A Temporary Maid

Good morning, Chloe, please take a seat. I won’t be a moment.

Chloe smiled at the man behind the desk and sat down on the chair in front of it as he returned to his phone call. Instead of watching him, she stared at the logo painted on the wall behind him. The circular design encompassed both his and the company name and she realised it also contained a stylised but very accurate relief profile of the man himself.

Only Simon Ironsides would put his own face on his agency logo!

She almost chuckled out loud, but caught herself just in time, which turned out to be perfect timing too, as Simon said his goodbyes and hung up on his call.

Well, Chloe, what are we going to find for you now?

A job, perhaps?

Chloe smiled to take the sting out of her comment, and was relieved when he chuckled. She’d been on the books of his employment agency for three months now, and all he’d been able to find her were temporary slots as secretaries and receptionists. With six years prior experience as a PA to a senior vice-president of a large company, she was desperate to get back to the level of earnings she’d had before the recession kicked in.

Simon’s face became serious and he shook his head.

Chloe, I wish I could, you’re one of the best we have on our books, but there’s just no permanents out there. Not at your level. What few jobs are going are being chased by hundreds of applicants. It’s a jungle, believe me. A total jungle.

So, you’ve got nothing, then?

He spread his hands expansively and shook his head.

Sorry, sweetie, nothing on the permanent side. Nothing really for you on the temporary side, either. The last two temp secretarial positions were the two you filled last week.
