It was the last day of school before the summer break kicked off and Shanna probably was the only one who had heard the teacher yell be safe and have a good summer as the bell rang. Shanna was a nice girl, good looking, and very intelligent for a sixteen year old. All the guys in the neighborhood watched over her and provided material needs, because of her family’s position. She looked up to them as big brothers, except for one, her next door neighbor Rakim who was nineteen; her feelings for him were different. She had been attracted to him ever since they were young kids; he never knew it, but in her own mind she was his women.

Her mother was on drugs and since she didn’t get high every day, Ms. Hardaway considered herself a casual smoker. Over a three year period she had worked four jobs: grocery store, telemarketing, chicken plant from which she caught capo tones and her recent job as a maid cleaning rooms. Shanna’s father, James was a truck driver; living in the Queen City, with nothing more on his mind but his first family. He paid his child support honestly, sometimes more then what he had too, but what he really lacked was spending time, which he’d promise his self he soon would do.

The very moment Shanna stepped on the school bus she heard TD’s loud mouth sounding off over everyone else’s. TD was a local small time nickel dime dealer who sold drugs to Ms. Hardaway, and Shanna despised him for that. As Shanna began scanning the crowded bus for a seat, she noticed Lisa with a seat by herself. Lisa, who had failed short on credits and would repeat the tenth grade didn’t want to be bothered, so the second Shanna asked, May I have a seat? A quick reply came Your best move is to get up out of my face, Yea I said it, just keep it moving, Lisa stated as she followed up with a stiff arm. Shanna tried slapping her hand away but accidentally tapped her in the face. Lisa reacted with a vicious swing and when Shanna tried to counteract, TD grabbed her arms, allowing his sister to follow up with a swarm of blows. Nobody better put their hands on my sister! He yelled.

When Shanna walked into the house she headed straight to her room trying to avoid her mom who was on the telephone, but minutes later her mom walked into her room anyway. Oh, you just gonna walk into this house and don’t speak . . . . I just got off the phone with James, he wants to know if you would like to spend the summer with him. No thank you, Shanna replied. Girl, this is an opportunity for you to spend time with your daddy… . Hold up . . . . What happened to your face? Ms. Hardaway asked? Nothing Shanna replied with an attitude. Since you want to lie to me I’m sending your tail to stay with James anyway, so pack some cloths cause you catching the train first thing in the morning. Shanna tried pleading with her mother, until she had cried herself to sleep only to wake up one hour later with everything still fresh on her mind, so the second she rolled off the bed she murmured why do I have to go down there with that fool… . Oh well, let me call Rakim. [phone ringing] Hello (A woman’s voice). Hey Ms. Rogers, is Rakim there… she replied No baby, you just missed him, he left about 30 minutes ago.

The following morning Shanna boarded the train in the Rock City, while listening to the sounds of Anthony Hamilton (Coming from where I’m from) on her
