DONNA MY REASON
This book that you hold in your hand is a tribute to one of creations finest masterpieces; my wife, my life, my Donna.
As the title states she is the reason that I have been able to be all the things that I used to only dream about. She is the reason that I now have 7 books published. She is the reason that I got the chance to live out my dream of being a state licensed contractor. She is the reason that I got to be a prom king at 46 years old. (She was elected Queen) She is the reason that I got to be blessed by being a husband. She is the reason that I have been able to hold on to my sobriety, through mental illness, for 25 years. She is the reason that I am living my dream as a drug and alcohol counselor in the beautifully pristine mountains near Lake Arrowhead, California. She is the reason that I will enter the Third Heaven. She is the reason that I have been able to walk into a Temple where only the proven righteous can go. She is the reason I still have all my hair. She is the reason that I love.
Donna has given birth to nine children, one at a time, and the two youngest stay the same age for four months each year. One, Evan, died in a swimming accident when he was five years old. Donna struggled for 10 years with an addiction that she overcame many years ago. She is one of the hardest working women I have ever met as you will be able to tell in some of the writings in this book. There is no way that I can picture her with a needle in her arm, but she did those things to herself.
These poems tell of our journey down many roads which have all led us to a closer relationship with each other. We are deeply committed to Jesus and have been members of several churches and are members now to a church that we believe in. Our path together has led us to where we are. If it had not been for this fantastic woman in my life I would never have known how to fully appreciate the simple pleasures that are by far the best. We sit at night by the fire and drink hot chocolate and cuddle even sixteen years later. We work at the same company where we minister together to Gods’ children that are recovering from addictions. The clients always state that we are an inspiration to them for the possibility that they too may be truly happy in a relationship one day.
Donnas’ full life story is coming out in another of my books very soon. That book is a novel about love and sobriety and how to live with both and not go insane. We have held on to our sanity for 16 years now as we raised up her 9 children. When I met her I was 45 years old and she was 33 and we made a deal to raise up the kids (two were still in diapers) and then we would go see the world. I started writing these love poems and it is now our hope that you will buy this book so we can finish living out the dream.
Relax and enjoy this tribute that I have put together for the love of my life. I think the most important thing about my wife and this book is that is shows that a woman who never finished the 10th grade and who has the fortitude to overcome a massive drug habit, can not only win at life, but can become immortal in verse. I love you Donna, I know that this year I didn’t have much to give you for your birthday, I am hoping that this book will make up for it. Happy Birthday my love.
9 KIDS
There’s the alarm
Crimany, how many people are in this bed?
Just the two babies and us
Lights been on all night
Try to put my shoes on
Ouch, match box car
Can’t see the other shoe
Babies look funny with them on
Try to brush my teeth
Oh Poo, Poligrip on my brush
They must not have known the difference
Need another new brush
And another hiding place
They seem to like my brush
All the kids are awake
No room for me at the table
There goes spilled milk
Down my socks
Mom somehow found time to make my lunch
She’s a miracle with all this
She has time for each
Big ones help drink the coffee
One dollar in my pocket
They needed the milk money
And snack money
Finally all in school
Bubble gum stuck to the truck door
Glad it’s not in the carpet
Time to leave
There’s a noise
The sprinkler is shot
It was tied to the bumper
All day long my mind is on
Her and the kids
There is reason and purpose
To struggle through work
Lunchtime finds a water gun stashed in the lunch pail
A phone call
One of the teenagers is struggling
With the car payment
This job won’t cover it
At the end of the work day
I stop for treats
When I get home
I’ll be the hero again
Pull up to the house
There are 8 bikes in the driveway
Didn’t know we were having a party
Inside one of the preteens is giving away the juices
OK as long as it’s not wasted
I am the almost hero
Not enough treats to go around
It’s OK
They can learn to share
At dinner not all are home
We’ll have to save some extra
They all eventually arrive
This time it’s spilled Kool-Aid
Got lucky, missed me
Homework is a hassle with 3 and 4 at a time
Teachers base their stuff on 2 kids per household
They have no idea what they’re asking of mom and pops
We get as much done as possible
And send notes begging for understanding
It’s TV time
I have been watching cartoons for so long
They are now my preference
After TV comes bed and the fighting to stay awake
And stay out after curfew
It is all resolved the same way every night
Then it just keeps on changing
The bed right now is just mom and I
We say our prayers of thanks for another day
Blessed with the abundance of Love
Sometimes it seems too much
And it would be for one alone
Thank you God for her
And my perspectives
I Love them all
And I know they know it
Because it returns
A DANCE
This little guy loves me
The earthly father he has known
Like Jesus to Joseph
Not in blood, but still my own
He explodes sometimes
Complete and total animation
He does it when happiness overwhelms
It is a complete Matthew celebration
He does it when he is sure I can see
But will not perform on demand
Pure freedom is this grateful seed
Excitement beams from his valiant stand
As dad I am filled with compassion
My limbs too old to try and imitate
The dance is for me to joyfully consume
It is pure glee, and never less than great
There in my thought just the other day
Was how I will act when I traverse my being
When I meet Jesus for the first time
What part will He first be seeing?
And I know what I am going to do
The very first thing I want Jesus to see
My entrance into His loving eyes and ears
His first heavenly impression of me
I want Him to know how it feels inside
So I am willingly going to take the chance
And with my brand new heavenly body
Do for Him the Matthew dance
A MOMENT
I saw it there, a meteor falling into want
A remedy available to the wet pillow
It was there in that moment
We had to gracefully go or grow
And I wanted no release
From the charm
I wanted never to cause
a tear or harm
I wanted only to be wanted more
I wanted only to see you soar
And now in this moment
And on this my impression
I know you cried tonight
God’s wisdom my session
It was there tonight
A flame flickering for lack of attention
It cannot be fed
It is not allowed nutrition
What you do for me
I am telling because Jesus knows
There has been no sin outside
Only our talent shows
For it is in the hallowed wings
I will not allow to be spent
For we have earned the freedom
to be our own frozen moment
Embrace us now as it begins
For Love is never wasted
And it is within the warmth of friends
Where Love is first tasted
A RED BIKE
What do you want for your birthday my child?
Oh Daddy, can I please have a bright new bike?
Yes my daughter you may have my mercy mild
As always you may have all of the gifts you like
Oh Daddy how will you pay for this gift of mine?
How can you expect me to wait for two weeks?
You know how expectations affect my mind
Suppose, just suppose your wallet springs leaks
Oh Daddy I know that you have always been true
And I know Daddy that I don’t want to wait
But
