    CHAPTER 1

At age five, Lucky was raised in an unstable household with a mother who was strung out on crack cocaine.

Ms. Eve, who lives across the street in the trailer park, takes Lucky under her wing and cares for her as best she can. One day, Lucky is repeatedly raped by her mother’s clients. This leads to Sanya’s arrest. Ms. Eve then takes Lucky into her household with her three sons and daughter, Lacey. She raised her as one of her own. Lucky finally finds happiness with her new family.

Then they get hit with the news that she has a grandmother and father who live in Atlanta, GA., and is on the way to get her.

Lucky’s world turns dark and uncertain all over again.

Unhappy and uprooted, she realizes that her grandmother hates her as much as her mom does. Lucky begins to fight back, not allowing anyone to hurt her again.

Sanya, hurry up and cook the damn shit up! What the fuck is taking your ass so long? Spook yelled from the bedroom.

Girl! Don’t fuck with me; I just burned my damn hand on this shite. Sanya yelled back.

Mom, I’m hungry! I want to eat, but my stomach hurts. Lil Lucky said, standing beside her mom at the stove.

Girl, move. You know I have to turn a trick before I can buy you something to eat. I will be so glad when you can turn tricks of your own. Go outside until I call you. Sanya said, returning to the stove and trying to rock up some cocaine. Lucky ran out of the front door and sat on the porch. I’m not going to eat; she always says that and never goes and gets any food. Lucky got up and ran across the street, almost getting hit by a car. She was going by her friend Lacey and Ms. Eve’s trailer house. A lucky knock on the door and Ms. Eve answers it. Lucky, didn’t I tell you about running across that busy street by yourself? And this trailer park isn’t safe for little girls running around. Come in here.

    I’m hungry, Lucky said.

    Where is Sanya?

In the kitchen, cooking up that white stuff.

That’s a damn shame. She can cook up drugs but can’t cook her child some food. Go in there and play with Lacey until I cook you all something to eat.

Roy, that is not right how she treats that child.

I told you, you must call the child protection people on her ass. She is going to wind up killing that baby over there. You can see that she doesn’t care about her. Lucky stays outside all hours of the night. Sanya’s crackhead friends and tricks will run through there all day and night. I’m surprised that the police have not come through there yet. Mom, if it wasn’t for you feeding that baby, I don’t think she would ever eat.

Lord, I’m going to have to pray about this situation; I don’t know how I could live with myself if something happened to that child. I know one thing: Sanya is making the block hot for all of us. We have too much shit in the back to have the police snooping around, and with all that shit going on over there, they will eventually come. Mom, the trailer is full of guns and drugs back there, and Turk and they have not come to pick it up yet. Something will have to be done about her ass, John voices.

Well, you all need to get that up and out of there because there is nothing that can be done about Sanya right now. I just wish I could take the damn baby away from her ass. The children walk around here dirty, barefoot, and hungry. This doesn’t make any sense. I will go through Lacey’s stuff today and see what I can find for her. That child needs some shoes. Ms. Eve said, fixing their food.

And even if you could, mom, what the hell are you going to do with a black baby? Roy chimed.

Love her. I don’t see any color. All I see is a human being. A baby, and besides, she is bi-racial—half white and half black. Don’t you see it in her eyes? Her eyes are gray.

Either way, mom. It would be hard for you to try and raise her. Roy said, getting up from the table."

After they ate, Ms. Eve told them to play in the back room for a little while, and then she would walk Lucky back across the street. Ms. Eve went into her room to read her Bible.

Across the street, Sanya, Spook, and Lynn were in the back room, smoking up some crack cocaine. Do y’all know where I can sell a baby? I can’t take care of her. I can barely take care of myself. And I bet I could get a lot of money for her, she said, blowing smoke out of her mouth. You should wait until she gets a little older, and then you can let her turn your tricks, lay back, and collect all the money. I was going to let Bre and Jean turn tricks for me, but the state took them before I could. Lynn expressed.

I’m thinking about it because the pussycat isn’t selling as it used to. I’m sure I could make a fortune off of her. Sanya replied as she was pulling off the pipe.

    BOOM!

What the fuck was that? Spook inquired, getting up and running to the window.

Somebody ran over someone out there. All of them ran outside.

Damn. Where is Lucky? I told her to stay on the porch. Sanya said as she went to see what was happening in the middle of the street. Somebody had run over a kid on a bike. He was lying on the ground, looking like his leg was broken.

Lucky, Sanya was screaming now. She spotted her standing across the street in front of the trailer park.

How many times have I told your ass to stay out of that trailer park. She grabbed hold of her arm and yanked her across the street.

Ain’t nothing going to happen to her over here. Now over there is another story, Ms. Eve was saying. You know what! Your ass is always in somebody’s business. You need to get some business of your own. Sanya said, jerking Lucky across the street.

I need to whip your ass. Get in the damn house, go to your room, and don’t leave until I tell you. Snoop, run to the store and get some chips, a candy bar, and a soda for her ass. Sanya gave her five dollars. I’m going to go, but bitch don’t smoke all of the crack. And then again, I will get my shit before I go to the damn store. Spook voiced, running back into the room to get her pipe. Sanya slammed the door to Lucky’s room. Lucky crawled and laid down on her bed. Two hours later, Spook came back and brought her the snacks. She opened the door, threw them on the bed, and ran out. Lucky got up, ate her food, and fell back to sleep. The house was filthy, with rats and roaches crawling everywhere. The bathroom and kitchen were the worst. It was not fit for a human being to be living in it. Sanya is from Atlanta, GA; she lived there with her mom, Kim, and Stepdad, Rock. Kim came home from work one day and caught Sanya and Rock having sex. She didn’t want anything to do with them anymore. She evicted 16-year-old Sanya from her house. She did not know Rock had impregnated Sanya. Sanya brought her a bus ticket to New Orleans, LA, and took to the streets, working as a prostitute in the French Quarters. She was doing well for herself. She met Richard, who took her off the streets and brought her to a small house on Derby Street. But she did not know that Richard was a married man, and when his wife found out about Sanya, Richard had to leave her alone or lose his family. Sanya had just had Lucky, a beautiful black curly head gray eyes baby. And she didn’t have any money to take care of them, so she returned to working in the streets. Everything started to stress her out. So, she hooked up with Spook and Lynn, and they were making a lot of money, but Spook and Lynn did drugs, which they turned over to Sanya. Sanya got hooked on crack cocaine. She started spending the money she made on drugs and bird-feeding the baby. In the midst of her getting high, her daughter was almost raped. So now she keeps her tricks from going in the back of the house. Life went from good to bad for her. But, these days, she forgets that Lucky is even alive. Her drug habit has taken over her and her life.

What happened, James? Ms. Eve asked, wrapping a towel around his arm. Blood was dripping everywhere.

I was robbed; they jumped out of the van on my ass. I’ve seen those little black boys running around here trying to join a gang; I’ve even seen them before. They got my two grands; I will beat the shite out of their asses. James was sitting at the table.

I don’t want you to hurt any kids out there; let them have that. They must need it real bad if they are out there like that. Eve was saying.

John, she called, Take your brother to the hospital; his arm needs some stitches.

Ms. Eve has three sons and a daughter. James, John, Roy, and Lacey Her husband, Bob, was killed in a motorcycle accident. The Eve family has always been in the motorcycle gang called the Legions, which means men with many evil spirits. They are into drugs, drug trafficking, prostitution, gambling, and gun trafficking. The Legion has one of the biggest drug rings on the east side of New Orleans. James, John, Roy Rex, Bow, Turk, Randy, Samson, Hank, Dan, Dirk, and Frank
