    Aham Hospital

    Kingdom Of Aham

    Ophthalmology Unit

    Eye Surgery Room.

    Ok, open your eyes slowly,

    Everyone waits with bated breath.

    Slowly, slowly…

Princess Yeva-bin-Aham, the youngest princess of the kingdom and the widowed wife of late Prince Abbas, sighs heavily. She'd heard from others like her that eye operations are always very perilous. But currently, as she opens her eyes, the blurred vision makes her blink rapidly and she thinks on that same line of thought.

Don’t hasten, the doctor cautions her, Just softly and slowly…

As the entire room blurs and then come into focus for her, Yeva gasps. The light is dull, but even then it seems too bright for her vision.

People are standing there. Doctors, nurses and some others too, but majorly are beaming, smiling or just getting teary-eyed staring at her.

Hello Yeva, the person standing next to her waves before her. Can you see me? he makes two fingers.

    How many are these?

Two doctors, she says. There is a sniff and sob.

Can you see us? A bulky looking man says. A smile creeps up to her mouth.

I didn’t know you looked like that, Parwez –um-my lord!

He chuckles and comes to her side. The remaining crowd of gents, ladies and kids is instructed to go out of the room and wait for their turn. She doesn’t recognize any of them by face, Parwez says, only their voice is their identity for her. She needs some space. Relieved and talking, they make their way out of the room. It’s a huge room, she thinks and can accommodate all of them but as they leave, her nerves settle down a bit. Her throat is itchy and choked because of unnamed emotion. The crowd disperses but a lone figure of a child stands in the doorway of the room.

    Mom?

Yeva’s heart tightens in her chest. Trying not to tear up, she opens her arms and beckons the child to her side. Come here, my heart, my pride, that voice of him was enough to make her identify him.

Mommy? he trods slowly towards her, Uncle Oma says you can see. Can you see me, mommy?

Parwez takes the young prince in his arms and settles him in his mother’s lap. Unable to control the thrill, joy and warmth pouring in her at her child’s nearness, Yeva sees Parwez clicking his tongue.

You shouldn’t be crying, girl, he says, You’ll just make yourself ill and your eyes red again.

I can’t control it, she says, I am seeing him for the first time, my lord. she embraces Omar tightly, ruffling his hair and letting her tears fall freely on them, as she keeps her cheeks against his head.

The king is right, Princess, Doctor cautions her again, You shouldn’t cry. It’s not good for eyes.

Nodding, she lets Parwez dab her cheeks with a tissue while Omar lets out a soft snore in her arms.

Hey! Big guy, she whispers. Puzzled but concerned, she stares at Parwez, "He is sleeping. Is he ok?’

He’s hasn’t slept properly for so many days. Says he’s been having some bad dreams, Parwez pats him on the back, He missed you,

Oh dear! she sighs and pats his back all the same.

I hope her highness is not crying too much. It’s not good for her eyes and- the person enters the room, - a beautiful lady doesn’t look good with teary eyes,

    *******

He is not some dark and dangerous person. He is not particularly a looker too. Of course, before the king, he looks like someone who is always open to every friendly hug and maybe suggestion. Yeva looks at the man wearing the white coat and draped in proper Doctor attire. There’s a smile on his face, which makes him feel safe, approachable and friendly. Unlike her brothers (it's only proper to call Parwez, Oma and Naeb her brothers and not brothers-in-law), he is not very intimidating. Green eyes and athletic built, a walk full of confidence and a sensuous mouth.

    Yeva gasps!

    But his face?

    Good, God!

    That face!

Sheesh! Get a grip on yourself. Mother of a child and lusting after a stranger? Yeva?

I got to know that our patient is awake, her eyes are working just fine and she’s tearing up because of her reunion with her family. Not done princess, don’t ruin your vision once again,

He takes her hand in his and electricity sizzles between them both. Almost shocked, jolted and shaken, she leaves his hand and he does the same. Did he feel it too?

My king, he bows before the ruler, I hope we proved useful to you and that you are happy with our services.

Certainly, Doctor Parwez smiles but the smile doesn't reach his eyes. There's a quizzical frown on his face. There is also shock. There was a hint of it before he masked it. Clearing his throat, he shakes the man's hand. Shall we complete the hospital formalities?

Certainly sir, he smiles and looks at her as well. Yeva looks down and soothes her sleeping son again.

And, the man says, You can take the young prince with you too. I believe, now that the mommy is well, he’s going to have a blissful sleep.

Yeva loosens her hold on Omar’s as Parwez scoops him up in his arms.

Thank you, your highness, Yeva bows in her position. No matter how frank they
