    Introduction to

    Dr Rich Golf

    D

r Rich Golf was forged from a lifetime of golf, personal inquiry, and professional work. Throughout my 45-year career in psychiatry, I have learned how people can fundamentally change and grow. During 25 years of competing in marathon and triathlon, I gained a true understanding of how to mobilize performance psychology. For the past 50 years, I’ve thoughtfully engaged with meditation, mindfulness, and the study of Eastern philosophies, all of which provide invaluable skills that can help golfers of every level.

About fifteen years ago, the movie Caddyshack inspired me to establish the Dalai Lama Golf Association (DLGA) with a few of my golfing friends. At that time, there wasn’t much of a philosophical foundation to the group other than an occasional reference to one of the film’s greatest lines surrounding golf, All you need to do is to get in touch with the force that makes things happen. After a few years, I began to feel that there was something far more substantial to this line than some good humor. Inspired, I undertook a serious consideration of the tremendous potential I saw in golf’s ability to transform people’s lives. Thus began Dr Rich Golf as my avocation over the last ten years. I have since grown the enterprise through my own learning and working with many exceptional clients.

This book emerged from the testimonies, stories, and what the students of Dr Rich Golf found of value as they began to transform themselves and their golf game. Golf forces us to balance technical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions, all of which are addressed throughout this book’s chapters. Each short essay is designed to be read in any order. You may find value in absorbing them one at a time and allowing each to methodically settle into your mind. Regardless, some of the essays will cater toward the practical, while others are more thought provoking and geared toward catalyzing change.

These essays have applications for every age and every level of golfer. I wanted to create a book that would be easily digestible to all, regardless of skill or current ability. I have worked with aspiring Monday PGA qualifiers, golfers trying to move up their state rankings, as well as mid to high handicappers wanting to better their game and feel more comfortable on the Green. A growing category of Dr Rich Golf clients consists of aging golfers who are trying to figure out why they are continuing to play this game when they can’t hit the ball as long or score as low as they once did. In short, wherever you are in your golf journey is the accepted starting point, and you truly don’t even have to play golf to understand the lessons in this book, though it will likely be more engaging if you are familiar with golf, or with someone who is.

Just like the game itself, one quick run through of this book will not master its contents. My hope is that you may connect with a few of the provided sentiments that can make you a better golfer and… a better person. Furthermore, while some readers may find themselves more engaged with certain essays than others, I would like to encourage you to start with the first five chapters and then explore any contents
