A New Legacy - Karl Anders

    Chapter 1

Hillary James was unhappy about the security arrangements as he walked around the ballroom hosting the reception for the rare book auction that was scheduled for tomorrow. He only saw one uniformed guard. How could they possibly keep safe the rare, 13 th Century illuminated manuscript that he was offering for sale?

Trevor Kane approached him. He was an imposing figure, towering almost eight inches over Hillary’s five foot seven. Kane possessed eyes that seemed to pierce you to your very soul, taking a measure of it and finding it wanting.

I’m very disappointed that you wouldn’t take my generous offer, Hillary.

Hillary was miffed by Kane’s superior attitude. He had dealings with him before when Hillary had procured some other rare texts. There has been a lot of interest in it by a few parties. I had received two offers greater than yours and I didn’t want to get into a bidding war at the shop, so the auction seemed the best way to take care of that. I can’t fully value it because there are areas that I haven’t been able to translate. This way, whoever wants it can have it at a value they believe it is worth.

Kane bristled at Hillary’s reticence to allow him to have the manuscript he desired. You should have let me know the highest offer, I would have more than matched it. Hopefully, you won’t be disappointed, James.

Kane stormed off and exited the hall. Hillary’s thoughts about him were shattered by a high-pitched sound and bright lights that forced him to his knees as did the rest of the people in the hall. Luckily, he wasn’t looking directly at the flash-bang grenade when it went off, so he just saw bright lights behind his eyelids. His ears were assaulted by a lot of white noise. His nose immediately felt funny like he lost his sense of smell.

Hillary was jostled by people trying to escape the mayhem while not being able to see. Others were writhing on the floor, obviously in more agony than some. Hillary stumbled into more than one as he was jostled around. He almost fell to the floor when a strong hand gripped his arm and dragged him to the side of the hall in relative protection.

His eyes watered and he still saw flashes of light, not to mention he couldn’t smell anything. All he could tell was the man seemed to be slightly taller than he was and was trying to say something to him. The man moved off after motioning Hillary to stay where he was.

After a few minutes, Hillary’s vision and hearing started to return. He noticed that quite a few others were still on the floor. The man returned shortly and asked in a muffled voice, Are you able to see a little?

Hillary nodded and looked at the man. It was like looking at a fogged mirror, but from what he could make out, the man looked pretty handsome. He sported long black hair tied back in a ponytail.

I’m Dominic L’Enfant. I manage the hotel. Sit here while you recover.

Dominic helped Hillary to a nearby chair. Hillary was able to make out more details about his rescuer. Dominic had what Hillary would call a strong face. His chin was broad and hard. Dominic’s cheekbones were defined but not overly sharp. Hillary’s vision was not sharp enough to tell the color of Dominic’s eyes yet. Hillary finally settled on aristocratic.

Was it a theft? Hillary managed to ask finally.

Dominic took a little while before he could determine what the man in front of him was asking since he was still suffering from hearing loss due to the grenade.

Yes, the books in the main display were taken.

Hillary became agitated. They took my manuscript.

    It appears so.

Dominic studied Hillary’s face, taking in the fine cheekbones and red hair that suggested an Irish origin. His tastes didn’t normally run that way, preferring more rugged men that reflected his own image but there was something about this man that drew him in.

Yes, I have people reviewing the recordings at this moment. We’ll ...

Chase Wharton strode up and interrupted Dominic, touching his back to get his attention. It was those jackals we spied earlier, Chase said, ending in a growl.

Dominic hissed, his eyes seemed to turn a reddish color. He looked at Chase, That explains the grenade then. Have you traced them?

Still working on it. I’ll keep you posted, Chase replied and walked off.

My manuscript was estimated to bring almost two million by the auction company. I was uncomfortable that there wasn’t enough security.

Chase’s men were dispersed in the crowd. Unfortunately, they were disabled by the grenade more than they should have been. It appears to have been modified specifically for this gathering.

Hillary glanced around and notice some people still writhing on the floor. "Is help coming for these
