    Introduction

    While away at college, I learned about compartmentalization of decay in trees, a concept by plant pathologist Alex Shigo. When a tree is injured or faces infection, it defends itself by compartmentalizing. Whether decay has already begun, yet to start, or never to come, the tree only knows effort in pursuit of sustainability and salvation.

    Just like trees, we are faced with constant, unforeseeable stressors. Unlike trees, we have a form of protection very effective toward destruction: ourselves. But just as an axe needs sharpening to take down a tree, we must hone our minds to keep ourselves from being easily felled.
