SILVER AND RECON
Provisions are low!
Fanger hollered from the back of the MTRV. We’re dang near out of whiskey.
How’s the ammo looking?
I hollered back at him.
Same as when we got here, Lick. We ain’t shot shit in days.
Fanger sat down in the passenger seat and stared at me.
I cranked the engine and drove up to the paved road. Me and Fanger both leaned into the window and looked left. Them big ass lights in the sky still hovered in the distance. Even in daylight they shined bright as shit. I turned the wheel to the right and said, I reckon that little jewelry store in Treeboro has some silver.
Fanger gave me a nod and leaned back in his seat. Treeboro was only about twenty minutes away. We hauled ass, not wanting to waste any time. Silver bullets were our top priority since we didn’t know when them nasty Maybelle Turner werewolves might pop up next. We spot checked the black ooze situation when we was strategizing the phases. Me and Fanger both figured we had enough black ooze caked up under the MTRV to get us through the silver hunting and recon phases of the plan. But we damn sure needed to stock up on that black ooze shit before the final phase. The snatch and grab.
Along the way, we didn’t see shit. No naked aliens. No people. Nothing. When we got to the edge of Treeboro I eased off the gas. Better take it slow.
I said, looking around at the town in front of us.
You see that?
Fanger said, sitting up in his seat.
What?
Sumpin’ just whizzed past the winder.
Fanger drew his pistol off his right hip and held it with both hands. That’s it. Right there.
Fanger pointed with his pistol, moving it along the windshield.
I sat my beer down, grabbed the steering wheel with both hands and pulled myself close to windshield. Holy shit. I do see sumpin’.
Let’s shoot it down.
Fanger yanked on the door handle.
I reached down the right side of my seat and grabbed my shotgun, watching as Fanger walked around the front of the vehicle. When he got to my side, I pushed the door open, twisted my feet out the door and stood up on the step. Holding my shotgun with both hands, I jumped down to the ground, bouncing my knees to cushion my landing.
One o’clock,
Fanger said without looking at me.
Whatever that thang was, it was keeping its distance. It bobbed up and down in the air about a hundred feet away. Fanger raised his pistol and took aim, and the damn thang flew higher in the air.
I raised my shotgun to my shoulder, popped off a shot and whatever it was blew into pieces and dropped to the ground. Fanger took off running. I followed behind him several paces, keeping my distance with my trigger fanger on ready.
It’s a drone,
Fanger hollered back at me.
