    Corey stood in the doorway, watching his friend run long fingers through thick, ice-white hair. Adrian’s head hung down as he carefully separated the twisted strands, a particular point of his grooming Corey never quite understood. Adrian’s hair would tangle as soon as Adrian flipped his hair back.

    As expected, Adrian flipped his head back, and the length seemed to knot on its own. When Adrian turned around, he didn’t appeared overly surprised to see Corey there.

    Why do you bother? Corey asked him.

    Adrian shrugged. Don’t know; I just do. How long have you been there?

    Long enough to make Jacob and the girls wonder what happened to us, Corey said. He remained standing in the doorway as Adrian fished through the jumble of spare change and such to find his house keys.

    I’m ready, Adrian said as he shoved his keys into the pocket of his jeans and slipped his jacket on.
