    FOREWORD

I grew up in church. One of the first photographs I have of my parents and me, after we emigrated to the U.S., is of the three of us in front of a church. I was eight months old. God’s promises were whispered to me in Korean.

It has been years since I regularly attended church. I was decolonizing my faith before the process of untangling my faith from Western cultural norms had a label, but I am still a Christian, a believer, a follower of Jesus. I still hear and sit with God’s promises, albeit while also asking a lot more questions for God. I am starting to feel like it might be time to step back into a church building, but the desire has nothing to do with programming, the quality of musical worship, or even the charisma of the preacher.

It is to be with other people who believe in, have heard and spoken of, and hope for the ridiculous promises of God, especially when I am tired or hopeless. Just this week, my mom, who is in her mid-70s, and dad, who is in his early 80s, attended Holy Week sunrise prayer services at church, and they reminded me they prayed for my family and me. That is what being in a family of faith is like—someone somewhere is always praying for you, praying with you, even when you cannot find the words let alone the energy to get up before the sun.

The authors of The Timing of Everything PROMISED are part of my family of faith. I only know one of the authors, but in their words, I found myself sitting with sisters generous with their honesty and unflinching testimony of faith. They whisper and boldly proclaim God’s promises without ignoring disappointment and heartache and without overplaying joy and healing.

Pull up a chair with a blanket and your beverage of choice. Soak in their words and take your time with their wise stories. You may find yourself recalling promises you thought you or God had forgotten.

~Kathy Khang, author of Raise Your Voice and co-author of Loving Disagreement.

    Introduction

Has God ever fulfilled a promise in your life? Have you ever experienced the joy of a promise fulfilled by God? No matter how your present circumstances look, there is a promise in the Word of God for your particular situation. No matter what we face, God’s promises will always outweigh what may seem hopeless or unattainable.

God does much of His work in secret. According to His divine plan for our individual lives, He will often work in others who are part of our story to fulfill His promises.

Many theologians agree there are over 8,000 promises written in the Bible, and the wonderfully staggering reality is that we can daily count and see the myriad of God’s promises fulfilled in our lives. That possibility should excite you! It certainly does me.

Eight women have lent their voices to this work. Throughout this book, God’s promises to heal, provide, restore, comfort, rescue, protect, call, encourage, and love us are written into each story. In many ways, each writer’s life story mirrors those of the women from the pages of the Old and New Testament.

Rahab, whose lifestyle had plunged her to the lowest depth of society, was part of God’s plan to bring His people to victory. There’s Naomi, widowed, sorrowful, and uncertain of her future, yet not alone because of the love of a God who provided for her through the faithful loyalty of her daughter-in-law. Deborah, the Judge, was called to serve in a capacity that had for ages been reserved for men only. Still, her fearless response to step in gave yet another victory for Israel. Esther was equally brave in her own right, standing strong in the face of personal losses, hard questions, and threats for her people. Mary learned to be content to rest and be taught by Jesus rather than letting daily distractions lure her away. Finally, there’s Lydia, the businesswoman who came to understand how to bless the church and ministry of Paul with her finances. Like the women throughout the Bible and the women who have contributed to this anthology, all of them have at one time or another desired—needed—the impossible and improbable to happen in their lives. Each may have wept, wailed, or wondered about their
