Pride radiated through our massive smiles. Right beside that one was the same pose taken a few years later after performing at our first sold-out show. On the desk beside the frame that held a picture of Stoli and me on our wedding day sat the photo Easton had snapped of our band when we signed
