Pilgrimages

The sun warms their hearts

then people long to go on

pilgrimages, exploring deep

into the mists of their

minds for that elusive

ray of joy that still

evades their conscious thought.

They listen to stories of distance

and starlight and yearn to find

their way to the promised

land of the kingdom

as they wander through

clouds of dust

isolate and afraid

They weep when they remember

their trusting youth and

vision of a future bright

with love and carefulness

now darkened into mists

of doubt and sorrow

with grief on every side.
