Story of 1893 Mint Robbery Full of Intrigue

“The audacity of the robbery of the Philadelphia Mint rivals any tales of the Wild West and the escapades of the Dalton Brothers, Younger Brothers or the James Boys,” reads the non-bylined thriller in the September 1964 issue of Coins magazine. “During the summer of 1893, extensive alterations were made in the building occupied by the Philadelphia Mint. The Mint had in its vaults between two and three hundred million dollars in gold bars and gold coins. After the renovations, this tremendous amount of money was moved under guard from one area of the building to another.

“In the process of transferring the bars and money, everything was carefully checked. Millions of dollars of gold coins in kegs, sacks, and boxes were handled and all records checked out perfectly until a certain compartment in the vault was reached.
