    Chapter One

    Fear is the only thing I have ever known.

    Fear is everywhere, Ren.  Fear is the knowledge that we are still breathing. One day you will understand all of this, my mother would tell my every night before I went to sleep. It was a ritual: a bedtime story and a pep talk. Surprisingly, I never had nightmares just dreams of talking animals and having a house full of puppies. A huge house full of puppies.

    Ironically, there wasn’t anything to fear in Humanity, New York.  It was and has always been boring a little town, quiet, not artsy enough to be Beacon, too far from Manhattan for chic New Yorkers to invade. Humanity’s biggest crime was when  old lady Louise  shot her grandson in the foot before I was born.She went to jail for a whole thirty minutes. 

    Humanity was known for its nature trails, Edwardian-style housing, and an old inn in the center of town that George Washington himself was rumored to have walked in for a bowl of vegetable soup. That got us some tourists every now and then, but  Humanity was home,safe,and perpetually boring.

    I loved boring. I had a crush on boring.

    Yet my mother told me these stranger-dangers stories all the time. I mean it could have been worse ways to send a child off to dreamland. She could have  been one of those parents that made their kids recite the Declaration of Independence in French  and gave them flourless, chocolate-less ,sugar-less cookies and organic soy nonfat milk before they went to bed. Yeah, it could have been a lot, lot worse.

    Sleep well my big girl, you are safe, my mother said after  she had  kissed me on my forehead  and pulled the covers up to my chin.

    Mommy, will you leave the light on please, just this once? I asked embarrassed at the slight rise in my already munchkin-pitch  voice. My mother looked up smiling, but shook her head. She stuck her head into the hallway.
