    Foreword

Iceland is breathtaking! A country in which you feel as if you have been transported to another worldly planet, or more accurately, other worldly planets!

After returning from one of the most unique and memorable experiences of my life, I have had so many people ask for more information and details about the trip.  I decided that the best way to share my adventure was to capture the itinerary that I travelled for all to enjoy, and hence the book you are about to read.

My hope is that my journey can be a foundation or a template for yours! No two adventures are the same, and I encourage you to create your upcoming trip so it can be as personal and meaningful to you, as this was to me.  There are many ways to travel and see this beautiful land, and this itinerary is just one of those ways.

I look forward to hearing about your adventure and seeing the memories you will create.

    The Route

This is the route that we followed for the trip. For the most part, it follows the main Iceland Ring Road (Route 1) and includes most of the island.  If a few more days had allowed in our schedule, a visit to the Northeastern and Northwestern fjords would have been on the list. The trip started and ended in Reykjavik, and we travelled the route anti-clockwise.  From what we could tell there is no benefit or draw-back to taking the route in either direction.

Day 1: Arrival & The Capital

    Getting Started/Arrival

Most flights from Europe and the US will land in Reykjavík, the Capital City of Iceland. This is a small airport, but very clean and functional. Upon arrival and luggage claim we took the shuttle bus that leaves from right outside the terminal to pick up the rental car.

There are many ways to travel around Iceland.  Camper van rental seems to be very popular, and there are a lot to choose from as far a size, but we had opted for a traditional car rental with overnight stays.

Choose a reputable rental car company.  Rental cars in Iceland are not cheap, but you will need to rely on your transportation working in some remote areas. While price was a factor to be considered, quality and reliability ranked far higher in our choice. Well known and Icelandic companies are all located at the airport such as National
