    Preface

    George Carlin

The perfect summary of what each of us can do to improve our life:

"The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Remember, to say, ‘I love you’ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away."

This is the base on which I build this book!

    A note from me

Usually a note is placed at the end of written books, chapters, etc. But I am writing this note to you, the reader, as a reminder, like some small sticky paper on a refrigerator.

This note is to give you some explanations about the road we are going to take together while you read this book.

This book, as all others. is a channel of communication between you , the reader, and me, the author, and I have a lot of attention that whatever I want to transmit to you will arrive in such a form as to be easily duplicated.

What is important for me is that the idea, the message, will come across, and I have much less importance and attention to the words I use.

This is the reason I try as much as possible to use everyday words that are frequently used and do not have double or triple meaning.

Words are an agreement in our society (in this case, English speaking), and each word transmits an idea, a meaning, or even a mental picture. When one string together these words there emerges a concept, and this is the reason for the existence of language.

If, while reading this book, you come across some idea you find incorrect or confusing, please do not hesitate in contacting me for clarification.

I wrote this book because I have an inner purpose to help others with the practical knowledge I gathered throughout my life, and I hope that this book will help you better your life.

As a businessman that had lots of experience in sales, I am very much aware that I need to deliver to you a book that contains much more value for you, much more than the money you spent to buy it, and the time you invested in reading it.

I do hope that, once you finish reading this book you will be happy for the value you got, and I would love to hear about your opinions, via a review or a direct communication

See you at the end of the book.

    Meet the serious person

This commandment, Thou shalt not be serious, is an unusual one, and it seems contradictory to what our parents and teachers told us all those years. Even our bosses or partners told us we should be serious.

Our spouses expect us to be serious, and when we teach our children, we repeat this mantra, Be serious, because we all believe being serious is a good trait that leads to a better life.

So, best we start with all the definitions of the word, as there are many, so we can establish the right definition we are going to use in this book

The word serious is an adjective, a modifier of a noun to denote a quality of the thing named or to indicate its quantity or extent.

: thoughtful or subdued in appearance or manner - a quiet, serious girl

a : requiring much thought or work - serious study

b : of or relating to a matter of importance - a serious play

a : not joking or trifling : being in earnest - a serious question

    b : archaic : PIOUS

    c : deeply interested : DEVOTED - a serious musician

a : not easily answered or solved - serious objections

b : having important or dangerous possible consequences - a serious injury

: excessive or impressive in quality, quantity, extent, or degree - serious stereo equipment - making serious money -serious drinking

    Synonyms

earnest, grave, humorless, no-nonsense, sedate, severe, sober, solemn, staid, uncomic, unsmiling, weighty

    Etymology

Middle English seryows, from Anglo-French or Late Latin; Anglo-French serious, from Late Latin seriosus, alteration of Latin serius weighty, serious; probably akin to Old English heavy, sad

What other people mean when they indicate to you to be serious is that you require much thought or work, and treat life with attitude of or relating to a matter of importance

But this is the one definition that is mostly used in day to
