Dirby’s Big Day
Yes, things were looking up for Dirby these days. His heroic efforts of saving his uncle and awarding the raffle-day contestant winners their promised 75 pounds of pepper baked cheese elevated Dirby as a most trustworthy and well respected mouse here in Yukatah. Uncle Harvard continued to live with Dirby in his quaint little apartment located in Ralphius’ room. The two ran multiple train lines in Yukatah village and were highly reputable. They even opened a special line for those who wanted to visit Yorkshire Gardens, or, even further, to Grand Station where mice from all over London could ride the famous Uni-rail, which could circle around the globe in under one week.
Good morning, my nephew!
YAWN! Good morning Uncle Harvard.
Did you get a good night’s sleep last night? I hope you did. Today’s your big day!
Big day?
Dirby asked.
Dirby quickly looked at his calendar hanging on the wall next to his tiny stove. There were big red circles around today's date. In the center of the circle was writing. It read:
Dirby’s Big Day!
Oh my goodness! It’s today! I almost forgot!
Oh, dear heavens, Dirby. With all the excitement going on, you really ought to have an assistant to help you remember things. Whatever happened to sweet, Ms. Mary Jenkins?
Dirby sat down at the kitchen table next to his uncle and sadly explained, Ms. Mary Jenkins is no longer, here in Yukatah, Uncle Harvard.
Uncle Harvard raised his brow in confusion.
Dirby continued, You see, she recently fell in love with Spain’s world renowned aviator and adventure seeker, Fernando Rugusto.
Well, that’s love, kid. Sometimes it's just not meant to be.
Tell me, Uncle Harvard, how have you stayed with Aunt Martha for all these years?
My dear nephew, only the heart knows the true answer to that question!
Uncle Harvard looked at a picture of Aunt Martha and continued, Which reminds me, Dirby. I think it's better I tell you now.
Dirby opened his eyes wide and lifted his mouse ears.
I think it's best if I return to Aunt Martha soon. It has been sometime and I do miss her very much. I think you’re more than capable of running the train lines on your own here. Who knows, perhaps another opportunity will present itself for you in the near future.
Perhaps.
You better get ready, Dirby! The mayor has prepared a speech for you in front of the entire city!
Thanks for the chat, old chap!
Anytime, my dear boy! Now go. Get ready and be on your way. You don’t want to keep the whole village of Yukatah waiting’ for ya!
Right!
Dirby swiftly stood to his feet and proceeded into the washroom. He washed his face, brushed his teeth, and combed his hair. He threw on his best navy blue suit and headed for the door.
Before he left, he shouted, Uncle Harvard! Are you coming?
You go ahead, old chap! I'll meet you down there in a bit. I just wanted to finish up my reading here!
Uncle Harvard said, holding his printed copy of the Mouse World News above his head.
Fair enough, old chap!
As Dirby exited his apartment, Uncle Harvard adjusted his glasses and positioned his paper closer to his nose. The headline read:
Bellow Cats Escape Hong Kong Prison! Rumored to be in Cahoots with Criminal Kingpin, Nefareus Tiger!
Uncle Harvard placed the paper down and said to himself, Oh dear, I must inform Dirby about this at once!
***
Dirby finally made it to his train located next to Ralphius' desk. He found a note attached to its window, which read:
Dear Dirby,
Congratulations on your big day! Father and I will be in the crowd rooting for you. We had to leave a bit earlier as Father had business to take care of at the bank this morning. See you at the ceremony.
Sincerely,
Your friend,
Ralphius
Dirby folded up the letter and placed it in his pocket. He hopped in the driver's seat and placed his conductor's hat upon his head. He turned the train's switch to the on position and started the engine.
Dirby snapped his goggles upon his head and said, Alright Dirby, next stop, Yukatah Square!
And off he was on his train. Only this time, instead of driving out of Ralphius’ window, he was now headed towards the room’s door. It looked as if Dirby was going to crash directly into the bottom of the door. But at the last second, Dirby pressed
