About this ebook

Second Edition - How many ways are there to swing a golf club? Golf magazine writers and TV commentators certainly don't have a shortage of golf swings to analyze. So, I suppose we will never know the answer. This all creates a certain amount of confusion for the average golfer who is trying to improve their swing. After years of frustrating golf and countless swing changes, I thought that there must be a simpler way to look at the golf swing. Rather than look at all the differences, I wondered instead if there was something that all good golfers do that the average golfer generally does not. Anyone that is serious about golf certainly needs to learn the fundamentals, but what I was looking for had more to do with what I call "The Principles of Triangulation." Although inherent to all good golf swings, these principles are rarely given priority when it comes to golf analysis. I believe they are at the heart of every good golf swing and at the core of every good golf shot. Inside your will find a thorough explanation of these principles along with illustrations and drills to help you apply them to your swing. Additional subjects include how to reduce tension, creating lag and how to start the downswing, the difference between a one-plane swing and a two-plane swing and why you should never change your natural way of swinging.

This second edition continues beyond the first in that it provides the average golfer with more of an in-depth approach to game improvement. New chapters discuss game management, fine-tuning your swing, the mental aspects of the game, increasing accuracy and distance, biomechanics and much more. The Principles of Triangulation have improved my game and I sincerely hope they do the same for yours.

    Acknowledgments

First, I would like to thank my good buddy, Bob Poniatowski, whose willingness to help develop and prove out the ideas in this book is only exceeded by his patience.

A special thanks goes out to my wife Barbara; for this book would not exist without her generous help, and encouragement.

I would also like to thank all those that reviewed the material and provided valuable feedback before this book was published.

    Forward

The National Golf Federation is a trusted trade association that each year compiles information and insights on the business of golf. The following statistics were extracted from those reports. There are approximately 36 million golfers in the United States of which about 22% can break 90 on a regulation length course (whatever that is). The breakdown is 7% for women and 25% for men. The average score for women is 114 and 97 for men. When asked what score they would like to shoot, the answer most given by both men and women was 85 or 86. In order for that to happen men would have to improve by 11 or 12 strokes and women by many more. Ironically, these numbers have essentially stayed the same for the last 100 years.

Scores for average golfers are actually a little higher after eliminating professional golfers (those that play in tournaments and get paid) and amateur golfers (those that play in tournaments and don’t get paid) from the 36 million.

Bogey Golf (an average of one over par for each hole) or around 90 would seem like a reasonable goal with all the modern equipment, instruction books, videos, teaching aids, and instructors that are available today. Yet, less than one quarter of all golfers achieves or is going to achieve that level. To make matters worse, golf participation has declined steadily since 2007 despite a net increase in golf facilities.

Is the issue that average golfers are not getting the proper instruction or is it that they are not taking the time to improve themselves or is it that golf is not fun anymore? I would surmise any of the above to be true.

Golf participation may be down, but it continues to be one of the most widely played games in the world. This in all probability is attributed to the fact that at any given moment an average golfer can perform just like a professional. Even for the average golfer a par, birdie or eagle is not out of the question.

Most people play games for one of two reasons - either to have fun or to win. While most anyone is capable of playing golf, the fact is that it is a tough game. Playing the game at a higher than average level requires more than just learning swing basics. It requires one to improve their physical and mental skills as well and doing so does involve some work. Dedication to the process pays off when a person is able to achieve that winning edge while still keeping it fun. Like anything else in life, you get out what you put into it.

This second edition continues beyond the first in that it provides the average golfer with more of an in-depth approach to game improvement. New chapters discuss game management, fine-tuning your swing, the mental aspects of the game, biomechanics and more. There is also a chapter outlining a roadmap (or steps) to follow for improving your game.

The additional material in this edition is going to help improve your game while making it more enjoyable. Golf is a game to be played with family and friends. So when you get a chance, take some time to introduce them to one of the Worlds greatest games – Ron Celano.

    1 Introduction

Look through any golf magazine that includes articles on golf instruction and you are likely to find a plethora of subjects such as - Keep Your Head Still or Start Back Slowly to Set Up for Speed and Power or Start the Downswing with Your Hips. Similar subjects such as - Start the Downswing with Your Hands and Start the Downswing with Your Arms often create confusion. Maybe we could think about all those ideas if we had unlimited time to complete each swing. That is, once we are able to sort out the conflicting instruction. Unfortunately, we only have a little over a second to complete our swing. There is little time to think about anything. In fact, there is scarcely enough time to think about merely one of the things that we have been working on or read about. Have you ever spent time working on one part of your swing that in your mind was going to turn your golf game around? Then after a few months of practice and several swing breakdowns, you realized that what you were working on was not the solution after all. We have all done it, and if you live in the upper Midwest like I do, half the season is gone by the time you recognize that your swing had not or is not going to improve.

By the way, watching golf instruction on TV doesn’t provide much help either. Interestingly, after watching TV, reading instructional articles and books, or by taking lessons, you probably picked up some bit of knowledge that with practice did yield some improvement in your ball striking. Unfortunately, for some reason that one bit of knowledge never seems to hold up
