    One.

    One more.

    One more.

Keeping the bottle glued to his lips, trying not to think too much about his life, Prince Oma-ul-Aham looks ahead to the road and nearly misses a truck by inches. His green eyes are staring ahead but his brain is numb. Hands tightening on the steering wheel, his vision gets clouded again with that image.

Parwez and Quang together and their newborn triplet boys lying in the cradle...Quang looking at Parwez with so much adoration...Parwez greeting everyone and finally kissing his wife, while people are applauding…

Smiling and shaking his head, Oma takes another gulp from his bottle. He didn’t mean to. He didn’t mean to get envious of his brother’s happiness but today’s event certainly made him...off.

If she was alive, he would’ve known the feeling too. If she wasn’t the deceiving bitch she was, he would’ve known his boys in the same manner.

The scene is so clear. As if, he has gone back in time to witness it again. Mya’s face before him. Eyes gazing at him with horror, while her lover lies next to her in the puddle of blood. He died before her. Sadly, he wanted to kill her in the end. He wanted her to see her dead lover but things didn’t go that way. Rahim was looking at his lover’s arm and his gaze touched Oma just once before he-

    Honk! Honk!

Oma doesn’t get enough time to think. Just missing the truck by inches, the force of the strong rock jolts him. The crunch of the wall going down is hardly considered by him as he sees the abyss his car is heading into.

    *******

    Three days later…

    Day 1

    Mom! Mom!

The loud shouting right next to his ear almost deafens him.

    Ayaan? What is it?

It’s the dark man. He’s moving.

I’ll see him, comes another voice.

Zubair? Are you there? Is Waqas there too?

The tinkering of the anklets follows these commands. Irritated and trying hard to remove the fog from his eyes, the dark man aka Oma-ul-Aham opens his eyes and looks sideways only to be greeted by six curious eyes.

    He groans a little.

    Here, open up. Suck these,

Something cool hits the tongue. A cool licked trickles down his throat and Oma wants to moan with delight. It feels as if he’s been chewing sawdust till now. His tongue feels heavy.

    What-

Sshh, soothes the child’s voice, It’s going to be ok. Mom is giving you her magic cookie-

Ay, says a female voice this time, Why don’t you three go out and wait? Nurse and I will take care of him,

He looks mean. What if he hurts you?

Zubair! Watch your tongue, little one,

    But ma-

Enough, the female is chiding them, Go out.

Something is inserted near his arm. Crying out a little and then feeling the sting ebbing, Oma looks sideways again, his vision darkens.

    *****

    Day 2

It’s not the room or the nurse tending his arm. Not even his idiotic condition catches him off guard. It’s her. That woman. Hair tied in a messy knot, eyebrows scrunched, applying something somewhere on his body.

Something about that face is so...relaxing! Peaceful!

Don’t move. the hand of the lady covers his. The shock of awareness jolts him awake.

    Who are you?

My lord, she says, calmness coating her voice. She’s wiping his neck with a cloth. She looks at him and smiles.

I am a poor woman of your country, she bows her head and dips the cloth in the bowl again.

    Where am I?

"At my house. You were in an accident. Some forest rangers were on the round fortunately and found your car destroyed. They took you out before your vehicles erupted into flames. They brought you here. My cottage is the nearest thing to the forest.

    ****

    Oma

    After one week.

He’d had no contact with his family till now. The lady, Nafisa, told him yesterday that one week has passed by. He told Ruksat, his secretary, about the accident.

Are you ok sir? Everyone in the castle is quite worried. Did you tell them too? Do you want me to inform them?

Rukhsat-Rukhsat! he sighed, Slow down girl. You’re making my head spin. Yes, I am ok. No. I didn’t contact any of them. That’s why I called you. You can tell them I am ok. The doctor has asked me to rest for another week or two. As soon as I have the clearance, I shall let you know,

And if they want to come and meet you?

Look, I don’t know the name of the village. It’s somewhere in Aham. Leave that. Just tell them.

Yesterday, your car was retrieved, Sir. Your accident was everywhere in the news too.

I saw that. I am calling from a landline. My phone, car and everything else is shattered and broken, which includes my leg bone too.

There was some more of her fretting and finally, he ended the call. Currently, sitting in a wheelchair, he’s staring towards the garden. The boy, Zubair, whose chocolate brown eyes are always curious brought him outside.

    And thank god for that!

In all these days, he’d been following the same routine. Getting up in the morning, doing mouthwash(courtesy Nafisa), changing clothes, having his meals and medicines and well, just going in and out of sleep because of not being able to get out of that damned bed.

And yes, also making some futile attempts of not noticing his very alluring and seductive hostess.

    Nafisa Khan.

Apart from that first day, she hadn’t spoken to him much. Only during his rare baths has he heard her opening about herself. She’s a teacher in the village’s school and her three boys, Waqas, Zubair and Ayaan, stay with her. Ayaan is the eldest, Zubair, the middle one and Waqas, the younger boy. No mention of husband!

She’s a single mother, she said. No expansion on that topic was a sign that she didn’t want to talk about that. That day in the bathroom, just as she got up to pack up their conversation, she lost her balance. She fell straight in the tub and his lap. Later, he would summarise his actions as the influence of medicines or some other excuse will do, but it seemed kissing her then and there was compulsory. She was so small and fit perfectly against his huge build. His arms were around her waist and his lips brushed accidentally against her.

    Sweet Lord!
