    About the author

    Foreword

Since 2015, I have been travelling throughout Quebec and French-speaking Canada, in person and virtually, to educate and empower the people I have the privilege to meet along the way. I noticed that I was often asked similar questions during my workshops, including this one: Annie, how will I retain all this beautiful information once I get home? It was during a workshop I was giving in 2019 in Bouchette, in the northern Outaouais region of my native Quebec, that I had a true breakthrough that led me to create this guide for you.

I want to thank the young mother, Rachel, who asked me this question that I was hearing for the umpteenth time. That day I asked myself, What could I do that would be helpful to people, after my workshops? What practical tips could I pass on to them right off the bat, that they could access quickly?

Then I remembered how I felt in 2015 when I received my essential oil and health kit. At the time, I was overwhelmed and overtaken by life’s events, so much so, that I thought I was having a panic attack!

Luckily, I had some calming essential oils to help me!

Despite my training in aromatherapy and my knowledge of how to make a few products, I wondered what I was going to do, in practice, with all this.

So, for those of you who, like me, have felt overwhelmed, I offer this lovingly written guide to help you navigate the difficult moments with a little more gentleness. I believe that awareness, prevention, and education are the keys to a more balanced life.

This practical guide presents 20 blends and essential oils, as well as simple and effective recipes to treat many small hurts in everyday life.

Let essential oils help you regain your vitality and a better balance in your life. You will be pleasantly surprised to see their benefits, whether small or large.

    With kindness,

    Annie

    Introduction to Essential Oils

We often hear that essential oils are natural or gifts from the earth, but what does that really mean? Where do essential oils really come from? How are they made? That’s what we’ll explore, in this first part.

    A) What they are

Hundreds of thousands of different plants cover the planet Earth, playing a vital role in animal and human life, by producing oxygen. They also provide food, regulate water quality, create habitats, etc. There is a wide variety of plant types, species, and families. Each plant has characteristics that make it useful for specific purposes.

Essential oils are the aromatic components of certain plants. Depending on the type and structure of the plant, essential oils can be found in their different parts. For example, in some plants, the essential oil is found in the flowers, while others contain essential oils in the leaves or bark.

No matter what part of the plant these essential oils are a part of, they play an important role, as they can perform many functions. Often, it is the essential oils that give a plant its aroma. They can also have defensive properties that protect it, keeping insects and herbivores away.

For example, several studies have been done to see how terpenes in citrus peels affect the interaction between the plant, insects, and microorganisms. Plants use volatile terpene compounds as olfactory signals to communicate with their environment. Fleshy fruits are particularly rich in volatile compounds that deter herbivores and attract seed dispersers.

Essential oils also play an important role in the pollination of plants and in their reproduction processes. They can even help a plant to heal itself when injured.

Remember that not all plants produce essential oils and not all essential oils in their parts necessarily demonstrate significant benefits to humans. They may be volatile compounds that are useful to the plant only, as discussed above.

The result of the extraction of these delicate aromas is what we call: Essential oils. The oils presented in this guide
