Analyzing Labor Education in Ruth - Bible Sermons

    Introduction

The Book of Ruth tells the extraordinary story of God's faithfulness to Israel in the lives and works of three ordinary people : Naomi, Ruth and Boaz . In their work in the midst of economic hardship and prosperity, we clearly see God's hand in their work of agricultural production, in the generous stewardship of resources for the good of all, in the mutual respect among peers, in the creativity in the needs and nurturing of children, in the process of conception and growth. Throughout history, God's faithfulness to them has created productive work opportunities, and their devotion to God has brought blessings of provision and security to them and those around them.

The events in Ruth take place during the barley harvest festival (Ruth 1:22; 2:17, 23; 3:2, 15, 17), celebrating the connection between God's blessing and human work. The origin of this festival is found in two Torah passages:

Reap the first fruits of your labor, which you have sown in the field, and you shall keep this feast (Exodus 23:16; emphasis).

Then you shall keep the Feast of Weeks and offer your freewill offering to the LORD your God, for the LORD your God has blessed you. Rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your sons and your daughters, your menservants and your maidservants, and the Levites who dwell in your cities, as well as the stranger and the sojourner, the fatherless and the widow. The place where the LORD your God chooses to put his name. You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt; beware of these laws (Deuteronomy 16:10-12; emphasis added).

Together, these passages provide the theological foundation for the events of the book of Ruth.

    1. God's blessing is the source of human productivity ("as the Lord your God has blessed you").

    2. God bestows His blessing on productivity through human labor ("the fruit of labor").

    3. God requires opportunities for work and productivity for the poor and vulnerable ("strangers, orphans and widows) (You shall remember that you were slaves in Egypt" is an allusion to emancipation when His people were slaves in Egypt God , His provision for them in the wilderness and in the land of Canaan).
