    Snake Trouble

    After retiring from Indian Railways and settling in Dehera, my grandfather made his days (and ours) more exciting by owning a rare pet. He paid a snake charmer his 20 rupees for a young python at the bazaar.

    Then, to please the curious with a group of boys and girls, he threw a python over his shoulder and took it home.

    I was so proud to be with him then and walk beside my grandfather. He was popular among Dehera, especially among the poor, who greeted him politely so that no one would notice the python. I was used to it.

    The first thing we saw upon our arrival was Tutu, a monkey hanging from a jackfruit tree branch. At the first sight of his kind's ancient enemy, the python, he shrieked in terror and ran home.

    Then Popeye, our parrot perched on the porch, let out the most terrible shrieks and whistles. His whistle was like the whistle of a steam engine. He learned to do this in the early days when we lived near the train station.

    The noise made the old woman go out onto the balcony and almost faint when she saw the python around the old man's neck.

    My grandmother put up with most pets, but not reptiles. Even though she's a sweet-tempered lizard, she's made her blood run cold. It was highly unlikely that she would let a python into her home.

    I'm going to strangle you! she cried.

    Nonsense, said my grandfather. He's just a young fellow. He'll get used to us quickly, I added as support.

    It may be so, said my grandmother. Aunt Ruby is coming to stay with us tomorrow. The moment she finds out that there is a snake in the house, she leaves.

    Grandfather, who found Aunt Ruby rather disgusted, said, Well, maybe you should show it first.
