Your Warrior Stance - Carmen Davenport
Wisdom
Knowing how to utilize information and knowledge you have access to is more important than having access to the information and knowledge.
—Carmen Davenport
In accordance with Merriam-Webster, wisdom is defined as the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships or having good sense.
Some may believe wisdom is a spiritual impartation placed on people, that it is a special gift similar to what Mahatma Gandhi, Dalai Lama, or Yoda possessed. Well, for me, this is not entirely true. One does not have to be exceptional to possess wisdom. Wisdom is developed through a combination of experience and knowledge.
Experience can begin as early as one can remember. For example, I experienced the importance of family at the early age of five. I recall my family gathering and having a wonderful time listening to music, dancing, and laughing. That experience taught me about the importance of happiness.
In my later years, I understood how important and wise it is to have family around as much as possible. Knowledge is acquired over time, especially through scientific and philosophical studies, which contribute to a level of wisdom. A continuation of education within these studies will also increase one’s knowledge on diverse topics, leading to an overflowing level of wisdom. As we can see, wisdom can be attributed to a combination of knowledge and experience. When used accordingly, it can resemble the feeling of enlightenment, a rebirth of insight.
So how can we apply and benefit from the use of wisdom in our everyday life? Everything we need is already available to us, either through books, technology, or people. Look at the happenings around us and identify how they may eventually affect our lives. Our experiences teach lessons that will adhere to us for the rest of our lives. In many cases, we learn from negative experiences what should prevent us from repeating those same experiences.
Our wisdom should eventually remind us of past situations so that we may now have the sensitivity to make different decisions or choices. Wisdom can teach us to not respond to situations in the same manner as we did when we did not have the knowledge and understanding we now have. Wisdom can also help make our lives better than it has been if used during the most opportune moments.
In life, there are two things that tend to be extremely important to most of us: family and work. Would you agree? Well, that is unless you are a man and your car is your priority. We wish to experience and enjoy life with our family as well as support our family. To provide for our families, a source of income is required. Therefore, this should create a sense of importance within our work life. The next sections will illustrate how we can develop the use of wisdom in these two areas of our lives and hopefully help us rise to the next level.
Family Life
In life, everything we do will require some level of wisdom to be successful, so why not start with things that are closest and most important to us, our family? Below, you will see why wisdom is a requirement to create a healthy family and benefit your future generations.
A requirement. Having wisdom is a requirement when creating a healthy life for our family. In today’s society, families are faced with many adversities, such as mental illnesses, physical ailments, alcoholism, drug use / addictions, sexual abuse, bullying, and so many other issues that are detrimental to the life of our family system. So often, these issues are not spoken of within the family, and the silence may become damaging to the familial structure. A healthy family cannot be built on a cracked foundation, so let us fill in those cracks of unspoken concerns and reveal the secrets for the health of our future generations.
The cycles can be difficult to identify unless we truly sit back and evaluate where yours and your family’s negative patterns are. This evaluation may be difficult to deal with; however, it must be completed if we genuinely want to break these generational cycles.
This is where wisdom must prevail to stop these cycles. There must be a recognition and acceptance of the cyclic patterns. To do this, sit and share your family’s history with one another. Through these moments, experience and knowledge are gained to better understand the family and its origin. Even those funny stories that parents do not want their kids to know about, the aunties, uncles, and grandparents will tell them.
Now do not get me wrong, I am not saying the above scenario will be the same for all families. Some families may reopen unhealed wounds, troubled past, or unwanted memories. However, there will be an opportunity to talk about some upsetting issues and secrets and then begin a path of healing. Once we have been informed of this information and provided with this knowledge, we now have the opportunity to use our wisdom to prevent these cycles from affecting us and our next generation. What a difference we can make in so many other people’s
