Ready to Go Bible Messages 1 - Pilgrim Preacher

    How Precious a Box?

    Outline:

    1: Faith  2: Hope  3: Love

Mark 14:1 After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.  14:2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

The chief priests and scribes desired to kill Jesus. Why, what evil had he done? He had traveled through the villages and cities, teaching about the Kingdom of God, healing, and doing all manner of miracles. There was no evil worthy of the death penalty. These religious leaders wished him to be dead. The reason is that Jesus, through his ministry, exposed their hypocrisy and corruption. They wanted to kill Jesus, but not in a way that would bring attention, lest there be a riot among the people. They knew that the multitude loved Jesus. Many of them had been healed; many of them had their lives changed by him.

And so, it is today: there are enemies of Jesus Christ who want to maintain control over the throng, and they want to close down any movement that threatens their position. They want to stop you from testifying about the naked gospel message. They will not attack openly because they want to avoid an uproar, but they will do it subtly.

God wants to know, who will stand up for Jesus today? There is an assault on Christians and the Christian message. Apart from fellowship, the only thing that you can defend yourself with is the truth. The Bible is the absolute truth. Learn verses to memory to apply in times of distress. It will be your inner strength.

During this antagonism without, there is a beautiful story of inner peace. Something very special happens inside the home of Simon.

Mark 14:3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

Jesus visited the village of Bethany and sat in the house of Simon to share a meal. Jesus sat at the dining table. A woman came with an alabaster box of precious ointment of spikenard. The alabaster box is made of very expensive oriental wood. The spikenard anointment is very expensive. The spikenard comes from the Himalayan Mountain area. And so, this lady breaks that precious box and pours that ointment upon the head and shoulders of Jesus. The very expensive, precious ointment is lavished upon Jesus.

The woman broke that box to show that she had:

    ––––––––

    1: Faith

The woman broke that box to show that she had faith in her savior. This was her Savior, the one who had changed her life, the one who had made such a marvelous difference in her life. She realized that her life was different: old things had passed away; all things had become new. She was changed by the new birth, not by her own work. Precious salvation was hers. And this was her savior. She could trust His words. And by breaking this box and lavishing the ointment upon her savior, she showed that she believed in him.

    ––––––––

    2: Hope

This woman had been forgiven for many transgressions. Breaking the precious box displayed that she had hope in Jesus and who he claimed to be. She had hope in Jesus to give her a better future. Now, Jesus and his cause came first in her life. She wanted to follow him as His disciple and pour out her life for him. And as the fragrance of that perfume filled the room, she displayed how she was also willing to be broken and spilled out.

The religious leaders would soon arrest Jesus and have him crucified on the cross. Jesus was soon to be broken and poured out without measure. He was soon to be broken like this box and poured out like this ointment. Jesus was destined to be broken and poured out in his death on the cross. This Jesus was the lover of her soul.

Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

Second Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. 2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: 2:16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

Jesus was the sweet-smelling flower who died for us as our substitute. Jesus was the spikenard ointment, broken and spilled out, and his sweet fragrance became our salvation. When God the Father looks at us in Christ, he smells a fragrant perfume. We, who were once a stench in God's nostrils in our sin, are now made unto God a sweet-smelling fragrance. The loving Savior who was broken and poured out for us has clothed, seated, and poured his favor upon our heads.

    ––––––––

    3: Love

This woman was willing to be broken and poured out for Jesus because she had love. This lady gave the best that she could because she had love. Today, how precious a box would you bring to the Lord Jesus Christ? Today, how precious an ointment would you bring to the Lord Jesus Christ? Would you bring him the most expensive alabaster box and spikenard ointment, or would you bring him an aerosol can with artificial spray? So much of what we give to Jesus Christ is shallow and artificial. Isn't he worth more? Our worship should not be artificial. Always worship from your heart.

This woman had a love for Jesus. She showed it through her actions. She brought the best and poured it on him. What will you present to Jesus today? What will you lavish on Jesus today? What about money? How much do you give to Jesus, his church, and his gospel work? The Bible indicates you ought to bring the first fruits of ten percent of your income into the house of God. And over and above the tithe, there is the free-will offering, which is determined by grace and love. This is where your faith, hope, and love are proven. Not proven to people but to Jesus. This alabaster box was a freewill offering, and she presented the best because her love for Jesus constrained her. How much do you put in the offering bag?

Mark 14:4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 14:5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

Other people sitting in the room murmured against the woman. Why was this waste of a precious box and ointment made? Why did you lavish that on Jesus? Is that your attitude? Will you murmur against the brother or sister in Christ who serves the Lord? Do you think that giving to Jesus is a waste of time and money? Do you think bringing your tithes and offerings into the house of God is a waste of time and money? Is that your attitude? Consider what Jesus has done for you; what will you do for him?

Jesus defends her: Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 14:7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 14:8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 14:9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

Jesus is saying, I am unique, and this situation is unique. I won’t be among you for much longer. She has recognized that my life is in danger, and she has done what she could to anoint my body for burial. What she has done will be recorded and remembered.

Jesus says, Leave her alone. She has done a good job with me. Do not murmur against a zealous brother or sister who wants to show their devotion to Jesus. Someone who is standing on the stage in front of the congregation: don't criticize them. Someone who
