Juanito and Daisy
A poor woodcutter lived with a woman and two children next to a fairly large forest. The baby was called Juanito and the girl Margarita. They had little to eat, and at a time when the kingdom was in famine, there came a time when humans could not even earn bread.
The Woodsman was in his bed one night, watching and letting Wink sleep without worrying about tossing and turning. Finally, he sighed and mentioned his wife:
What is going to happen to us?
We have nothing left, so how to feed a person who has little money, a small person?
Something is missing,
she replied. Tomorrow at dawn we will take the boys into the thickest part of the forest, build a fire for them, give them some bread and then leave them alone to visit our work, we chase them away because they don't know their way home.
By God, woman!
replied the man, I will not do it. How can you be overwhelmed by throwing your children into the forest! Soon they will be destroyed by wild beasts.
Don't be silly!
he yelled. So you want all four of us to starve? Now you can start sawing the coffin boards.
And he kept on chasing until the humans agreed.
But they give me a lot of sympathy,
he said.
The two younger brothers woke up hungry and listened to their stepmother's advice to their father.
Through bitter tears, Margarita commented to Juanito:
Now we are lost!
Don't cry, Margarita,
the boy consoled her.
