    The De Canio Hotel was a grand affair, grander than almost every luxury hotel in the east end. Chandeliers hung like intimate spectators to the finely furnished tables below, laden with a white tablecloth that sparkled as if the full moon. Cutlery clinked as if in invitation for guests to sit and eat. The chairs were of an antique French kind, legs curled as if waves captured in motion, and of a golden finish as if King Midas himself had touched it.
