ATHERTON
Microbat
Acentral highlands tour is an easy sightseeing journey taking in the central eighty-kilometre section of the Atherton Tablelands. It will reward you to stop the car and explore the largest town in the Atherton region. We went to Atherton especially to see The Crystal Cave, and the experience surpassed our expectations. The Crystal Cave is on the main street of Atherton.
While in Atherton, lovers of dairy and chocolate can try the taste delights and see how milk is processed at Gallo Dairyland. There is a hospital for bats that is open to the public at the Bat Hospital Visitor Centre. It is fascinating to see and learn about the flying foxes and microbats.

THE AMETHYST ROOM
Aslowly rotating turntable displays hundreds of smaller pieces.
The Amethyst Room is a large room within The Crystal Cave Gift Shop that is filled with incredible amethyst crystals from around the world. There are large, museum-quality specimens of amethyst geodes in the deepest purple hues and some with spectacular calcite crystals as well.
I caught my breath at the beauty of the deep-violet crystals. The colour, shapes and interaction of light with each crystal facet displayed nature at her most extravagant, flamboyant and beautiful.
I did a web search for more information about these beautiful crystals and found heaps of guff about the supposed spiritual power of the amethyst crystal. Personally, I simply appreciate the beauty of the crystals and attribute no more magic to them than to a blade of growing grass or other natural phenomena. In my opinion, all of nature is miraculous; no one thing is more special than anything else.
As a former potter who made glazes an art form, I know how to create crystals in controlled environments in a kiln, using specific minerals, heat, oxygen and cooling effects. There is nothing magic about it; it is simply science and art techniques. However, as an object of nature’s art, the amethyst is exquisite and awe inspiring.
