Being a parent is by far one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. It however, does not come without struggle. Throughout your parental journey, you are sure to feel everything imaginable. Love, joy, happiness, pride, and even overwhelm. While you will feel all those warm and fuzzy feelings you will also feel terror, sadness, exhaustion, and anger. You children are bound to know every button that you have and they are going to press them - slam on them even. While you often have had full control over your emotions, buckle up - that is about to change. Whether this is your first child or the first time you are experiencing your child at this particular age, there will be something in this book to help you become a calmer, happier parent. The goal of this book is to give you tools to help you process emotions that you are certain to feel at some point, or maybe have been feeling, a ton of lately. You will work on having a calmer and safer space for yourself and your child, coping with feelings of anger, understanding your triggers, curbing your defensive behavior and even start working on rebuilding the relationship with your child.
Let’s dive in, you are one step closer to being calmer, happier, and nicer in your everyday life just as you and your child deserve!
Chapter 2: How Anger Affects the Brain
Before we can even dive into processing anger, we have to understand what anger can do to us, our brain, and those around us. Not only are there physical responses to anger, but also emotional and mental effects that anger can have on us, the person losing their temper as well as the people around you when you are angry.
Studies have shown that when you become angry your entire body will literally tense up. Muscles will feel as if they are locking up. Most often when you are angry your brain will release chemicals that make you feel extremely energized. People naturally enjoy that rush of energy and will often lean into the feeling. It is present for several minutes and will make the anger escalate more and more. Just like with any other rush of feeling, there will be a crash. However, while it's present it will often make the person feeling it lock their sights on the target of the anger, making it more difficult to self regulate and calm down. After a while, being stuck in this state, you will have to reset your brain. It is going to be more and more difficult to control the gut reaction of anger. You will be in an uphill battle within yourself and your brain.
When we are in a state of anger, our brain is quite literally preparing to fight. The more often you experience anger, the longer it will last and the easier it will be to fall into that state. So, the longer you have been battling this reactionary behavior the harder it is going to be to come out of it and reroute your mind.
Anger has a direct effect on our memory as well. The more angry you are, the more often you become angry will play a huge role in how well you remember not just the moment of outburst but moments leading up to and even after the anger. It will dilute the way you see situations and how you retell stories, thus leading to more anger if others remember things differently than you. Not only will your memory be affected but your ability to concentrate will also take a hit. Ever tried to work while seething with anger? Near to impossible.
Anger has been directly linked to depression, anxiety, headaches and other life long health problems. Staying in a state of anger can truly shorten your life. So, to say it's a good thing you are here, reading this book is an understatement.
Now that you understand a bit more of
