About this ebook
Today, Walt Whitman is considered one of America’s greatest poets. Known as the “father of free verse,” many poets have sought to emulate his style. Yet, Whitman was not always regarded so highly. In fact, when he first began writing his most celebrated work, Leaves of Grass, he faced a serious backlash, and the book was eventually banned in certain parts of America.
Walt Whitman was born on the cusp of 1820 to a family who had no money and very few prospects. Yet, Whitman did not let his humble beginning deter him. He worked his way up from a printer’s assistant to one of the greatest poets that Americans, and the world, have ever known. His story is not without its hardships, but then again, are any stories worth telling without them?
