    Always Incredible - Cin Medley

    Prologue

For years, I had been nothing but a walking time bomb. Max was right; wherever I went, trouble found me. The problem was that it always started in Chicago—the place I grew up, the place I’d lived my whole life.

I was raised by nannies and people who worked for my parents, in the socialite society of the wealthy, in one of the greatest cities in the world. But I have learned that no matter where you go or who you are, horrible things happen.

Living the life of privilege was not what people believe it to be. I was living proof of that. On a good day, I wondered if life was worth so much pain and suffering. I thought about all we had just experienced, and nothing in the handbook of life said we should have survived it.

Sometimes, you have to believe that the human spirit and the very will to survive are more potent than anything else. Oh, and let’s not forget love. Without love, I would not be here.

But always hiding in the dark shadows, the deepest recesses of my very being was the life that no one knew. My husband didn’t even know the real me.

Secrets are not always a good thing, especially when they are deadly.

    Chapter One

Sitting on the beach, Megan watched the only three people she would kill for, would die for. Nothing made sense. It had been two weeks, and the girls were still in shock. She couldn’t be out of Becca’s sight without her freaking out. Maggie just sat and watched with minimal interaction. Sean, who was the strength that held them together, somewhere along the way, he stopped. They had just been going through the motions of living without living. Occasionally, they would brush against one another and share a small smile. Only in bed, with the girls between them, did they touch, and that was only out of fear. Fear seemed to be the only emotion any of them knew.

As she sat in the sand, she couldn’t stop the flashes of memory, of Charlotte with her knife next to Becca’s head and then Sean going out the window, seeing him with a knife sticking through his body. Looking at him, he looked up and smiled at her. Maggie and Becca were just sitting on the sand, with no life in their eyes, less than two feet from her.

Time ticked by, and they lived their lives as if they were in a silent movie. Turning her head to look out at the ocean, it seemed to have no life to it either. The birds didn’t even make an effort to fly close to them. To her, it felt like they were living in some strange bubble of silence. She missed talking to her husband. She missed hearing the chatter of her daughters. They stayed close to one another, and Sean stayed close to all of them as if he knew something more was coming.

As Sean got up, he smiled at the girls, and they started their trek back to the house to eat dinner. It was all done in silence. For Megan, it was becoming unbearable. She wanted normal again, and deep inside, she knew nothing would ever be normal again. They stopped calling the hospital to check on Ian, and their phones sit turned off in a basket on the counter. They were completely isolated, yet none of them seemed to care. Except for the guards, Max’s guards that watched over them, they hadn’t seen another human being. Sean wouldn’t even leave them to do the shopping. He couldn’t bring himself to walk away from them, so he would send one of the men.

After they ate their tasteless food in silence, they sat on the porch, like every night since they’d got there. Waiting for the sun to set, and when it did, Sean got up to go into the house, and Megan followed like a robot. When they got into bed—Megan on one side, the girls between them, and Sean on the other—they slept only to wake and start the same day over again and again. But this night she couldn’t sleep; there was too much going on in her head that it wouldn’t shut off.

Megan waited until the girls were sleeping, and then she got up. She could feel Sean’s eyes on her, but he said nothing. She walked out the door, out onto the porch, and Sean still didn’t follow her. She needed him, but no one came. He just laid in the bed with the girls.

She moved down to the water’s edge, staring at the water, at the calmness of the nearly nonexistent waves. With the soothing gentleness of the water on her feet, she stopped, feeling something warm hit her hand. Looking down, the shimmer of the moon glistened on the tear on her hand. She hadn’t realized she was crying. They’d fought so hard to get to the place where they were. For less than twenty-four hours, they were happy. She finally knew what it felt like. She knew what it meant, but as with all things, it was gone. Everything was gone. Turning, she looked at the dark house looming in the darkness, with the moonlight glimmering off the roof.

They lived in just three rooms—the kitchen, the bedroom, and the living room, where no living had been done. The house was dead, and so were the people who lived in it. Her eyes drifted to the man moving along the side of the house, one of Max’s men. He watched her, making sure she was safe. She almost laughed out loud at the thought. There was nothing here that could hurt her. No one knew where they were. She turned and looked at the water again; her feet just started to move.

There was nothing left; all she felt was fear and pain. The girls would forget it all, but not if they didn’t let them. If Megan and Sean remained lifeless, then Becca and Maggie would remain lifeless. The water was up to her waist when she heard her name, but she kept moving. It felt good to finally feel something, something other than the pain, something other than the emptiness of a life she wasn’t living. As she pushed off the bottom, she heard her name again, but she didn’t stop. She wanted, no, needed the pain to stop, the fear to stop.

Megan heard her name again, but she didn’t care. She just kept swimming. She wanted the nothingness of what the water would provide. She felt something brush along her foot and closed her eyes. Maybe it’s a shark, and it’ll be over soon. The pain would end. She pushed forward until she felt something grab her leg, and then she heard him.

Megan, what are you doing? She fought to get away from him. She kicked and shoved him away. She just wanted it to be over. Please, baby, what are you doing?

Leave me alone. I can’t do this anymore. Please, I just want it to be over. She was crying, but he grabbed her around the waist and started to pull her back to shore. She fought the best she could to get away from him. Let me go! she yelled at him, hitting him over and over.

Never, I will never let you go, he said.

She was tired of fighting with people, tired of fighting this life. Sean stopped swimming and carried her out of the water. The minute he set her on the beach, she took off running. She didn’t want to see him. She didn’t want to see the dead in his eyes. He took off after her, grabbing her around the waist, and they tumbled to the sand.

Let me go. She was crying. Please, just let me go.

I can’t let you go, not now, not ever. Please, Megan, what is wrong?

I can’t do this anymore. I can’t fight anymore. I’m tired of being afraid. I just want it to be over.

No, baby, he said as he tried to hold her.

Stop it. She pushed at him. You don’t want me anymore. She was crying hard now, pushing at him with her feet, trying to get away from him.

    Why would you say that?

You don’t even look at me unless you’re watching me. You won’t touch me. We avoid each other.

Oh, baby. He grabbed her and pulled her to his chest. That is so not true. I love you so much it hurts.

No, I don’t feel it anymore, not since we left the hospital. I haven’t felt anything from you.

He held her tight while she cried. Shh, he kept saying. Oh, God, baby, you are so wrong. I’m so sorry if that’s how you feel.

Even the girls know there’s no love anymore. We are void of any feelings, and I can’t live like this anymore. They shouldn’t have to live like this. Without me, they can be happy. You can be happy. Trouble will leave your life.

Megan, no. Without you, I couldn’t breathe. It’s you that helps me get up each day. Knowing I’m going to share each day with you is what makes it all worth it for me. Without you, I have nothing. I am nothing.

She shook her head and pushed away from him. Loosening his grip on her, he let her move away. He sat in front of her and wrapped his legs around her. He reached up and took her face in his hands. You are the most incredible woman, the most wonderful wife, a remarkable mother, and the best friend I have ever known. How can you possibly think our lives would be better if you weren’t here?

We’ve been living in silence, Sean. You won’t talk to me, you won’t look at me, and you don’t touch me. We avoid any kind of contact. You haven’t kissed me since that day at the Drake. There is nothing.

He pulled her into his lap. I’m so sorry, baby. I thought that’s what you wanted. It’s been killing me not to touch you, not to hold you. I thought, with everything that happened and the way I made you leave Ian, that you didn’t want me anymore.

Why would you think that? Why would you think I would never want you to touch me?

I saw your face when that cop told us Ian got stabbed. I watched you freak out thinking he was going to die.

Is that why you were crying at the hospital, because you thought I wanted him?

He nodded. I know you still love him.

I’ll always love him. He gave us our daughters, but I am in love with you. Nothing is ever going to change that.

I’ve misread your feelings, and I’m so sorry about that.

And I’ve misread yours. I thought you didn’t want me anymore, that you reverted to being my security. Max was right about me. Trouble is all I am. It’s all I bring to the table of life. I’ve fucked up my life so badly that, no matter where I go or what I do, my past finds me and follows me. I bring nothing but fear and pain to this relationship, to our home, to our daughters.

No, baby, you are not responsible for the way other people think. Charlotte was not on you; she was unstable. Ashford was just fucking nuts. None of this is on you. I feel horrible that I’ve done such a piss poor job of protecting you. I’m the one who is not worthy of you.

She leaned into him and then heard the sweetest sound. Mama? Megan turned to see Max’s men holding Becca and Maggie. They reached for them and held them in their circle. Mama, no cry, Becca said. Then, looking at Sean, she said, Daddy, no cry.

It was time to heal. It was time to love again. They sat on the beach with the water splashing around them in the middle of the night, holding one another and healing.

They headed back inside the beach house. Everyone got cleaned up, and they all crawled back into bed, with a new outlook, a new sense of love and understanding. When the sun came up, there was a new sense of living that filled them a new sense of life, of their life. Although Sean knew differently, hence the guards that surrounded them, he was sure that Megan was unaware of the looming danger. He realized that he couldn’t protect them alone. Max was accommodating; he didn’t know everything, but he knew Sean and Megan, and he knew there was more at play here. For now, they were just going to live the best life they could live.

Megan opened her eyes to see the warmth of Sean smiling at her; it made her insides stir. She got up and went to the bathroom, and when she finished brushing her teeth, she opened the door, and Sean was there. Wrapping his hand around her neck, he kissed her, walking her to the wall. Don’t ever think that I don’t want you. Do you understand? His voice was deep. She nodded, and he kissed her again. Her body waking up, the fire in her ignited. He pressed his cock against her stomach. I want you so bad it hurts me, Megan. I love you so much. He kissed her again, his hand moving down her body, cupping her breast. He pinched her nipple, and she arched into him. He kept moving down, sliding his hand in the waist of her sweats. He smiled when he reached her core. His fingers found her wet and wanton. She moaned as he pushed his fingers inside of her, hooking them and hitting that beautiful place only he could find. She released all over his fingers, her body quivering. She was frantic, reaching for him. Wrapping her hand around his cock, she stroked him a bit harder than she would typically have, but he came like a freight train in the middle of the night, biting her neck to stop himself from screaming out. God, Megan, I’ve missed you.

Bringing her legs around his waist, he pressed into her, still hard for her, as she ground against him. Please, Sean, I need to feel you.

He grabbed hold of her and moved to the door, closing it, then he set her on the sink, pulling her sweats off then dropping his. Watch me. Slowly, he pushed inside of her. So beautiful, he moaned as he based himself then thrust a few times. Looking at her as she licked her lips, he covered her mouth on his pull back and pushed hard, moving her back on the counter. His hand pressed firmly on her ass, he pushed again, each time harder and faster. Keeping his mouth on her to muffle her cries, quieting the screams he loved to hear, he fucked her. It didn’t take long before he released as she pulsed around him. I love you, Megan Lane. Don’t you ever forget that. Not now, not ever.

She clawed at him, and he pulled her to his chest, wrapping her in his arms. I won’t. No matter what happens to us, Sean, don’t ever stop touching me. They held each other and cried a bit for what they thought they might have lost.

They cleaned up and got dressed, giggling at each other for how crazy they felt. It was wild sex, and it was fantastic. Megan walked out of the bathroom while Sean brushed his teeth. The girls were still sleeping, so they headed out to the kitchen. Sean grabbed her, sitting her on the counter, and devoured her mouth, touching her everywhere he could get his hands. He pulled back. You are the sexiest woman on this planet, and I am the luckiest son of a bitch to have you love me. Her heart was full again. She had her husband back, and they had some semblance of their life back.

The knock on the door broke their bubble. Shit, Sean said, causing Megan to giggle. You have to answer that. When he stepped back to lift her off the counter, he was hard and pushing against his sweats.

She couldn’t stop giggling. You better get that under control. The girls are going to be up in a few minutes.

He chuckled. You do this to me. Only you. He smacked her on the ass as she walked by, running her hand over the length of him.

Still giggling, she opened the door. Mrs. Lane, today is shopping day. I was wondering if there was anything that you needed besides the regular things?

Could you pick up a cake and a few bottles of wine?

Of course. Is there anything else?

Some vanilla ice cream. Thank you.

Not a problem. I’ll be back in about an hour. Jake is right outside if you need anything.

She smiled at him and shut the door, then she turned and looked at Sean in the kitchen, making breakfast. She ran in there and wrapped her arms around his waist, her hand grabbing his cock. How do you do this? I mean, two times in twenty minutes is unheard of, but three is not normal.

He laughed. You do this to me, and the thought of being inside of you does this to me. You are my everything, Megan. I could stay hard and come all day long. Don’t you get it?

I know how I feel. I want you all the time. No matter how much it hurts. So, it’s the same for you?

He turned around and put his hands on her face. All the fucking time. There isn’t a moment I don’t think about being inside you. There isn’t a moment I don’t want my face buried between those incredible legs of yours. There isn’t a moment I don’t want to do this. He kissed her.

She giggled. The eggs are burning.

Fuck. He turned around, and she went to check on the girls. They were still sleeping. When she got back to the kitchen, Sean had breakfast ready for them. They ate sitting on the kitchen floor. I missed this, he said.

    What, eating on the floor?

Yeah, remember when you first bought the house? We used to sit on the floor and eat and play with the girls?

    You know what I miss?

He chuckled as he got up and kissed her. In his very sexy voice, he said, I miss making love to my wife. You are incredible.

    Yes, that’s what I miss.

Maggie was awake and calling out to them. Mama, Daddy. Megan laughed at the way he ran through the tiny cottage to get to her before she fell off the bed. Megan knew they wouldn’t get off the bed, but she took off after him. They burst into the bedroom, jumping on the bed, sending her into a fit of giggles. Becca just sat there looking at them like they were nuts. Hello, my beautiful girls, he boomed, grabbing them up and snuggling them. Did you sleep well?

Maggie was giggling, but Becca was a bit leery of this newfound happiness. They had been withdrawn and sad for
