About this ebook

“I stand and face the sea,
as the waves come crashing to the shore,
the music of the sea is thunderous and loud.
Yet I am unafraid, I chase the waves, I run about,
excited but calm, I want to explore, I only want more.”
—fifi coo, 11 June 2016

After eight years of quiet, fifi coo found his voice through the collective love of a family, the patience and resourcefulness of a mother, and a simple alphabet board. The board became the interface between fifi’s thoughts and the public world beyond him. With it, he speaks poetry.

How open are we to specialness in our lives? Open the door to the tiny spaces within you, and let in fifi coo’s inner light.

A note from fifi

For parents whose hearts are in deep sorrow, I only wish my poems will offer them hope and encouragement for themselves and for their child to one day find his/her voice.

For teachers, therapists and those who have a duty or a job to help special needs individuals lead a more fulfilling life, I hope my book will encourage them to explore new ways of teaching and to not label us as low functioning if we are non-verbal. I hope my book will also help them see that understanding autism cannot be based on theories and experiences with other non-verbal autistics. I hope my book makes them rethink what autism is about and that whatever questions they have about autism, the only person that can give them real answers will be the individual that they are trying to help.

For anyone else who might read my book, I hope they will hear inside my heart and hear my loneliness and experience what it is like to be a human person frequently misunderstood and trapped in a body that is not very functional. I hope I can be a lonely voice for all my non-verbal friends. We experience loneliness in a way that no one can ever understand unless they too lose their voices and have special needs.

a tiny space - Fifi Coo

    Outside

    27 April 2016

    No person will ever comprehend,

how hard it is when I hardly feel my hands.

    You won’t understand

why we sit for hours just sifting sand.

I only want to play in such a way,

to awaken my senses, it sometimes takes all day.

I need help, I need to be consoled,

trapped in a body I cannot control.

    17 February 2016

    Walking pleases my senses,

in ways many fail to understand.

Love and acceptance will help you comprehend,

that play only works in our own time, at our own pace.

    Diamond: fifi’s first beach outing

When fifi was very little, he disliked certain textures on his feet. Blades of grass were immensely uncomfortable for him, and he would curl his feet away from such sensations. Ramona and I one day decided that the perfect place for fifi was: the beach. It married his love for water and his discomfort with icky feet textures, and I was curious about how he would deal with this dilemma. We brought fifi to Pasir Ris beach, and packed a box of his favourite ginger biscuits and ribena. fifi was very excited when we arrived at the beach. He laughed and smiled and could not wait to reach the water. Running forward, I remember him stopping short for a moment, just as his feet touched the sand. He jumped up and down slightly, feet treading in and out of the grains for a while. I was curious about what he felt beneath his feet, and was imagining him thinking through his dilemma: to move forward towards the water, or to turn back towards his sisters? After just a few seconds, and armed with a cheeky grin, he let out a laugh and sprung forward. I watched as he skipped through the sand, cautiously at first, then picking up speed as he raced into the waves. I was so proud of him!

    Diamond: fifi’s best moments

fifi’s best moments come when he is happiest. These moments are fleeting, and yet they glow and ripple off into the hours that follow. When I recall these moments, I think of fifi sharing a connection with someone, laughing and playing his cheeky games. I also recall all the times fifi sat by himself, content, and doing whatever he wanted to. He would run around, tap, shout, laugh—fifi is happiest when he is allowed to be himself.

    People very pointedly

stop and stare at me, to satisfy

only their curiosity, so my problems magnify

without true understanding, I can only cry expressively.

    16 March 2016

    People watch us with disgust,

they think efforts should be in place,

to change impossible-to-change behaviours, we must

denounce ourselves to avoid everybody’s gaze.
