    Walid

    King’s castle

    Akeem’s workout room

    Drip!

    Drip!

    Drip!

With his eyes on the floor and the sweat dripping on the floor, Akeem tries to tune out the internal monologue of his brain and heart.

    My lord,

    Rehman?

Doctor Qashid is here. He wants to talk to -

    Send him in,

Getting up from the floor, and wiping himself, Akeem wears his shirt and takes in some water. The door at his back opens and –

    This is disgusting,

The words lash against his heart, brain and his skin. Akeem exhales heavily and turns to the wise doctor. Not saying anything, he goes to him and kneels. Downcast eyes and almost shuddering with anticipation, King Akeem Abrak of Walid doesn’t raise his eyes at the old man.

He has always looked at Qashid as a father figure. The late king, Sultan Jafar and Qashid were good friends. After Jafar’s death, it was Qashid who became the guiding light in Akeem and Bushra’s bleak world.

You don’t deserve any of my blessings today,

Akeem exhales but doesn’t rise. He waits and knows that Qashid will give up soon. A minute later, the old man’s hand pats his head but it is momentary. Qashid walks away from him and Akeem rises.

What the hell were you thinking?

What will you have with coffee? Your favourite Danish cookies or the ginger one?

I am not here to eat, Aki.

Akeem’s mouth lifts for a moment but he sobers up. Qashid is the only one who still calls him Aki. Sitting right opposite Qashid, while he studies the man, Qashid looks around the study cum gym room and frowns.

I won’t beat around the bush, Qashid says, Her left foot is fractured. Metatarsal bones will take some time to mend themselves. This is repulsive, even for you, my lord. King or not, nobody gives you the right to kidnap a bride right amid her wedding ceremony. You have compromised her status for eternity in the Arab world, do you realise that?

Akeem looks at the floor and his mouth straightens. Nodding, he looks at Qashid, I do. These were unfortunate circumstances but at least, now Prince Naeb will know how it feels.

Naeb? a pause, What has Naeb got to do with it?

He has everything to do with this.

    Enlighten me,

Both of them stop as the server boy comes with the refreshments. As the drinks and snacks are served, Akeem intervenes.

I’ll make it for him, Zain. Thank you,

My lord, the boy bows and leaves. Without answering Akeem continues with the tea preparation and hands it over to his uncle-cum-father.

I am still waiting you know? Qashid halts, turns and bends a little to take the saucer out of Akeem’s hands but stops. The state of Akeem’s hands stops him.

What did you do with your hands?

Nothing that I haven’t done before, carelessly, shrugging his concern away, Akeem looks at Qashid. That all-knowing stare doesn’t wave away from Akeem’s face. Defeated, he smiles and says, Ok, ok. I hurt myself for abducting her in the first place. I realised quite late that the following actions are going to heavily reflect on her future as well. I just…lost it,

At least you realised it, Qashid nods and takes a sip but that frown doesn’t leave his face, So what now? What have you decided?

Akeem sips his tea but shakes his head.

Whatever you decide, you need to know a few things.

As Qashid reveals Reva’s secrets before Akeem, the world outside gets darkened up with huge clouds. Seems like a heavy downpour is about to be there.

    *********

    REVA

    GUEST BEDROOM CHAMBER

Crushed rose petals surround her everywhere. There is too much redness everywhere she sees. Such a weird colour, this red! Signifies so many good things yet is also a harbinger of misfortune, heart-breaks and many other ill deeds. She knows she is dreaming because her mating room would never look like this.

She hates roses and the sickly-sweet smell around her makes her choked up. Her mating bed is in sight and she proceeds towards it. What was Taufik thinking? Decorating the room with these disgusting blooms? Doesn’t he know her dislikes for them?

He’s sitting there on the bed and-

    She winces and looks down!

Something stabs her foot. With horror, she realises that it wasn’t the roses she was walking on, it was blood!

Gross thing is all over the floor and –

Careful, the soft feminine voice almost makes her head spin. A jolt of pain washes before a firm hand closed over her. Opening her eyes and panting, she finds two half-veiled faces hovering above her.

    Careful, that voice says again.

Princess, are you ok? the other one says. Reva looks from one side to the other but her mind remains muddled.

You’ll hurt yourself. Stop hitting your foot. The hand softens and both girls sit next to her. While one urges her to suck ice, the other re-arranges her dress. As some moisture trickles down her throat, Reva looks around befuddled. She wants to say something but her throat is dry.

W-who- where am I? What happened? the croak leaves her
