    Daniel, The Boy

At nightfall, Daniel enjoyed the solitude of his room located on the second floor of his grandmother’s house. His Grandma Josephine’s house always smelled of cooked beans and cabbage as she often listened to Jazz radio while knitting away with her yarn and spool.

One particular evening though, Daniel entered his grandmother’s house covered in dirt and banana peels stuck to his shoulders.

Grandma Josephine yelled, Daniel! Take off yer shoes! You’ll be tracking mud all over the place.

Yet, as she walked out of the kitchen, Grandma Josephine quickly caught Daniel on his way up to his room.

Wait just there Daniel! she yelled. Why on earth are you all covered in filth?

We played a bit of Badgerball again in school today, grandma, replied Daniel.

Good heavens! Have they started using bananas in the game?

It’s a long story, Grandma Josephine.

Alright, as long as nobody got hurt. Continue about.

Daniel Stone was a rather scrawny young lad with blond hair and a pair of island blue eyes. He wore tan colored trousers and a burgundy brown sport jacket. Underneath his jacket though, he wore a dark, blue-purple sweater with the imprint of a cat on it.

But what made Daniel oh so very special, was his red colored scarf with its two yellow stripes at either end. But just for the record, the boy was unaware of the scarf’s unique abilities. Daniel's Grandma Josephine however, hand knitted the scarf for Daniel when he was only four years of age.

Daniel just adored attending class. His school was named Rutherford Preparatory School of Worldly Exploration named after the world famous Arthur Rutherford who successfully travelled to the North and South Poles in a single year among many other well known expeditions. You see, the texts were filled with many Rutherford adventures of the like.

Daniel absolutely loved reading, writing, and arithmetic. In particular, Daniel had a strong penchant for Trigonometry. Yes the curves and points of shapes really floated his boat.

Clumsily, hanging off the edge of his bed with his head upside down, Daniel continued to read his text book about right angles. He then closely held his hands to his face, making a square with his thumb and pointer finger. In the square, however, appeared his cat who jumped off the sill and perched on a pillow next to the boy. Daniel then rolled back around, now sitting upright on his bed.

Petting his brown furry, feline friend, Daniel asked, I wonder Whiskers, whatever happened to Aunt Riley? The boy continued, It’s just so peculiar."

Now although the boy lived with his grandmother for the past several years, it was his Aunt Riley who really raised him when he was just a small child. But when Daniel was at the age of five, his aunt had disappeared while climbing Mount Dresnin also known as the Land of the Dragons. No, she was not dead, nor was she found either. But yes, Daniel’s aunt was quite the archeologist and explorer.

Well then, what about his parents you might ask. Oh, they were still very much around and they too were quite the explorers. You see, Daniel's parents, Joan and Marcus Stone, were offered grants to explore various landmarks all around the world. The latest being a deep diving expedition in the Artilian Sea. However, they were too far and too busy to really raise poor Daniel. Yet, they did keep good tabs on their boy, checking in on him from time to time via satellite TV.

But now at the age of eleven and three quarters, Daniel became quite the intelligent young lad. On the other hand, he also had quite the reputation of being a lonely home body as well.

In fact, many of the other classmates in school would chant, Daniel the lump, Daniel the lump. Back on his bum, back on his bum!

Oh yes, the children used to torment poor Daniel quite often. But it wasn’t just the students you see. Many of the professors at Rutherford used to say, why aren’t you more like your Aunt Riley. Or, your Aunt Riley could do this, now how come you can’t. But it was when they said, you're nothing like a Stone, just a lazy good for nothin’ ringer puff, which really hit Daniel hard.

Truth be told, the only single soul other than his grandmother and cat, Whiskers, who Daniel could rely on, was his Uncle Winslo. Yes, Uncle Winslo was a man short in stature with a long beard and pointed brown cap. However, the rather short man was very strong, you see. For he was a fisherman and quite good at the trade if I might add. But as it was, Uncle Winslo lived in a quaint, little cabin in the middle of a wooded land called Fourthshire. It had a bed, a table, and an old stove used for cooking Daniel’s favorite, Reddington Clam Chowder.

But although his house was small, it was the beauty of the outside wilderness Daniel loved most about it. You see, it was right here in the forest of Fourthshire where Daniel loved to go exploring. Especially around old abandoned castles nearby. His favorite was the old Davenport Castle, where the heirs of the Davenport family used to reign. Laying simply on the outskirts of the forest, stood the Davenport Castle overlooking the Sea of Veronica, named after Queen Veronica of Hampshire, who married into the Davenport family.

On one particular day, Daniel participated in Rutherford’s favorite pastime, otherwise known as a game of Badgerball. Each team would pass around a red colored ball catching it in a picnic sized basket until one player kicked the ball into the opposing team's net. Each player was allowed only one kick per possession and everyone must catch the ball in their baskets. In addition, players can only touch the ball after they have caught it in their baskets. And goals can only be kicked in. The net, however, was a little smaller than a football net protected by a goalkeeper.

And although Daniel enjoyed playing Badgerball, he wasn’t quite good at the sport. You see, his coordination was a little off and at times, he wouldn’t realize his own strength. One time, while playing in class, Daniel meant to pass the ball to Charlie Webster. But when the boy attempted to pass the ball, he threw it too far, hitting one of the other rather larger classmates in the head.

Yes, that day, luck was not on Daniel’s side, for he hit Ernie Bunkers directly on the noggin. Ernie had black hair parted to the side and was the tallest player on the field. And although he wasn’t exactly the smartest in the class, he was definitely the strongest. Thus, as Ernie too had a short temper, Daniel now ended up in the school’s large trash container for the remainder of the day.

However, fortunately for Daniel, his feline friend Whiskers would come to join him. Yes, Daniel found a new comfort in the area behind the school’s trash, which was located right behind the automotive classroom where students worked on local cabs. Though, Daniel was not interested in such things as he had more of an inclination for Trigonometry and Physics. Yes, the boy and his cat would perform many experiments behind the dumpster involving inertia, gravity, and spatial relations.

Whiskers then hopped off the bed and nestled himself in one of Daniel's sweaters resting on the ground.

    Little Lizzie Peters

Suddenly, from outside, Daniel heard a sound, which resembled that of a tree branch snapping loose. The boy then walked to the window and realized it was little Lizzie Peters, the girl next door. Lizzie at the age of nine and a half, stood small with two braided ponytails coming off the back of her head. She wore rectangular spectacles with two little bows at the bottom of her braids. And as she was clothed in a dark violet dress with dark black stockings, she too wore matching black bows upon her brown suede shoes.

Yet, now perched in the tree, the little girl was spotted.

Daniel then slid the window open and asked, Lizzie, is that you again?

Though, as Lizzie was quite shy, she did not answer at first.

Lizzie, I know it's you. You can climb up and come inside if you’d like. So the little girl did just that, as Lizzie continued to scale up the tree and crawl across the branch into Daniel’s window.

Lizzie, don’t you know it's late.

The young girl, however, ignored Daniel’s question, immediately proceeding to walk towards Whiskers. She then bent down and held the cat’s paws, swaying them from left to right as if they were dancing to a waltz in a ballroom scene. Though, all Daniel could do was sigh and watch the two twirl around in delight.

Daniel, is that little Peters again? asked Grandma Josephine from the bottom of the staircase.

    Yes, Grandma Josephine!

    Tell her it’s getting late!

But as the girl continued to spin around with Whiskers, she now began to feel a tad bit squeamish.

Best be on your way Lizzie, recommended Daniel.

And as the cat's eyes spun uncontrollably in his head, Lizzie then placed a very dizzy Whiskers back on the ground.

But before Daniel could muster out another word, Grandma Josephine yelled, Daniel! Get yer tuchus down here and bring little Peters. I’ve made snippets and honey tea!

Lizzie then hurriedly ran out of Daniel’s room and yelled, Yay!

Daniel, on the other hand, covered his face with his hand and thought, guess I’ll just finish my homework later then.

So without wasting another second, Daniel quickly followed Lizzie down the staircase. They then ran into the kitchen where Grandma Josephine poured hot water into two white porcelain tea cups.

Now let this cool down a bit. We don’t want ya to burn yer tongues off!

Grandma Josephine then sought after the tray of snippets, which were jelly flavored crackers topped with a vanilla frosting. And as she gently placed the snacks in front of the children, she then happily pulled up a seat and joined them as well.

Thank you, Grandma Josephine, the two responded in unison.

    Yer quite welcome.

You see, Grandma Josephine was a rather large woman with an even larger heart. She had long white hair, which was slightly wavy, extending to the middle of her back. And as she usually wore a white dress with orange polka dots, she occasionally sported a light green sweater that stretched across her broad shoulders. Yes, Grandma could hold her own against any rugby player, but was as gentle as a mouse. And this is why Lizzie loved joining Daniel’s grandmother so much. But not only did she visit Daniel’s grandmother for her comfort and warmth, but also for her stories of the past.

How are yer parents, Lizzie? asked Grandma Josephine.

    They’re fine, thanks.

That's good child, that’s good. Grandma Josephine continued, Well I didn’t expect to have company tonight, but while I got ya here, I might as well tell you a story.

Lizzie’s eyes lit up with joy mainly because things back at home weren't nearly as interesting. As it was, Mr. Peters was a tax accountant for the Reddington government and Mrs. Peters was a lovely housewife, who spent much of her time catering to Mr. Peters’ needs. So the only exciting thing going on back at the Peters’ house this time of night, was the eight-o-clock news with Gram Stoker.

Let’s see, said Grandma Josephine, tapping her chin with her finger. Oh, I know. Did Daniel ever tell you about his Aunt Riley?

And as Lizzie shook her head from side to side, her eyes grew wide open in suspense.

Daniel, however, stubbornly placed his hand on his cheek and unenthusiastically said, Here we go, another Aunt Riley story.

Yes, Daniel’s Aunt Riley was quite the brave soul. Truly a modern day warrior. Yes, kings and queens from all around the world have heard of the famous Riley Stone. Oh, when she was only about…

Abruptly, Daniel rudely interrupted, Eleven years old she had already encountered her first Dragon in Newfitterland.

Daniel, I do beg your pardon! Will you let me finish the story!

Yes, do go on, insisted Lizzie.

Daniel, however, rolled his eyes and said, "Sorry Grandma
